If anybody has any pics of this... (1 Viewer)

Thanks a lot you guys, I got an email into John trying to get the exact color combination and type of paint he used on the exterior and the wooden doors and banisters...I really don't want to repaint his stairwell and kill it's JJ authenticity...so I'm at a standstill right now...but it's cool...:D...today is a golf day...no working on dioramas...

I may play around with some texturing techniques when I get home......I should wait for John's guidance...but I'm sooooo impatient...

Nice looking project there Mike! I love that piece. Just a thought Mike, Why don,t you bring the piece to one of those paint stores that has the color match system. They should be able to match it for you spot on, but you might have to buy a whole pint or quart of the paint though but from the looks of things your going to need quite a bit anyway.

Also you might want to watch the movie also to get a few more ideas on the construction. This looks like its copied from the movie.
Check on you tube if you don,t have the movie, you just need to see that scene in the movie anyway.
Good luck!!!

Oh! here is a link to the final battle scene, but it looks a bit different then the piece your making, oh well! You still might get a few ideas anyway.

Thanks Mark...appreciate that...but it's just so simple...
measure, cut and glue...

Tim...that was a cool video clip...I have not seen that movie in a few years...in the movie's death scene...the stairway and structure is similar to the TMT piece...but a lot different too...

that's a great idea on matching the paint on the original piece...but with three colors mixed in the finished JJ piece, one as a base...one as a ink wash and one as a dry brush, I'm not sure what Wal Mart could do on replicating it...there is no single swatch big enough to copy...everything is mixed on top of each other in a weathering effect...

JJ sent me the 2 paint colors, the ink wash and his texturing technique, believe it or not, he brushed paint on over layers of torn paper, building up a base like papier mache with small pieces of irregular paper, which breaks up the flat even surface...

the small Vallejo tubes are about $2.50 apiece...

the base color...I think I'll get two or three...

the ink wash and the dry brush...I think I'll get one of each...

I don't mind waiting a few days for the paint delivery...I'll order it Monday...

in the meantime...I might work on the wood...

I sent him another email of that question...

I'm gonna caulk and sand all the seams with the Durham's Water Putty so I have have a smooth seamless structure ready when I get the paint...

Look good Mike!

Did you see the article in TSC issue 36 on how TM build and painted this structure?

Donnie

no Donnie...please send a link if you can find one...I would really like to see it...

Donnie...thanks for copying and sending me that article...I got the 2 Vallejo paint matches from JJ today and ordered a bottle of each...they also had the exact same ink wash that JJ used...I think I will texture it today (if football doesn't interfere, lol) and am anxious to get the paints and try to match his stairwell...

I thought the Vallejo paints were very expensive...but only $2.70 a bottle...

Mike, really impressed with your buildings. You may have stated this in prior posts, so apologise (sp) if you need to repeat it, but what do you use to cut the form...especially the curves of the doorways and upper archway??

Thanks Walt...

it's easy work...

I used an Exacto knife with a new sharp blade...

after I traced the outline off of John's half archway onto the foam...

I then turned the archway over and traced the other side of the archway to the foam...

so they would be perfect matches to Johns...

I didn't detail any of the work on this...I threw it together so fast I was done before I noticed...

I had some exciting break through developments today...at least for me......I'm excited...so I thought I would share them with you...

Thanks to Dave from TMTerrain...I used a product that he recommended to me to texture my structure...

first off...let me say that Dave is being a Prince by eagerly offering consulting advice and help in doing this project...he is being so helpful and giving of his time and techniques...

Dave suggested I use Polyfilla to texture the building...as that is what he used...unfortunately...it's only available in the UK...

the problem is finding a product that will adhere to the foam securely, will allow a textured look to match JJ's stairwell and will not chip off...

so Dave suggested I try a spackle...which he thinks is the equivalent of a US product to the UK Polyfilla...

I bought a small tub of Dap Dry Dex Spackling ($5.00)...and did a small area today...it dried quickly and seems to adhere well...but what really impressed me is the ability to texture it with a trowel...I think I can get very close to the texture of the JJ's stairwell...

The Dap spackle product is pink...as it dries...it turns white as an indicator when it is fully hardened...I will post some pics when my section dries...I would make a small suggestion that anyone that wants to use it...should make their structure out of blue board instead of pink board as I did...so you can the the pink spackle easier on the blue instead of the pink...

one last thing...Dave at TMTerrain...actually makes these railings and sells them prepainted...

JJ's stairwell railing are very thin and delicate...I work with wood a lot and think I'm pretty good with it...I am not anxious to try and replicate John's small railings...look at the last pictures of the railing...they are about 1/3 the thickness of the figures leg...very small...I will probably buy them from Dave...

I may give the overall piece a very light sanding when I'm finished to remove some of the spots that I over textured...it's real important to me to match John's stairwell pretty close before painting...

Looking good Michael, surprised you cannot get polyfilla in the US. It is available here in Canada, I have a big tub of it sitting in my basement. Looks like you have found a product that works just as well though.

Have you tried Michaels to see if they have some wood in the same size as what you need? I am sure the would have. I picked up a bag of matchsticks that were quite small.

Scott...no...I have not...I will give it a look see before I buy the railings from Dave...I have an email into him asking if his are wood or resin...I would prefer resin...but if I have to make my own...i'm not looking forward to it...they are really delicate...I like to work with wood...but this looks like a booger...

here is a picture of the first area I covered in spackle...it may need a light sanding...but it has plenty of texture in it...

I'm confident it will adhere strongly to the foam and I'm confident I can match JJ's texture pretty close...

Really looking good Mike.Does anybody in the U.S. sell The Toy Soldier Collector?
Mark

Wow...I'm not sure if I am...it's $42 for 6 issue and then $20 for shipping...you need to find us a US distributor...that hopefully will be cheaper...but I couldn't imagine how...the shipping is too strong for me...

I don't want to order from overseas just for a magazine.
Mark

Mike, it,s coming along nice! Did you get a 1/30th scale trawl to plasterer the building for a more realistic look???:p
