Hello all,

Just wanted to introduce myself and Traverse Dioramics. We're a new supplier of scale terrain and scenery products – a limited range at the moment, but growing. You can find (and order!) our Mountain Pass terrain set here at Treefrog, or see more angles on our website: www.traversedioramics.com. FYI, 1:32 scale is our sweet-spot, but a lot of natural features will be multiscale. We launched in the last few months and are thrilled to be open for business and serving your scenery needs.

I also do custom display projects (commission work), using a dense, resilient foam that I'm excited to introduce to you all; to my knowledge, it's a new material to the hobby. It flexes instead of snaps, and springs back to shape instead of crushing, making it considerably more durable than insulation board (the pink or blue stuff). Armed with a few tricks, you can shape, detail, and paint the material quite nicely. It makes a killer rock texture. In fact, it's the same material I used to do the master sculpt for the mountain pass. I've even crash-tested it with my sons and nephews (six boys from 2 yrs. old to 8). For what it's worth, it's also waterproof, making a great floating island. I'll be posting some "How-To's" in the coming months as time allows.

A word about me: I live in the Chicago area with my wife and 2 boys. I've been a collector myself for several years now, turned onto the hobby through my sons and a general interest in history – plastics, mostly, but I can feel my resistance to metal beginning to weaken. Tell me now, is this how it starts? Is plastic just a gateway drug to a hardcore metal addiction? Better hide the credit cards, dear. At any rate, I'm very glad to be part of the forum and look forward to interacting with you all. Let me know if you have any questions, or requests for scenic pieces. Can't promise we'll fulfill your request, but with enough interest, there's a decent chance.

Cheers,
Dave Bonick

Welcome aboard Dave. Looking forward to seeing your new products as they become available and also your How To's. I mentioned to George that you should make a replica of Isandlwana hill :)

Welcome indeed Dave. Your products look very interesting and I also look forward to seeing more. I am especially interested in your upcoming trees and hedges and wonder if you are going to do some country stone walls.

welcome to the biz.
i wish you luck and hope you become a household name with collectors.

Britfarmer, thanks for the suggestion. That would be fun to recreate. I've seen photos of the hill and surroundings where everything's very green, and others where the grass is brown and dry. Any idea whether it was the dry or rainy season at the time of the actual battle? Also, am I to understand there was a creek/river bed crossing the battlefield (a branch of the Buffalo River?). I've seen maps, but didn't know if the bed was dry or full. Just trying to get a lay of the land.

And by the way, who else out there would be interested in an Isandlwana terrain set?

Thanks,
Dave

Spitfrnd,
Thanks for your kind words. I was shying away from stone walls since there seems to be so many choices out there. Is there a variation you're looking for that is less common? Is it a quality issue with the current choices, or just that they're mostly cultivated rather than country stone walls?

Best,
Dave

Hi Dave,

Thanks for posting here in the forum. I must say you do very nice work, and your initial releases is definitely a big hit! I picked up a primed plus version at the Westcoaster, from some of the very best people in the toy soldier business, btw, Nick & Deanna from Toy Soldiers of San Diego:). They had several of your painted and primed + versions at the show and sold them all. I look forward to your forthcoming releases and hope you can perhaps tip us off here on anything upcoming. Thanks again for such an impressive initial release! Here's how I set up mine(embellished w/ a tiny bit of greenery):

joesgis,

Love the setup! The touch of greenery works nice, too. And thanks for your support...I couldn't agree more about Nick and DeAnna.

As far as giving you all a heads up on new releases, that's certainly my plan. If fact, here's one project on the table you might be interested in: a water add-on to the mountain pass, which, in the Thermopylae scene, would be the waters of the Gulf of Malis. I can do a custom add-on right now, and am exploring it as a factory-produced option as well.

Best,
Dave

Welcome! I picked up the prime-plus at the westcoaster, looks great. As a train buff, you might also want to market to O and G-scale guys.

Hi Dave,

Thank you for the compliments, but its your creation that really makes that set up pop! I'm most certainly interested in seeing your water add on for the mountain pass set! I hope you decide to manufacture it as a production piece. But if not, I'm certainly interested in pursuing the custom add-on route. I'd really like to see what would indeed become the Gulf of Malis (great idea:) in my set up. Thanks for the response, and I know many of us will be watching this thread closely for any announcements and/or previews.

All the best,

Joe

Joe,

Thanks again for sharing your photos. It's actually the first time I've had a chance to see the pass with a full Thermopylae engagement, so that was a treat.

As far as the water add-on, are you planning for a shelf-top display or a table-top? That, obviously, will have a bearing on how wide I can go on the water piece (assuming most shelves are only 12 in. deep, tops).

Regards,
Dave

Hi Dave,

Thank you for the reply. I think a table top set up would be ideal for my set up. Will you be offering the add on in both prime plus and fully painted options, or are you only doing this as a custom add on at this time? Thanks again for developing and producing such a fine product right out of the gates!

Joe

Joe,

At the moment, it would be a custom piece, fully painted, but would work well with either version of the Mountain Pass. My project queue is starting to fill up fast, so realistically, a mass-produced water add-on is probably a ways off. In the meantime, I'd be happy to scope out the custom route to see if that makes sense for you. Feel free to shoot me an email anytime; you can go to my website, check out some of the water features there for an idea of my approach, and then use the contact form.

Dave

Mark,

"Primed Plus" is just the title I settled on to describe a version of our Mountain Pass which has some highlights/lowlights on it, but is not fully detailed. So it is more than primed (and can be displayed right out of the box), but less than fully painted. And, of course, it is less expensive than the fully painted.

Dave

Hi Mark,
Treefrog carries both the painted and the 'primed plus' and comparing side by side it seems less that one is painted with less detail but that the painted one has vegetation and some extra touches added to it. Don't let the 'primed plus' title fool you into thinking you have to finish the painting yourself. It is out of the box ready for your display. I would consider them more as 'regular' and 'deluxe.'
Regards,
