Is it just a "lame excuse"? (1 Viewer)

Excellent Konrad, Looks like you guys had some fun..... I remember the Christmas I got an HO Aurora Race Car set....a very cool gift...I think my father liked it as much as I did...he set it up on a 8x8 board that Christmas....We had it in the basement for quite a few years.....Also bought accessories like the speed bump, the criss-cross, the squeeze section and different cars. Good stuff.

Thanks, Frank :salute::
It looks like there are a lot of similarities between my current and your past experience ^&grin
I like it at least as much as the little guy, and have serious plans to make it an expanded and permanent layout, that him and me can share for a few years to come.
Criss-cross, squeeze section, and more, all included in the plans ^&grin :wink2:
Cheers!

Talking about optimizing the use of available space, guys :smile2:
Got me a couple more things to extend the initial race track a bit, and I set it up in my room.

After considering a number of setups this morning, I ended up with the one you see below.
Usage of space was achieved to the very last possible inch.
I'm not kidding. When I open the door, in which I am when shooting the first pic, there is literally 1" clearance to the first curve just left of the start/finish line.
Walls, cabinet, bookcase and desk with chair set the limits on all other sides.

Those troops in my cabinets probably think, what the hell is going on in here ^&grin

Oh well, it's great fun, and I am most curious what my grandson will say when he comes over tomorrow.

Am getting back to Toy Soldiers soon, guys :smile2:
Haven't forgotten them all {eek3} ^&grin :wink2:

Cheers and Happy Collecting!

Konrad

Your Grandson is going to love it! Your dedication to his happiness warms my heart and it serves as a reminder that this forum is full of great people.

Well, this thread was started by me last January, to get opinions if it was just a "lame excuse" to get a Slot Car Race Track for my 5 year old grandson.
Throughout the year, him and me very frequently played with it. It got extended, a lot more track pieces, more cars, and the location changed for several times within the house.
Top was one weekend, Saturday and Sunday, where him and me were alone, nobody else around who could get in the way :wink2: or be bothered :smile2:
We set up a "big one" using the living room. Pushed some furniture to the side and out of the way and went at it ^&grin

Then it all gets taken down again and packaged away, until the next race. To my surprise it is him who actually comes back after a few weeks time, and says: "Opa, wanna race some cars again?" Very, very hard to say No to such a question and I don't think I ever did ^&grin Every time we found some space, large or small, and a race track was build.

We have 6 cars that we are using for racing, and they are pretty beaten. Very hard for the little guy to maintain a safe speed, so they don't fly all over the floor, but still come out winning. So yes, those cars are well used and you can tell ^&grin

Beside those, him and me started a collection. He often comes around and says "Hey Opa, wanna look at some cars?". He then sits on my lap in front of the computer and we go through a number of websites who have pictures of wonderful slot cars. Well, and they also sell them ^&grin

So, by now there's a second part of the slot car hobby, and that is collecting cars.
When a car comes in for "the collection", Aidan says "We put this one on the shelf, so we can see it all the time, like you do with your Toy Soldiers, but first we have to try it, to see if it works?" Then we put it on the track and he really drives it very calm and careful. After a couple rounds he says "Yes, it works, now let's get our practice cars so we can drive fast" ^&grin

The collection car goes on the shelf and the practice cars get to work :wink2:

So, all in all, the "lame excuse" from last Christmas made out very well, and it was and is a pleasure through the entire year.

The biggest surprise though for me, is that he very seriously makes the difference between "practice cars" and "collection cars". He wants to see all cars running every now and then, but he is very, very careful with the trigger on his controler when a "collection car" is on the track.

Here are some pics of favorites that have been accumulated in the last 7 months for the "collection" :smile2:

Happy Collecting!
