"Is This Good Ground, General?" (2 Viewers)

With all the fine detail, this scene comes alive. I love the rug, dishes, binocs, dog, just all of it. The pictures on the wall are great, as well. A superbly presented scene of a command conference. -- Al

Thanks for your comments guys....always appreciated. I had an awful lot of fun putting this one together even though getting the light and shadow balanced was a bit of a headache

When I first saw the pre-release pictures of the WB Meade Command set with it's drop-leaf dining table, parlour chair, woven log basket- instead of the usual campaign furniture associated with such a set- it immediately lent itself in my mind to an interior dio of the Widow Leister's house rather than an external set-up. This very simple two roomed abode became the nerve centre of the Army of the Potomac for two whole July days under the command of that cold, serious soldier George Meade. However, he showed unusual consideration for Lydia Leister's belongings by having his staff move most of it into a near-by barn for safety. No doubt he thought his staff might damage the owner's possessions as well as making room for all the military trunks and other such paraphernalia that accompanies a General Commander in the field. But in fact it was the Reb bombardment on the third day that might well have destroyed it. That little house- adjacent to the Taneytown Road- was riddled with shot that demolished the chimney and blew out the windows and door but the widow's furniture remained unscathed in that barn thanks to Meade.

Absolutely incredible!

Also, I know some accounts suggests that Gen. Meade was pretty anxious during these councils of war, but I see here that he is truly beside himself! :wink2:

^&grin^&grin^&grin

Well spotted BJ but remember one of Meade's staff officers ensconced in the house was his son Captain George Meade Jr. So I used a little artistic licence based on the premise "Like Father, Like Son" ^&grin. However having two different figures of Meade allows one the versatility of having him either seated or standing over two separate scenes. I like that fact very much and only wished we had some other seated celebrity ACW figures.

Mixing the pot further I also used two Sam Grant's who at the time would have been a few hundred miles away blowing Vicksburg to pieces. I used this figure for Meade's Chief of Artillery BG Henry Hunt who apparently spent a considerable amount of time pouring over the tracings of the Union line to ascertain where to place his guns for the second day's fight. The WB figure of Grant I used as MG Slocum XII Corps Commander for the first picture. This doubling up only illustrates that we simply haven't got enough Union or Reb celebrity standing/sitting figures (and without carrying those darn ubiquitous field glasses too) to knock up an accurate ACW Council of War such as those that took place at Gettysburg which is more the pity-But one lives in constant hope ^&grin.

And of course there is also a definite requirement for various junior staff officer figures especially one to take the dog for a walk ^&grin

Thanks again guys

Bob

Awesome display! I like how you can even see out the window and catch a glimpse of the flag. Well done.

Hi MC45

You asked me the very same question back in August of last year on the K&C Board. Here's the link to that question and the replies. My answer is still extant as the accessories used then are identical to those used in these WB shots.
