Very funny my friend!:salute:: Merely an observer these days.

Hope all is tickety boo with you

Not surprising a mod decides what I write is allegedly vilifying a poster. last time I looked vilifying meant something different than stating if you are offended by little bits of metal get another hobby. Lets forget that the millions of women and children raped multiple times ''got what they deserved'' Forget that terms ''creepy'' etc are applied with brush strokes to those who choose to collect German figures and then exhibit and display as they see fit for fun on a toy soldier forum.

As you said we all have opinions and I stated mine.
Mitch
'Allegedly'?...... like those 'Alleged' Nazi war crimes?
Wayne.

How about a US Marine bound and kneeling next to his bound and decapitated mate, while a Jap Officer stands over him with a raised and bloodied Samurai sword? Or, even better, a Dutch nurse minus her uniform being bayoneted by two honourable sons of Nippon after they just raped her? Maybe not everyone's cup of tea... but?

As a long time toy soldier collector and avid history reader I have the following comments......
Over 50 years of collecting and displaying "military miniatures" I have received mostly positive comments.
On occassion, however, people would ask me if I am "a war monger", "glorifying war", "descensitising children to war and violence" or "glamorizing brutal men" (e.g. Hitler, Stalin, Napoleon, Caesar, Alexander, etc.).

I know from my own children that history today is often a neglected subject or at best pushed to the realm of dates, names and memorized headlines.
If my collecting and sharing can stimulate more people, especially young people, to appreciate history then I have created a positive experience.
We are all offended by the atrocities of war and crime. Teaching about their causes and consequences is key to creating a more decent society.
I have used my toy soldiers to spark interest in young students at schools, libraries and museums. It gets their attention and then I, along with a teacher or historian try to make that history interesting, relevant and even exciting!

Toy soldiers were a catalyst to my quest for more historical information. Innitially I wanted to recreate a battle or parade, later I became interested in the culture and politics of that period.
We all collect for different reasons, some as simple as reliving childhood memories and others to recreate a specific historical event.
Certainly a toy soldier cannot convey the true emotion or image of war but it can be a starting point to a journey of research and understanding that can make an impact on someone's understanding and attitude.
So I say to those who are offended by certain figures or dioramas, try to turn them into positives by teaching about what they stand for. Its fine to express your opinion but be careful about condeming. Nazis on parade is not my cup of tea but I can see
teaching about the reasons for that movement and how we must be careful not to be mesmerized by spectacles and propaganda.

As a final note I do draw the line on certain subjects and will choose not to collect some personalities or series. For every war and conflict there will be innocent people who were drawn in and harmed.

i do agree,
Collecting nazis on parade... Seriously, what for ?
i mean all the uniforms are the same, poses of figures are identical, and flag painting is a very basic cross on uniform background.. So i still don't get why people who collect that kind of figures..
but hey, everyone can do what they want, but dont ask me to understand or be friend with them ,

alex

As one who has been involved in these discussions before, I no longer bother to get involved with them. Although I don't care for LAH figures for what they represent and I would never buy them, people buy for different reasons. I'm sure there are some who find them "cool," some who find that period of history interesting and some who may be sympathetic to the Nazis.

Whatever the reason, we all have different collecting interests and I find that in these kinds of discussions nothing is really achieved and certainly no minds changed.

Ironically, these conversations usually revolve around LAH, not the figures shown in the diorama by Shadowfax, which I thought was well done and not at all offensive.

Live and and let live.

I agree. And I also wouldn't like to have little nazi in a marching parade in my home....{sm4}

If you feel so strongly against Toy soldier companies selling NAZI propaganda boycott every one involved in the industry until they stop.

Gents,

I read all of the posts...then re-read them again. I must say that there are some really intelligent, well-rounded and classy fellas on this forum AND thats why I joined this forum in the first place. Look, I don't have Facebook, myspace, twitter, instagram and all that chit man. I got an i phone that only use to dial out, take pics and text the old lady. I got a slick *** Apple Mac Air, a gmail account, ebay account and I belong to ONE forum that I allow myself to talk to "strangers".

Brothers, this is what I am getting at; I really dig this forum for its toy soldier information. Man, you can find out anything here! Got a question about a mystery piece...go to TreeFrog...wondering if you can find a piece...go to TreeFrog...need to buy, sell or trade...go to Treefrog...wondering about the upcoming show...go to TreeFrog!!! So, yes we as Americanos have the LUXURY of buying what we want, selling what we want, building a little scene if we want, thinking what we want, expressing our opinions, thoughts, ideals, eating, drinking, smoking, scratching and basically doing what ever the hell we want in this Country...because we live in BEST COUNTRY ON THE FACE OF THE EARTH! And if your from Texas...well you live in the best STATE in the World.

But, before my overseas brothers and sisters get ready to blow me up over American arrogance, I must disclaim that I have had the privilege to travel this big wide world and know that there are deep and ugly scars all over this world...including the USA. No country (except maybe Bhutan) has been immune to the horrors of war and atrocity. Allow me to digress a little in history (and don't get all offended if I left anyone out):

-The Cavemen..yes the Caveman whacked each other out over food and women. See any Cro-magnamans walking around? Okay, once in a while at Wal-mart, but that might be the "missing link".

-Adam and Eve-ate the fruit, the devil told them they were "naked" and God was pissed. So, what did they do? Begat, begat and begat.

-Cain and Able. Cain whacked out is his own bro...coldblooded man...coldblooded.

-Moses was a slave for life until he busted out the tablets. While he and the big man were working out the details of the commandments, all hell broke loose while he was gone. More debauchery, drink and sin. The big man was double pissed and he whacked them all out.

-The Greeks...watch 300 again and you will get the picture.

-The Romans. 1200 years of war, rape and pillage...period.

-The Dark Ages. Another 1000 years of war, rape and pillage.

-The Medium Dark Ages. More war, rape and pillage.

-The Light Ages. Mas war, rape and pillage.

-Columbus and The New World. Are you kidding me... an entire continent of peoples was wiped out out of greed. Oh and war, rape and pillage.

-Slavery...good lord this world was built on the backs of slaves.

-The USA...puh lease! Slavery almost became the norm. The Indians needed to be "relocated" and more war, rape and pillage.

-The Japanese ideal of superiority led to more...war, rape and pillage.

-The Nazi's...forgeetaboudit.

-Stalin...a cult of personality that historians still can't figure out to this day. When he gave a speech nobody wanted to be the first to stop clapping.

Mao, Stalin, Hitler, Mussolini, Hirohito, FDR, Truman, Patton, Churchill and many other world leaders have blood on their hands. ALL OF THEM and the people they led. In fact, I don't think you can name any world historical leader that does not have blood on his hands. Why?

Because...

...Man either builds or destroys.

So, lets not destroythis forum with equating the fun of collecting toy soldiers to that of a direct attack on you and yours. Lets not get into the murky waters of passing judgment on anyone who collects, builds, buys, sells, covets, hates, this line or that line. Now, if a dude on this site says "hey look at my dio and all the red injuns that I am depicting kilt" then that is in bad taste. Or, "check out My Lai re-enacement of US Soldiers killing those gooks" then I would personally contact Treefrog and say ***?

In other words, what I am saying is lets all get along here and build a better forum. Do unto others and you would do unto yourself. Keep your sneezes to yourself and cover your mouth. Speak as if the microphone is always on. More than just collectors read this site because IT IS PUBLIC and don't forget that. Nobody here is out to "get you" and remember that this site is a privilege for us to use as a resource in this fun hobby. People start acting silly here and Treefrog will shut it or shut you down...mostly likely you. It costs money to run a website this big and you ain't paying the bill, so show a little respect. I don't know the Treefrog folks, but I am sure they are wonderful. So, again think before you type.

Lastly, I am not singling anyone out here, just speaking in general terms and if you don't like it...well then stop reading.

Later,

John

By extension, I assume you're saying that since King & Country makes the Ancient Egypt range, you're not buying K & C until they stop making it? Oh, well, I guess they'll survive. There goes the gray paint, just tossed out!

I believe Rupert Murdoch lost over $500 million dollars buying, and subsequently selling 'My Space'; I hope he is not a forum member as being reminded of this may well wreck his weekend!

If you feel so strongly against Toy soldier companies selling NAZI propaganda boycott every one involved in the industry until they stop.

A word about slavery in Egypt
There were no slave in Egypt before the Ptolemaic period ( when Greeks invaded Egypt )
There was nowadays a kind of servitude when the Nile was high, because at this period of time agricultural work was not possible , they were used to drag irrigation chanels and build official buildings, road ... it was a taxation in labours instead of money ( chore )
There was also penalties by the way of forced labors for criminals and the penalties could be extended to the next generation
( like the guys clothed in orange in US, except it's not extended to the next generation )
So feel free to collect anything Egyptian before Greeks invasions ( Alexander the Great ) and ... don't :) collect Greeks

The epitome of the Third Reich on the battlefield was the Waffen SS. The units Leibstandarte Adolf Hitler, Das Reich were developed from high ideological ideals especially the LAH. They stood for everything the regime held and the LAH proudly wore their Fuhrers name on their cuff title.

The third SS unit the Totenkopf derived from Teddy Eicke's early concentration camps. I won't name other divisions but, the SS police divisions were only surpassed in brutality by the Heer units and police divisions attached to the Einsatzgruppen etc.

These Waffen SS units are all featured heavily in the releases and are bought feverishly by collectors who want them in their collection. In fact some collectors are the same collectors who easily denounce other collectors for having parade figures of the LAH pre war.

So, how morally can the parade figures upset collectors and glorify the third Reich when having the armed units with the ideology etc behind them even more able to be exemplified on the battle field be acceptable?? In reality the Waffen SS with their ideology and fighting élan ensured millions more died because of the fight they put up. They were not Hitler's Fire Brigades for nothing. How many fewer would have died in the Holocaust but, for these fanatical national socialists??

I hear I won't glorify the swastika yet, its accepted on AFV's did the meaning behind the blood oath flags change from pre war into battle??

Surely, I have Waffen SS in my collection so, the brave heroic allies can beat them?? Just ain't gonna hunt as they say. Surely, if you despise the regime how can you have anything Waffen SS (remember the epitome of the third Reich) in your cosy home?? I have heard that and never see the stuff set up like that just neat rows of German armour outweighing all the brave allied stuff on shelves.

Surely, thinking only the Waffen SS actually committed ''crimes'' and not the Heer is an outdated view and not accepted by anyone today. so, if these figures cause offence then surely the moral code that drives these outbursts we hear from time to time should, actually abhor all the German armed forces. Without the Heer not as many people would have been executed by the very small Einsatzgruppen groups. so, in terms of morally wrong the entire German army was liable. How does that affect having the 3rd Panzer Division, 21st panzer division etc sitting on your shelf.

Manufacturers and dealers who allow the constant jibes at collectors who collect what they wish should remember that when they are saying it upsets someone and defending their right to abuse sections of collectors who do buy them have their kids schooling, cars, homes and food all funded to a big extent from the thousands of people who buy German related or, ''nazi'' memorabilia.

For me the double standards shown and handily put to one side when a nice Wittmann Tiger (a man who absolutely adhered to the Nazi principles and doctrine and adored the Fuhrer) or some other neat little 222 armoured car with the deaths head of 3rd SS (the division that murdered all over Europe) or the Kursk Tiger 2nd SS DR (responsible for Tulle hangings and the Oradour actions) is remarkable. From some not all by the way.

It would be at least decent to hear one of these posters who actually ''hates'' the Third Reich say, I won't buy any German WWII because of the atrocities rather than I buy this cause it looks good or, some SS stuff is Ok and I like the unit markings etc etc.

If you hate something so much (that little metal toys can upset you sufficiently to comment and call) would you not steer away from it altogether than just have half a hate?? The I hate what they stood for in a parade uniform but, I don't mind when they are in combat is astonishing to me.

The only time I will say this ''buy what you want don't buy what you don't like'' but, please save the moral preaching against those who have a different viewpoint about WWII especially when your shelves are bursting with SS armour.

Mitch,

I think you raise some very good points. I think many who collect German figures and tanks don't think about the units that the tanks represent -- they just like the look -- whereas the look of the SA or SS is more visceral in that it's right in front of you; you can see immediately that they're brown shirts or black shirts. We also know that non-collectors when looking at our collections may find tanks cool to look at but we also know that looking at goose stepping soldiers with swastikas may have the opposite reaction.

When K & C issued WS 79 and 80, which were great looking tanks, but represented the Totenkopf, I drew the line there. However, I'm sure others were not similarly bothered although I'm there were some who were.

It's obviously up to each collector to determine what they like and what they don't. Collecting is an emotional pursuit -- you buy what you like and what appeals to you -- so there is not necessarily any logic in our decisions.

Captain Jack,

The Australians don't get a pass!!! Bunch a' ex-convicts who shoot Kangaroos and (So I heard) apparently are Foster drinking, wife beating cowboy wanna be's. Oh and by the way, the Outback Steakhouse here is States sucks!!! You call that a Steak? Brother, give me a reason to like the land down under the worlds huevos.

HOWEVER COMMA, Angus Houston is doing a hell of a job looking for the missing plane. The Australian Womens Olympic Beach Volleyballers are freaking hot!!! The Road Warrior is one of my favorite movies and Men at Work are 80's musical legends. Other than I can't wait to visit Australia one and fly on the famous Quantas lines. Will you host this hell raising Texan and take me out on the town?

Let me know,

John from Texas

We can all compartmentalise as we need to. Many put an SS tank and a few infantry on the shelf and see nothing more than a stiff fight about to take place. In this guise they symbolise the elite of the German army more than anything else. I'm not thinking of Hitler when I look at these. Parade figures with the flags and jackboots, even without the regime taking the salute, are different to me. They go too close to celebration, even adoration. I have no problem with anyone who buys them but it's not a range I'd ever feel comfortable owning.

As for the comparisons of the Germans to Russians and Romans, I don't see the issue. Even when I think of epic killers like Tamerlane I see no resemblance. On the question of the worst ever, there is only one name on top of the list - Hitler, by a mile.
