So, we now have a pinhead of a State Delegate that is demanding the State song be changed from Maryland My Maryland because its lyrics have Southern Sympathies? Seriously? I hope our Governor sticks to his guns last week when he said it is beginning to become PC run amok. There are actually people in Maryland who want all of Antietam removed because it was a Southern Victory, they want Confederate dead removed from the cemetary and now they want the State Song changed.

Where are the Secession papers, I would like to sign up, enough is enough. As I have stated elsewhere and before, we should rename our country to the United States of MORONS as I am pretty sure the Morons outnumber the intelligence at this point.

It's not so much that people are afraid to offend anyone, though folks are intimidated. It's the militancy of people who feel offended by this or that, and take steps to bully others to give in to them. Add to that the ignorance of many who are easily offended. Take, for example, the pinhead who called 911 in New Hampshire to complain that a vendor at a flea market was selling Nazi and Confederate items. What did that moron believe, that it's illegal to sell or possess such items? This is the real problem, a combination of hypersensitivity to any topic, coupled with out-and-out ignorance.

I just read this one, unbelievable. You have to wonder at the intelligence in place, again, I come back to that, we are an uneducated, robotic people. Why on earth would you waste your time and call 911, why not just have the opinion, the seller is not of your liking and move on?

It is the wussification of America, pure and simple. As always, it is the vocal minority that bullies the silent majority, and make no mistake, the majority of people in this country have more important things to worry about than the Confederate flag and the Maryland state song. Why don't we just erase the ACW from the history books and be done with it? I'm sure that will solve all of the problems this country seems to have because of that little disagreement. If it didn't happen then none of the problems can exist, right? So, let's all put our heads into the ground, pretend none of it happened, and get on with our new, PC lives. -- Al

That's short sighted. Go back 150 more years and slavery never happened.

There's an Indian at the door. He says go back another 200 years and rid us of the white man. ^&grin

I remember a few years ago Figarti came out with there new Marines & Japanese sets. The one Marine set was suppose to represent the picture taken on Mt. Surabachi with the Marines grouped together raising their arms etc, I'm sure everyone has seen it. It at the time before the flag raising picture became famous, was showing the victory on Surabachi . But in the Figarti rendition there was a black Marine. I brought the inaccuracy up to Rick and he more or less stated they did it to be PC correct.
So even the toy soldier industry is not immune.

Gents...a reminder that this is a toy soldier forum, not a PC bashing forum.

Let's get back to enjoying our little hobby....

It is incredible how even after so many years, they keep on punishing, provoking the south.A mixing of hypocrisy, political correctness and bad faith. They should know that the american culture comes from the south: dishes, music, litterature.

There was a native American amongst those men and Johnny Cash wrote a song about him.

The man's name was Ira Hayes and he was a Pima native American. In addition to the Cash song, there has been a biographical movie about him called The Outsider (starring Tony Curtis as Hayes). Plus, Hayes was portrayed by Adam Beach in the Eastwood movie Flags of Our Fathers. Hayes also portrayed himself in the flag raising reenactment staged in the John Wayne movie Sands of Iwo Jima. -- Al

It very much concerns me that because of the current generation my grandchildren will come of age not in the Land of Liberty but in the land of the Politically Correct . . . .

Ain't that the truth. Schools with no final exams or letter grades; sports leagues where every participant gets a feel good trophy whether their team won a game or not and the closely allied leagues that don't keep score; history where only one side is told and the half erased; it's wussification, pure and simple. God help the USA. -- Al

I would be interested in whether the American members of Treefrog see voluntary voting as a contributing factor? In Australia it is compulsory, although the penalties are minor, and though there are some who cast what we call a donkey vote (just placing the candidates in numerical order), it does seem to limit (to a certain extent) the impact of a well organised minority with an agenda. If ten percent of the nation belongs to a group that is heavily politicised and motivated to vote in an election that has a fifty percent turnout, its influence is doubled.

It's a bad idea. The Soviet bloc countries had compulsory voting, too.

No, the ballot is a right, and to exercise it is a moral obligation, but we should not force people to exercise it. And forcing people to vote doesn't mean that they're going to make any better a decision than they do now.

I don't think our Founders would have held with it, either. In fact, I think they would have be unable to understand the concept. Their concept was that each of us would have the maturity to see why we should participate, and then each of us would decide for ourselves. We they spoke of virtue, it was of the idea that each person must govern himself, and in that way, we'd have a rational society, a society of liberty. Or to put it another way, take care of the little things, and the big things take care of themselves.

I found out about him through the Johnny Cash song
I saw Flags of our Fathers
I did not know he was in Sands of Iwo Jima
Will have to re watch that.

A lot of people who don't vote actually see it as a vote for a growing number of Americans are sick of our politicians and don't see any worth voting for. Most are seen as fat and greedy and only care about themselves. As you've seen recently they have been putting on quite a show that they "care"so much about people. They only care about a potential loss of votes.Congress has never had such a low approval rating as they do now.

I don't think re-watching Sand of Iwo Jima will be of much help. Hayes re-enacted his part in the flag-raising for the film, but it will be a short view at best and I don't remember being able to ID him, but it has been a while since I've seen it. I don't recall if he even got credited in the film listings. -- Al
