It Just Keeps Getting Better - Maryland OH MY Maryland (1 Viewer)

The man's name was Ira Hayes and he was a Pima native American. In addition to the Cash song, there has been a biographical movie about him called The Outsider (starring Tony Curtis as Hayes). Plus, Hayes was portrayed by Adam Beach in the Eastwood movie Flags of Our Fathers. Hayes also portrayed himself in the flag raising reenactment staged in the John Wayne movie Sands of Iwo Jima. -- Al

Very tragic story. Chris

Now the PC Montgomery County, Md. Executive Isiah Leggett is leading an assault on county history by ordering the removal of a statue dedicated to Confederate soldiers from Montgomery County from the grounds of the county courthouse. The statue was a gift from The United Daughters of the Confederacy and was placed in 1913. Leggett has no plan in place other than to move it and put it in storage. There is serious doubt if he has the legal power to move it and a public debate is now underway. The statue has already been moved from a prominent place in front of the courthouse to a shady, more remote corner of the grounds. Leggett has held the office of County Executive since 2006 and has never has a political stand on the statue until the recent tragedy in SC and has now jumped on the PC bandwagon. Outta sight, outta mind. -- Al

There is talk about removing the Southern Cross from flags and anthems worldwide and dismantling the Southern Cross itself. Something named the Southern Cross can only recall hurtful images of slavery and crosses burning. The Southern Cross which lights up the southern sky below the equator has insinuated itself onto the flags of Australia and Brazil and into the Australian national anthem. It has even made it's way onto the blue diamond shoulder patch of the US First Marine Division,

Makes sense as the movement to remove the word 'southern' from the English language gathers steam. After all, we can't afford all the angst and PTSS that the word 'southern' causes to people. Goodbye Southern Hemisphere, hello Bottom World. -- Al

But that's hemispherocentric, Al. Who are you to assume that the Northern Hemisphere is better than the Southern? Maybe the Northern Hemisphere should change its name. In fact, there's hemisphere privilege, enjoyed by the Northern Hemispherists. They owe the oppressed Southern Hemisphere an apology, and reparations.

:D

Prost!
