Joe Paterno Statue.... (2 Viewers)

And $30+ million in NCAA fines to be announced today. Where is that coming from at a public university? They have already paid the Paterno family over $10 million for some reason since he died. And then the lawsuits will add several more million.

Killer sanctions against PSU. $60 million in fines, no bowls for 4 years, vacate all wins back to '98(!), Paterno losses the title of most wins, loss of scholarships for 4 years, players can leave the program. No happy in happy valley today. The only thing I question is how the NCAA can fine a public school $60 million. Do the taxpayers pick up the tab for that fine? Where does that money go?

Interesting and brutal sanctions. I don't see how they can vacate the wins back to '98. Those games are done, why drag them into sanctions? Sure is a slam to the Paterno legacy, whatever remains of that outside of Pa. And good question about the fines. -- Al

The NCAA is like Big Brother. There can disappear you from history - at least in their own minds. They did this with my school USC recently. They vacated a number of wins including the BCS championship game. The PSU situation really hurts because vacating those wins means Joe no longer has the record for most wins. Something he hung on for another decade to do. He should have retired around ten years ago. And the program suffered from the extra years that he coached.

Maybe it would have been better if they had shut the program down for a few years. Wonder what the head coach is thinking today. Probably dialing Bellichek as we speak.

I agree, their football program should be pulled indefinably. Way too many people involved in this cover up for the almighty dollar.

Nobody seems to be thinking about the kids. They didn't do this. Why punish thousands for the action of a few.

The $60 million fine is supposed to be used for victims of abuse centers, as long as the center is not PSU related. Not much, and probably doesn't help the Sandusky victims, but it might benefit some future victims. -- Al

Do you mean Sandusky's victims or the football players? If the latter, they have a free transfer.

The football program, souveniers etc. made millions. I think thats where the money for fines will come from.

I read that the $60 million is equivelent to the football programs budget for one year. That may be why that figure was picked. -- Al

I heard the same thing. This is the closest a program can come to the "death penalty." Loss of wins usually follows the charge of "lack of institutional control." It's ironic, the cover up was supposed to protect the football program. Chris

I still don't think that the school and thousands of students and educators who have went to Penn St. should be punished for the actions of 4 or 5 people, whether they were the leaders of the school or not.I think the school has been humililated enough.I am also not forgetting the children who were scarred for life but I don't think even they would really want this.
Mark

I'll go out on a limb and guess that the children that were scared for life would probably like to see the whole campus bulldozed ! I don't care if it was one abused kid or 1000, this whole thing makes my skin crawl. Lives destroyed to protect a game and revenue. Maybe now the school can redeem itself by concentrating on something else like academics.

Agreed; in effect, the sanctions will in fact shut down the program for four years. All current players and all incoming freshman players can transfer, which no doubt most will do, not to mention with no bowl games for four years, who's going to want to go there and play during that time.

They should have just shut the whole thing down for four years and the 60 million fine is what the program generates in total revenue per season.

Imagine 60 million dollars per year from their football team.

I have no idea as to why they'd vacate wins; they vacate wins when a program cheats, the school or it's boosters get caught paying its players or if the program is found to have recruiting violations, vacating wins just destroys the legacy of the coach.

Above all of this, none of this matters, all that matters is the kids who were abused, end of story; the rest is secondary............

I fully understand why you might suggest such a ban based this travesty, but shutting down football would lead to the demise of a majority of the other athletic teams fielded by PSU which rely on funds generated by the football program. I see no need to punish those student athletes. I also do not understand why they had to vacate their football wins which were earned by the players on the field. I feel for everyone affected.

At least the Trojans rebounded with authority. I think we are looking at a Preseason #1 ranking.

Keep Calm & FIGHT ON!

Some of you who know me personally know that I spent 4 years in the administration of a "big time" Division 1 football program, so I probably have a slightly different opinion/view on the NCAA than others.

First and foremost, the victims in this case are top priority, it is a criminal case and they deserve all legal recourse that is available againts Sandusky. He is a predator no doubt.

Regarding the cover-up, and my disclaimer is that I am not a JoePa football fan, but I do respect him for his 50 years of service. I truly believe he is a convenient dead scapegoat. Now, that doesn't mean I think he is blameless. IMO, he is guilty of not doing more. When he reported it, his superiors buried it. If he had any inkling that it was true especially as the facts mounted, he should have blown the whistle himself. We just don't know the full fact picture, he is not here to confirm/deny etc, he died. And I for one cannot simply take the word/report of Louis Freh as gospel. I believe there are numerous faux paux/questions in that man's FBI career and his report makes too many assumptions. It is easy to lay a lot of blame at his Joe's feet now. Again, he played a part, but I am not convinced it was to the extent that report claims. Now , regarding the other officials he reported it too, the campus/state police, plenty of blame to go around there!

To the sanctions, unforutnately, as much as they punish Penn State, they will be felt also in the Big Ten and much of college football. All you have to do is dig into your history books and read about SMU and their death penalty and you can make correlations to the current state of conference realignment as that was the catalyst that dismanted the Southwest COnf and was the first step to where we are today. I personally do not like the National Super Conferences that have been created. Talk about doing things for the dollar..............................

College Sports need rules, regs and enforcement, unfortunately the NCAA continues to be biased in some cases, vendetta in others and inconsistent in general in its approach to sanctions. In this case, the new Pres decided to flex his muscles b/c he could. Can you imagine the PR nightmare if Penn State appealed this one like every other University does in any of the cases????? Yeah right, they could have received virtually any punishment and they would have accepted it. 60 Million in fines is ridiculous, why not just suspend the program for a time if you were truly punishing Penn State and want to rebuild a new culture there?? Who gets the $60M/? NCAA that's who.

In the end, had the police investigated the original allegations thoroughly, this would have ended much sooner with less victims, sad but true. Instead, you have way too many victims and heartache. On the other side, you have one of the Greatest College Football Legacies as tarnished as possible. I don't think Joe Paterno deserves all of that either.

Just my 2 cents.

Beau,
I forgot both of these excellent points in my long winded post. Great post. The vacating of wins is just ridiculous and does nothing for anyone and the other teams will be a casualty as a result of this. No football money, nearly every other sport suffers. Football is the major revenue generator for a university athletic program.
