It is a film full of brilliant lines. I also love the sequence when Grimes (Richard Boone) comes up the hill to negotiate with the group and Newman says "Hey, I got a question. How do you plan on getting back down that hill?". It really highlights the ruthless practicality of Russell's personality, his view on life. Grimes realizes he's screwed, that Russell isn't the civilized milquetoast to be intimidated. The film repays close attention to it's subtleties. -- AlThat is a great moment in the film. Another is towards the end when Newman and Diane Cilento (Jessie) discuss whether they should help Favor’s wife. No one has the courage except them to do so. There was also one scene where one of the characters mentions “the days of our lives.” I can’t recall if March said it but I wondered whether it was said as an allusion to The Best Years of our Lives.
