John's 10 New Sudan Releases (1 Viewer)

Mike,

That's not the impression I had when I talked to him at the Hackensack Show last November. I think this range will be expanding, with camels and so forth. I think he's trying to appeal to people outside his present ranges and that's what he indicated to me at the time.

Brad...I know for a fact...that John has said that he was trying to expand into something more than the 7 Years War...something to draw a new fan base other than FIW...he has even hinted that he has become somewhat complacent with doing the same figures and wanted to attempt the challenge of some other things...

on this forum alone, there has been a lot of public clamoring and petition over Bushy Run, Ticonderoga, William Henry, just to name a few and a couple of other wars and battles from longtime Jenkins collectors...

I had always had the impression that the Khartoum set was a "tester" set and not much else was to follow...

now I see 10 new prototypes of what appears to be British 42nd Highlanders...I can't imagine that John would make these unless he intended on making Mahdists to compliment them...so I'm sure something else is to follow...

if John has indicated to you that this is his new direction or that this is his "new series"...it's groundbreaking news to me...I speak to him regularly and never got this impression or even an inkling that this was his new direction...

but again...he never would of made 10 stand alone Highlanders...so there must be more coming...

maybe an announcement of some type is forthcoming soon...

maybe these prototypes are the announcement...

right now Wm. Britain has 26 individual pre order sets of 42nd Highlanders, Camel Corp troops and Mahdists in Treefrogs store...

26 sets...

Oh yes, there will be plenty to keep us Sudan collectors happy. :)

Later today I will be posting the answers to all the questions we gathered together. :D

Mike,

I defer to you but when I asked him about camels, for instance, his answer and or look was something like (and please don't quote me) maybe or all in good time. I just got the general impression that this wasn't a one shot deal. I don't think most manufacturers would do a one shot deal; it consumes too many valuable resources.

Brad

You are spot on about this. When I talked to John in October he said that he would develop the Sudan range if it caught on with the initial Khartoum set and it has. He even mentioned the possibility of a gunboat which he has previously done in wargame scale. He also told me that as a wargamer 19th C British colonial wars have always been his favorite subject. Since he is doing the Gordon Relief Expedition camels are a given. His conversations with Louis in October also indicated a much larger focus than just a short series. The Sudan has certainly already expanded John's collector base which he told me was one of his goals since there is a finite number of 18th C collectors in the market. So as Jeff says the SUDAN will likely make a lot of collectors happy this year.

Here is the photo Andy referred to. However, this particular sculpt doesn't seem to be anything like the ones shown today, which are clearly superior and better than anything I've seen for that kind of range.

I think this may be the same figure Brad. This whole group should really look sharp once painted.

Dave,

As you mentioned, this will be great once they're painted. I think the older figure is the one you pointed out, just improved.

I remember that talk about riverboats. Just don't remember if I heard it from Randy or John. Sign of old age I guess; my son says I can't remember anything anyway :)

These JJD Sudan sets are fantastic and paired with new Britains sets, it is going to be a great time for the "little wars". Now, where did I put my pot of gold? -- Al

I don't want to put a damper on anybody's hopes but I don't think JJ and Britain's will match up scale wise.

Yep,count me in for these, they looked superb yesterday:cool:

I know its a totally different conflict and they are wearing different uniforms etc, but to me they are very reminiscent of the 'last eleven at the Battle of Maiwand'

Oh, and there's only ten of them!

Yeah, but the 66th had a killer dog!:D -- Al

The dog was called Bobbie:
Bobbie was the name of a British regimental mascot dog, a mongrel from Reading, who accompanied his regiment to Afghanistan and became involved in the disaster of Maiwand. He survived and upon his return to England was presented to Queen Victoria

Unfortunately, a year later, Bobbie was accidentally run over and killed by a hansom cab in Gosport. He was stuffed and can be seen today at the regimental museum in Salisbury:eek:

I always thought it would be noticeable ..meaning the size... when you compared Jenkins with W.B. I didnt think they really matched up well.

Time will tell.I hope they do for the guys who are going to collect them.
