John's 10 New Sudan Releases (1 Viewer)

Superb!! Will be passing on this line, but simply superb!!! Although they have not been painted, another jump in the quality of JJD's sculpting. John should moustaches on all his figures!!!

Actually, I was hoping for a similar release --- Afghan, not Sudanese.

The Gordons tunics on John's figures can be repainted khaki and used for Afghanistan as seen in these examples by Wm. Hocker

"The Sudan had 10 highlanders with more planned so c.18 in all; plus Royal Marines Light Infantry and other units to form a square for the battle of Abu Klea."

An answer given by John about the range at the London show to a collector posting on another forum. This confirms what John had told Louis in October.

Thanks for hunting this down Randy. I believe this range is going to be a real gem.

There has been a lot of confusion about the new Gordon's of the Nile series......

As per John on 4/4/10...

"The Gordon Highlanders which were the 75th, will be perfect for The Battle of Tamai 1884, or El Teb a month earlier."

If I understand him correctly...

in a nutshell...

we may see the first sets of Highlanders in July...
16 prototypes (at least) released in sets of 2 each month...
followed by sufficient Mahdists beginning in October...
after their preview at the Chicago show...
later followed by Royal Marine Light Infantry...

and entertaining some other ideas in the future...as he says he has lots of options...

This sounds like a great series to get into...big projections and a very diverse collection.

I am decided I will collect this series.

These look even better than the K&C Crimean Blackwatch and they are not even painted yet! Holy Crap! Those are the most wonderful looking figures I have seen
since the Conte spartan plastic sets!

John told me the other day that he is sculpting his figures to be compatible with the new Britains Sudan ranges. So if you are going to do the Battle of Tamai, you will surely want to pick up multiples of the Britains Black Watch Highlanders, York and Lancasters and Fuzzy-Wuzzies as well to make a complete battle diorama. We will be looking forward to more of your awesome scenes in 2010. "Welcome to the Desert of the Real" (as Morpheus tells Neo in the Matrix)

W. Britain Battle of Tamai figures:

September (4 figures –total $120)
27006 - British 42nd Highlander Charging #1 $30.00
27007 - British 42nd Highlander Standing Firing #1 $30.00
27019 - Fuzzy-Wuzzy Charging with Sword #1 $30.00
27020 - Fuzzy-Wuzzy Charging with Spear #2 $30.00

October (8 figures –total $240)
27008 - British 42nd Highlander Defending with Bayonet #1 $30.00
27009 - British 42nd Highlander Lunging with Rifle #1 $30.00
27018 - British 42nd Highlander At-The-Ready #1 $30.00
27022 - Fuzzy-Wuzzy Attacking with Sword #1 $30.00
27023 - Fuzzy-Wuzzy Falling Wounded #1 $30.00
27024 - Fuzzy-Wuzzy Defending with Spear #1 $30.00
27025 - British York and Lancaster Regiment Standing Firing #1 $30.00
27027 - British 42nd Higlander Piper #1 $30.00

This might have been already mentioned, but on another forum there was info that John is working with his factory to create greater variation in poses. That really comes through in looking at the new Sudan and BM prototypes. They are much more dynamic in appearance.

It's perfect that JJD is doing the Gordon Highlanders as they were in Buller's square at Tamaai and helped save Davis' collapsing square where the Black Highlanders ( which W Britain is producing) were fighting for thier lives.
Now a possible 16 poses of the Gordon highlanders is good news!

They will be wearing the grey serge jackets and Gordon tartan

Gordon Highlanders
This is the uniform worn by the highlanders at the battles of El Teb, 29th February 1884 and Tamai, 13th March 1884.

They're gonna be good. Must resist new line...getting weaker...weaker...

Was June the first anticipated release date on these? I'm really looking forward to seeing a couple of these in full color soon.

Before this line was releases, I was really hoping that the new release would have been the Second Afghan War (British). In the early 1880's, the Gordon Highlanders saw considerable action in Afghanistan as part of the Second Afghan War. Three or four years later, the Gordon Highlanders were in Sudan. Seems the Blackwatch was not in the Afghan conflict, I could be wrong on this as my research effort was really limited.

I am guessing that much of the equipment would have been the same between Afghanistan and the Sudan, but with some changes ---- seems the Afghan jacket for the Highlanders was brownish tan versus a gray for the Sudan.

Clearly, these Gordon Highlanders are John's best work with well done faces. But until I can judge the native Sudanese figures (assuming they will often be Hadendoa tribesmen), I am passing on the set. The WBritians Hadendoa figures I have seen are not doing it for me yet, at least for now.

I suspect there are a fair number of us that would also like to see the 2nd Afghan war produced some day. Another fascinating conflict from the era with some pretty clear parallels to what is currently taking place, yet again, in that part of the world. The Black Watch were indeed not present, but the Gordons were, along with the 72nd Seaforths (wearing Royal Stewart pattern trousers). Also as you pointed out, the Gordon's were wearing khaki and not the Grey serge as in Sudan.

I do like the WB Hadendowa figures though (probably my favorites of the entire range in fact). Looking forward to all of it basically. :)
