Julie's JJD Treasure Hunt Adventure! (2 Viewers)

Wonderful story, mind you, you will be painting for months. Looking forward to the end result, will it be better than the finished version which will be eventually supplied by John? Does not matter, yours will be unique. Good luck. Robin.

Konrad...

congratulations!!!

I could not think of a more deserving person I would want to win that...

clean your eye glasses real good...

maybe get a jewelers magnifying head band and get to work...

no rush...it will take a while...

but I would like to see the finished results in 2 weeks...^&grin...^&grin...^&grin...

just kidding...

take your time...

you will have a real show piece that you can be proud to won...

Congratulations, Konrad. Good things come to good people. Couldn't happen to a nicer guy. And you have the project of a lifetime.:wink2:^&grin :salute:: -- Al

Congrats Konrad!!! COuldn't have gone to a nicer guy!

I also won a little something special! For me it was from Crown Miniatures and it was the War of the Roses Flagbearer!

I am going to leave mine as is and purchase the finished product to display them side by side! (a tad cheaper for me to get the finished one, than you to get yours! )

a before and after...

that is actually a good idea...

Hi Guys,

thank you very much for all the nice comments.
They are much appreciated.

@ Zach
Congrats to your War of the Roses Flagbearer.
Keeping it as it is and getting the painted release is exactly what I would have done.
But as you say, when it comes to 37 figures and a boat, that option is no longer there :wink2: ^&grin

@ Pat
You got a good question there, Pat, if they gonna be glossy or matte?
The initial painting will be with matte Vallejo Acrylic colors, and I hope it will work out.
Now, if they will receive a high gloss varnish at a later date, I don't know that yet, but it is possible.
You know, I did it to many perfectly fine painted matte figures, back then in my "Matte to Glossy" thread :wink2:

As of the painting I will have to know first, what Regiment's colors John Jenkins has in mind to issue this set with?
Because for sure, I want to pick a different one, and not copy the original.

There are a million questions going around in my head right now, how to approach this project, and how to get it done.
But it's a pleasant problem :wink2: ^&grin

Hi Konrad,
I couldn't be happier for you.A great gift for a great guy.{bravo}}:salute::

Nice one Konrad, well done {bravo}}

Cheers

Martyn:)

Congratulations !!!

What an amazing piece and very well done...a lot of work for you, but well worth the result.

The collector Angels are on your side.

Well done. Major grats on this wonderful piece !!!! I would simply leave the piece as is. No way would I consider having this painted.

Good one Konrad. If this is considered a prototype, I'm with Fraxinus and leave it unpainted.

Konrad,

This is a link to the first segment of a you-tube thread on the Battle of the Plains of Abraham. It is very different from most descriptions as it focuses on the landscape.

Three part you-tube thread. Really, really good stuff. Great for diorama makers and such. Probably great for those interested in gaming as well, actually superb for that.

(1) The piece can be used for the Battle of Beaufort, failed British assault at the Montmorency Falls, prior to the Battle of the Plains of Abraham (PoA).
(2) PoA itself.
(3) Lake Ticonderoga under Amherst, 1759, where they hauled these boats from the Hudson River to Lake George and then to Lake Champlain after the capture of Fort Carillon (Ticonderoga) from the French (Empire in the Mountains, Bellico, Page 186) - truly outstanding book, with a wonderful, wonderful focus on "naval' elements on Lake George and Lake Champlain during the French and Indian War.
(4) Standard British Barge so anywhere "Naval" - Havanna (Cuba) and Martinique !!!

Painting link below, but it lacks the "town" element at the base of the cliff. See you-tube above.

I could be wrong, but I think someone indicated that the figures are sculpted as the 15th Regiment ---- Hello, Martinique, White Sand Beaches, Palm Trees and Rum Coolers with Paper Umbrellas !!!

For Martinique = http://www.kronoskaf.com/syw/index.php?title=1762_-_British_expedition_against_Martinique

Again,
Grats.

Konrad, I think I would leave this set as is,too. John gave me an SE-5 that was a gray painted master, which I got him to sign and it now sits in all it's gray glory next to the regular issue painted SE-5. I realize painting my 'Gray Ghost' would be extraordinarily difficult but I wouldn't do it even if it was easy. It is a rarity, like yours, and there are probably no more than 1 or 2 others in existence. It's rarity is what makes it valuable and meaningful to me. Just my 2-cents. -- Al

Konrad...

me and Ken talked about this yesterday...

we both agreed that we wouldn't repaint the master...

it is unique in it's own right...
rare in this form...
it has it's own mystique in the unfinished gray...

if you painted it...
I don't think you would enhance the value to equal a JJD painted version...

I personally would buy a small display case and never touch it...

this may have great appeal one day to someone that wants to buy it...
and paint a specific regiment in it...

I wouldn't touch it...
it would be quite a project...
and if it's not done professionally...
you may hate it...

Thanks much, guys, for all the pros and cons regarding my initial plans.
I really appreciate the varied feedback.

Got in touch with John Jenkins the last two days.
He actually is looking forward to see it in a "gloss" finish {eek3}.
Said he really enjoyed seeing some of his figures in the high gloss finish, when I did them back at the times of my "Matte to Glossy" thread.
He also loved the glossy work of fellow forum member "Dragoon", who came up with it first and inspired me to do it as well :wink2:
Mind you, that that will require me to paint them decently in the first place.

And, by the way, he also mentioned that the release will be as the 15th Regiment.

Well, as Paul said, he ships the set for me today, so by Thursday or Friday I should have it in my hands.

If it would be a set which will be available for a few 100's of $'s, I wouldn't hesitate at all, and keep it as it is, and proudly display it next to painted version.
But I don't see that possible, being a set of a large boat and 37 troops.

Then still, it makes for a rather unique and nice display as it is.
And I doubt very much that many more of such sets are or will be around, if another one at all.

I also am with Mike Miller, that there is absolutely no way I can enhance the set by painting it myself.
Tried that with other castings several times and when it was all said and done, I "hated" them ^&grin :wink2:

So, comes Friday, and I have all the pieces in my hand, looking at all the angles, I will probably get second thoughts real quick about my painting plans.
Those Grenadiers are all sitting with the rifle in their hands in front of them.
How in the world should I paint their bodies behind the arms and rifles in an accented and decent finish?
I read a comment of a well known miniature painter at some point, that said: If you can see it, you can paint it.
I very much doubt that with my abilities.

Who knows, maybe Uncle Sam is good to me at next year's tax return ^&grin, and I am actually able to put up a side by side.
But if not, or if other Toy Soldiers are "more important", I can still rest assured to have a good looking and most unique item on display with this "master".

This subject is not over yet ^&grin
Lots of thoughts, lots of thoughts :wink2:

Konrad
