Hello Forum Members, specifically King and Country collectors,
I would really like to know if I have made a correct *****sment in this e-Bay auction. The auction was for K&C Arnhem ’44 Series Set #2 ‘Fighting Withdrawal’ Limited Edition Retired 6 pieces, with original box and foam. After 26 bids the hammer went down at $350.00 USD. So far so good. A careful look at each of the pieces in the sellers excellent photographs clearly show a gloss finish. See for your self: http://www.ebay.com/itm/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=140625754346.

I have seven sets of the K&C Arnhem ’44 series, each purchased boxed and complete, at the time of original issue, and every figure is in a matte finish. Were any of the series issued in a gloss finish? I’m certain that there will be individuals who will say, big deal, just repaint each figure in dull-coat.
What troubles me is the seller’s words contained in his description of the set:

“These and many, many more "modern" toy soldiers have been consigned to me by a colleague to sell on her behalf. Keep checking back over the coming weeks and months as I list approximately 3-5 lots per week. Nearly all of this large collection was amassed in the mid-late 1990s. The gentleman had excellent taste and so you can expect several rare, limited edition, and unusual sets, many from King and Country. 95% is still in original boxes and near mint. I will not end auctions early.

About Me: I am a seasoned collector-dealer of old toy soldiers, with a solid 23 years of experience selling only the finest in antique lead, iron, and composition figures. I am very finicky about paint condition and originality of the items I sell, and check and recheck them to ensure what I describe and photograph is what you receive. You can rest assured that what you see is what you'll get. No unmentioned mismatches, hidden repairs, crafty repaints, or any other monkey business here!”

What are your thoughts? Probably, 'Get a life!'

Jim...

I was under the impression that this was the start of the matt format. I don't have any of the set that are in a gloss style and don't know anyone with any.

Does not mean they did not just never heard of any of the arnhem sets in gloss

Mitch,
My point exactly!! We will see if there is complete unanimity within the forum.
Thanks for the response.

Jim

My bet is this is a camera flash on a white glossy background. I don't think they are gloss, just "shiny" from the photo.

They do have a gloss look to them and maybe they were given a coat.

Most interesting is the box they are in. It is an original box - I actually recognize the handwriting very well, I have boxes with that persons hand writing.

It was a rarely used box - the only other item I've seen in that particular box is the Roman catapult and crew.

Gideon,
They used that box for a few other Arnhem sets too - I have a jeep and piat team in those, they are odd boxes! I still think this is a camera flash background trick, but stranger things have happened in this hobby!

Those are pretty nice...$350 is out of my league for troop sets, even considering the rarity, seems a bit steep for me.
