The Wermacht were just as bad as the SS. There is no alternative military history of teh war that excludes the holocaust. Micheal Burleigh's book on the Third Reich is great and shows just how murderous the whole thing was. It makes no sense not to collect LAH but to collect the rest of teh German armed forces. The eastern Front was particulalry horrible. I must agree with Brad on this one

Well can someone explain why the German Army of WW2 is so popular in the toy soldier world today? When I first got into toy soldiers, it was British Colonial, Zulu war, Napoleonics etc. Now when a new company comes along what's the first thing they come out with? WW2 Germans. When it comes to WW2 I would think the Americans and British would be the top sellers but that's not the case. I don't get it.

They are all very bad men.....Wermacht and SS Waffen very bad.....that's it I'm selling all my German soldiers and German artillery on E-Bay......where they are worth whatever some er er estute buyer will pay for them......:D just trying to ligthten up this thread a bit.......Good nite to all and God bless

If you are saying that the German army behaved badly because they killed civilians then I'd have to say you must be blind to the fact that in "modern'" war, Civilians ARE targets. The Americans and the British killed way more "innocents" than the germans killed of there "innocents" Spare me the "we did it cause they did it" aurgument, before any war ends civilians ALWAYS become legitimate targets.
NOTE: I am not endorsing the practice, merely stateing the obvious, Ethnic cleansing is a whole different subject, but as i said before, it has, is, and will be a reality for longer than I will live, it is going on today as we speak. While the Nazi were one of the best (not the best, I believe the Soviets topped them) at the practice, there's factions out there today that promise even greater slaughter in the name of any number of causes.

Before World War II, war was generally conflicts between combatants, not non-combatants. Civilians did get killed but that was not one of the aims of war. The battle was for territory. Even in World War I, the beginning of modern warfare, civilians were not generally involved. Actually, the beginning of modern warfare of this kind may be traced back to the U.S. Civil War.

The runups to World War II (i.e. the Spanish Civil War -- Guernica) was a taste of what would happen. There had been in the history of Europe ethnic cleansing (pogroms, the slaughter of the Armenians) prior to World War II but in World War II, Hitler made the decision to eradicate a people; and to try to bring a country to its knees by bombing the civilian population. The Allies, with strategic bombing, followed suit and we had total war.

It generally wasn't until the Fascist powers initiated the practice that we had total war and engaging in the kinds of act described by Ray.

Humans are for the most part a pretty violent species. Our history is rife with genocide, mass slaughter and horrors on an almost unimaginable scale. Sadly, this has not improved much, even to this day. But no matter how often it happened in the past, this does not excuse the next Hitler, or Pol Pot, or Osama Bin Laden, who gets a bunch of followers fired up to kill off another group of people whom said leader is afraid of, or jealous of, or hateful towards. The only common denominator in the sad history of man's inhumanity to man is the involvement of organized religion throughout (sorry Pete, not a value judgment, merely a statement of historical fact). As long as religious leaders permit or encourage their followers to commit acts of violence in the name of the diety de jour, there will never be a shortage of martyrs, or the victims of martyrs. If there is a god, I'm pretty sure he must have an especially nasty corner of hell reserved for religious leaders who encourage mass slaughter in his name.

It's all a tough and ugly subject, but thank you all for Keeping it a conversation. I might seem in this instance to be trying to minimize the guilt of Germany under Hitler, though i am sure we all understand I'm not.
I have some incite to german people thru my family and actually have spent several years of my life living there.
It is really a most common society, Warm people, hard working, give you the shirt off there back type people, more like americans than different from them.
For me, it's one of the great mysteries and it holds fast my interest in that period as no subject I have ever known, How so fine a people can be so corrupted with such horrific results.
In any case thank you all, for threads like these are what keep me checking this site whenever I have the oppurtunity.

You know - I am still trying to understand how many of you feel the SS were just as bad as the Regular German Army. The SS were a very sadistic Army Elite Soldiers - it wasnt that you simply went down to the German Town Hall and said I want to be in the SS - you were selected and chosen.

Yes - bad guys were in all ranks - but the training for the SS was much different - I am not sure many of you understand that?

So it's all forgotten now and let's hear no more about it...

This all leads up to my favorite Fawlty Towers quote of all time:

German: "Will you stop mentioning the war?"
Basil: " You started it."
German: " We did not start it."
Basil: " Yes you did, you invaded Poland!"

Nice one Shannon. You got my Fawlty Towers reference.

Louis, Rest assured there is a God the one true God who is all powerful and all knowing who will judge ALL men according to their deeds and they will not be justified by which "organized religion" they belong to but whether or not they are humble before God and obey his word.....and love their brother......and yes you are correct there is a spot in hell especially prepared for false religious leaders.......that's why it is very important to carefully examine what is being taught..........
