Rob, I don't think it was Mel Gibson they were complaining about, more like the British officer(s) in the movie that ordered the Australian troops over the top to certain death. Of course the average Aussie would not know that more British died at Galliploi than Australians.

Hey Oz,yeah i meant that people shouldn't always take what they see in films as Gospel.I meant that these two Australians hated us BECAUSE of a Mel Gibson film.We have all heard about Gibson, who would take his version of things as truth?.I may be wrong here but i'm sure i read that the famous charge at the end of the film was actually ordered by an Australian officer(as i say i may be wrong on that but i thought this fact had recently been unearthed?)I'm so sick of Hollywood stereotyping my countrymen as callous murders, when things were more complicated than that.

As for the Bryan ferry thing i take your point. But Its a very fine line isn't it?.James,as you said these buildings do hold a sinister and murderous symbolism to some, or is a building just a building?.

Rob

Yeah I was thinking more of the uniforms and the spectacle than the actual buildings. It all looks so fantastic and I guess this is a great example of propaganda and public relations at work!
However on the subject of the buildings how amazing is that bronze Eagle from the Chancellery(?) in the IWM? It was quite an incredible piece of history to actually see and touch.

Your right there mate. What an exhibit and as you say to be able to touch it,to think of what that Eagle witnessed.I'm amazed the Russians gave it to us actually, you'd have thought they'd want that on display in pride of place sort of thing.

I also read somewhere that it was an Australian officer that ordered the attack. Btw, I don't think Mel Gibson had much say in that movie because he was only a young actor at the time.

You may chose to collect toy soldiers as a novelty, and that is fine. I, however, collect toy soldiers to commemorate the single most important momment in the last 500 years or so, the Second World War. Of course German Combat troops were by far the most significant part of the nazi war machine. The fact that the Allies were able to overcome that war machine is the reason we have a civilization today. Remembering that we were able to overcome far better equipment and commanders with numbers and courage is to me the best reason to collect toy soldiers. They are a three-dimensional reminder which draw the attention of anyone who sees them, for the good or for the bad.

With all due respect...I try to keep toy soldier collecting a hobby and give it minimal signifcance as a memorial or poltical position.......It has been my experience that most people who "lived the war" have little or no desire to create a 3 dimensional reminder of their pain sufferring and loss..........My father will attest to that.......

As heavy as this conversation is getting. We should just throw all our TOY SOLDIERS away and most of US forget ,that we bought them to look at and play with........How a bunch of toys ever got to be symbols of the sinister reminders of the inherent evils of past and present mankind, is beyond me. Collectors like me and Charlie buy these things so we can forget the social crap of yesterday and today and tomorrow. They are toys.... If you feel so guilty about the percieved crimes to humanity that your collections might represent, then send them to me and I will carry the world's burden of the bleeding hearts as I play in the dirt with all my new and retired K/C pieces that you folks are going to give me..My toy soldiers nevered killed anybody.....ever....Michael

Ok,we were just talking. Each to their own.

Rob

I actually think this is one of the more interesting conversations we've had on this Forum in quite awhile. A lot of different things on this thread are being discussed.

I agree Brad, and i don't think anyone is saying 'You should think of your soldiers like this' we are just taking in different views and perspectives. After all discussion and understanding is what we need to protect us from the mistakes of the past.Brad,i'm not sure if you've seen it but the IWM Holocaust exhibition is very good indeed.Indepth and moving its well worth a visit should you Journey to these shores.

Correct....they are TOYS...bought to be played with and looked at.....I give them no more or less signifcance.......they are not memorials or politcal reminders......to give them significant value or meaning is folly.....this is my whole point........If one truly finds "any" of these things offensive they would not collect them....."any of them"....so my position is to play with our toys.......preferrably in the dirt.......over and out......

Oz,so there you go.By changing history for their own reasons (and i have a pretty good idea what they were)you influence one group of people in a negative mindset against another. And whats the result?.Years and years after the film i get "i hate you Brits because of that film"!.When the most moving and ****ing scene is based on a falsehood!!!.And so then do you get the director/producer or anyone else from the company standing up with the b*** they were born with and saying 'Eh sorry this was wrong,we apologise' no of course not because its only the bad old Brits and they probably deserve it anyway.Makes me sick.

Folly in your opinion.Others are entitled to theirs.

I’d say the fact it’s still a contencious issue after all this time is a good thing.
Imagine if people said :

“Nazi Germany? The Holocaust? 60 years ago? Never heard of it mate”

So the fact that it is an ongoing discussion can only be a good thing.
