Matthew, if memory serves me, the standard Lewis gun drum held 47 rounds. A double drum was developed, which held something like 97 rounds (not sure of exact number). The double drum was an attempt to extend the time for the gun until it had to be reloaded. As you say, reloading the Lewis was quite a job while in the air, and in combat. Before the development of the slide rail, where the gun was unlatched and pulled down to reload, the pilot would have to stand up in the cockpit to reach the gun, keeping the joy stick grasped between his knees, while he reached up to replace the drum. Many interesting and hair raising stories involving this activity are part of WW1 air lore. Not for the faint of heart! {sm5} -- AlI think that this is my favorite plane John has done to date. I was just thinking what a pain it must have been to change that gun ammo drum during flight. I don't think it had more that 50 rounds.
