It was 60 years ago today that Princess Elizabeth received word that she was now the Queen.

Long live the Queen!!

Wish I was able to make it over to the UK to join in on all of the celebrations that will occur this year.

Yep, for someone who inherited a job, Elizabeth has taken it seriously. No drunken bar fights etc. I saw her up close back in 1976 in Boston. I could have reached out and touched which of course I did not and would not have.

served Britain and the commonwealth with dignity and class. I am looking forward to the many events which celebrate her great reign.

Yep, deepest respects to her for her 60 years of service to this country. She has had ups and downs over the years but even the most testing of times for her she has kept her dignity throughout. I'll be in London this summer to celebrate her sixty years, long may she continue:salute::

A tremendous individual who has strode the world stage for so long that few can remember her father first hand, but her popularity is a bit of a paradox isn't it? I would assume that most, probably all, of the people on the forum are supporters of democracy, but here is the power of a figure who draws her legitimacy from history and tradition rather than the expressed will of the people. An echo of our past perhaps, but one that will be revered even more once she has gone.

I know he gets a bit of stick, but I am also a big fan of Phil - a man who says here I am, live with it.

Yes. A Boston columnist, writing about Diana and the Royal family described Philip during 1976 Boston visit as looking like he was wondering for his next drink was coming from. Philip does have one of the best minds of the 19th century. He does no real harm.

'Philip does have one of the best minds of the 19th century'.

I am in the middle of a long, unpleasant day at work at the start of a long, unpleasant week.

That made me laught. Thanks!

I learned this morning that she was in Africa when her father died. I wondered whether they still do that thing, where her head courtier or someone says ''The King is dead! Long live the Queen!" You'd imagine not, it doesn't seem to be the most sensitive way to tell someone of their parents death.

In fact she was caught short in the sense she was separated from her mourning clothes which all royals travel with in case of personal or national tragedy. As she and Phil approached the aircraft the line of cameramen waiting for her departure turned their cameras toward the ground so that their monarch would not be embarrassed in the eyes of the world. Change is inevitable, but some of those old courtesies suggest that not all of it is good.

Thing is its all based on tradition and, thats always hard to change. I think the RF have moved, quite a way forward in the last few years and, a driving force behind that must be the queen herself. I am glad we have a monarchy and, the title of Scotts post says it all for me. Long may she reign.

As for Phillip I think many posit his as a wildcard and, an oaf but, having seen several docs where he speaks he seems as sharp as a pin. I wonder how well physically and mentally many who mock him will be doing when they are a similar age??? Nothing wrong in not suffering fools lightly or, speaking ones mind.

I plan on enjoying my old age by letting folks know what I think. But as I'm not a Royal they may just increase my medication.
