Mike Tarantino's Toy Soldier Collection (2 Viewers)

At the same auction where I picked up the Bastion Prussian and Bavarian sets in the previous posts, I also won three of Tradition's sets PG1, PG2, and PG3 POTSDAM GIANT GRENADIERS. Although I already had set PG1, the lot with set PG2 also included set PG1, so I bid on it any way. That lot also included Set 101 which is a single figure of KING FREDERIC THE GREAT.

Set PG1 includes an officer, sergeant, drummer, and four men, Set PG2 is an add-on set with eight men, and Set PG3 has four each African drummers and pipers.

Since I now have two boxed sets of Tradition's PG1 with an officer, drummer, sergeant, and five men, I am selling the extra set for $100 if anyone is interested.

Those Bastion sets are very nice, very pretty! They would go well with their counterparts from Tradition's toy soldier catalog. The castings are of similar quality, and they're painted in the same style. Of course, they mix well with our Hiriart sets, too.

Prost!

For those of us who like traditional 54mm, glossy figures it is hard to beat Bastion or Hiriart. Fortunately, while Bastion is no longer in business, Hiriart is still going strong.

At the previously mentioned auction, I also picked up these two boxed Bastion Models sets, Set No. A.3 GRENADIER GUARDS, 1895. Set No. A.3 is described thusly: "An officer and men of the premier Foot Guards Regiment in Full Dress Order as worn for Guard mounting at the Royal Palaces." I already had an add-on set with eight men and no officer in my collection, but wanted the regular catalog set that included an officer, so, once again I wind up with extra duplicate sets just for the sake of one figure. Hmm? Maybe my wife is right and that I have a little OCD.

I just received the seven horses with new bases from Kingcast's Set No. P10 ROYAL CANADIAN ARTILLERY, 1890 which I had won at auction, but which did not include bases for the horses and therefore the horses would not stand up. Thanks to Mike DeMarco's excellent job of making new bases for me, I can now display the set. I have temporarily used a piece of Styrofoam as the base for the limber and gun, but will ask Mike to make me a 6 x 3 inch matching base for them, too. This set sold new for $350 in 1989.

Here is another Philippine mahogany World War II warbird that I got on eBay a couple of months ago. It is a British Mark.1 Lancaster Bomber in 1/72 scale. Both the B-29 and the Lancaster are in the same scale. I am not sure how long my wife will let me keep them on the piano.

118 bombing raids! Wow! USAAF planes were lucky if the made 25 . . . but they were doing daylight raids compared to the RAF nighttime sorties.

Some facts on the Avro Lancaster: 7,336 were built, its range was 1,660 miles, and bomb load was 22,000 pounds. This compares with the three WWII American four-engine bombers as follows:

Boeing B-17 12,731 Built; 3,400 Range; 17,600 Bomb Load;

Consolidated B-24 18,188 Built; 2,850 Range; 8,800 Bomb Load;

Boeing B-29 3,970 Built; 3,247 Range; 20,000 Bomb Load

The 65 sets in the October Hiriart delivery included 12 new sets for my collection. The first is a variation on set 1253 WORLD WAR I TURKISH INFANTRY, but in khaki with a mounted officer in green with a grey kolpak.

This is a special color party, with an officer on foot rather than mounted, version of set 1244 COLONIAL ASKARI, GERMAN EAST AFRICA.
