What repercussions would those be? Fan anger? Meh. It will fade with time. Would NYY fans switch to the Mets, Phillies, or another AL team? I sincerely doubt it.

Atlanta fans were furious/none too happy when Freddy Freeman wasnt resigned - and that was after he was instrumental in winning the World Series. And yet last year Braves attendance and fan interest was at all time highs.
Because winning is number one. Word is that Dansby Swanson, a home town boy, may be lost to free agency this year. No Braves fan wants that. But if signing him means putting too many eggs in one basket, "dont let the door hit you in the **** on the way out, Dansby."

One player does not a champion make in pro sports. GMs should know this by now, and not be bullied /coerced by a tough guy negotiator agent and/or "the talk radio crowd".
 
As always when it comes to a big name, the Giants were reportedly in the running to sign deGrom.

I can’t help but feel a sense of relief knowing that the Rangers signed him instead.

The Mets made him a fair offer but the Rangers offered more money for a pitcher who has played less than a full season in the last two years. He didn’t want to be here so it may be a blessing he left.

2 years 86 million...
I would consider that a substantial upgrade over deGrom...

surprised the Astros wouldn't pay him 43 a year...
they must have come in with a real low ball offer...

I guess Hunter Brown will take his spot...
his delivery is considered a Verlander clone...
hard to replace 18 wins...clone or not...

The Astros just keep plugging guys in, they'll be fine, arguably the best organization in baseball, Dodgers are a close second, Braves with all their young homegrown talent are probably third.
 
As a Mets fan, very happy with Verlander acquisition. Should be a good one-two punch with Mad Max. Tired of constant deGrom injuries and inability to go deep in games when needed.

He's a very good ballplayer but it makes you wonder what Judge is worth.

I don't see how they could pass on him...a solid fielder...only 30 years old...62 home runs and 131 rbi's...pricey...but hard to let him walk...

You are most welcome; as you know, my Dad was a Boston Police Officer and like you, he did not do his job surrounded by cheering crowds, he did it with his head down dodging bullets, punches, rocks and bricks thrown at him and people trying to and one time successfully stabbing him.

Knowing my Dad, I would not want be the guy at the other end of that knife, that was back in the old days where there was no left wing looniness/protect the criminals/youtube/cell phone videos.

The money these guys make today, I just can't wrap my head around it.

It's borderline insanity.

There are a lot of Yankee fans who felt they should let him go for that amount of money. However, the repercussions would have been too great.

I’m glad they re-signed him although I would have liked to have seen the Mets take a crack. The Mets are saving their ammo for Ohtani. At any rate, a player like Judge needs to be in NY.
