Some of what you say is probably true but the repercussions would be far worse if they didn’t sign him, which remains a possibility.
What repercussions would those be? Fan anger? Meh. It will fade with time. Would NYY fans switch to the Mets, Phillies, or another AL team? I sincerely doubt it.
Atlanta fans were furious/none too happy when Freddy Freeman wasnt resigned - and that was after he was instrumental in winning the World Series. And yet last year Braves attendance and fan interest was at all time highs.
Because winning is number one. Word is that Dansby Swanson, a home town boy, may be lost to free agency this year. No Braves fan wants that. But if signing him means putting too many eggs in one basket, "dont let the door hit you in the **** on the way out, Dansby."
One player does not a champion make in pro sports. GMs should know this by now, and not be bullied /coerced by a tough guy negotiator agent and/or "the talk radio crowd".
