A couple of things on the classified section brought this to mind.
Recently a member with only 4 post advertised a list of items for sale, fine. But a few months ago this member agreed to buy some items I had listed and asked me to set aside some more items to be purchased later at which time I did. Well after several weeks nothing. PM messages no response.
Now he wants to use this forum to sell. Should I be able to post about his past dealings to inform members of the above?
Also should the classified sales be used by dealers to list numerous items they have for sale?
Individual adds are then pushed way down the list where most would not catch them.
Maybe I,m off base with this but would like comments.

That's the problem. There is no way to judge. This issue has come up before and posts complaining about another member won't be allowed.

As for single listings getting pushed down, that can be handled by allowing only a few pieces per post to be listed. Or the vendor can just add to his thread to bring the item back up to the top.

The policy on your first question is no. If you want to tell people via pm or email that is fine.

Dealers are permitted to advertise here like anyone else.

Well as I recall prior discussions, you are supposed to be able to tell people to contact you for details about a given listing on Ebay so why should one here be subject to a different standard? That only seems reasonable since why should someone be able to ***** someone over in a transaction posted here with complete impunity and even worse, have the opportunity to do it again to another unsuspecting member here?

Concur with Spitfrnd. I would be curious to know the rationale behind not allowing posts about sellers who lack integrity. I would not buy from said seller if I were made aware of his/her identity.

How did what I say differ from what you said Bill? It's the same standard. You can say that if you have a concern about a particular seller without naming that seller publicly, please contact me, etc.

Well the question is what a former buyer can say to identify the reason to contact them? To be most useful, there has to be someway to give people a reason to contact that buyer other than "if you are thinking about buying from anyone here." I thought the former buyer could reference the item for sale so that at least members interested in such items would know to contact the former buyer. I took your first reply to suggest you could not do that? Honestly, I don't see what is wrong with simply giving feedback, which most forums that permit selling do allow.

This issue is being addressed on 2 separate threads which is most confusing.

Please refer to the adjacent thread: Large Collection of King & Country LAH Pieces.

Well actually there is not issue presented in that thread, just an explanation of a prior event. I am not confused by the two threads but rather the actual standard and potentially its rationale.:)

One of the Forum rules is not posting negative remarks about members. The classifieds are a free service and is not set up to arbitrate accusations of bad dealing. It's buyer beware. If I want to buy something on the classifieds, I either know the vendor or PM people I know on the Forum to ask about the vendor. And yes, people new to the forum would be at a disadvantage. But even Treefrog's new auction system has very little feedback yet.

If interested in an item, posting your interest may get you some feedback via PMs, especially as it is negative.

Brad and Terry have done a good job explaining Treefrog's stance of negative comments about people on the forum. Buying and selling in the Classifieds is done independently of Treefrog Treasures or oversight from moderators.
I've had several kind collectors over the years ask if they should cut us a percent of what they have received in a transaction in payment for use of our site and I've explained that it's just a free service we offer here on the forum. That said, we have no way of verifying how a transaction went between a buyer and a seller, and condition for instance can be very much in the eye of the beholder.
Since we are not set up to be monitoring and regulating buying, selling & trading (no, we don't monitor your private messages) it would be unethical for us to allow one person to blast another person publicly on the forum, possibly ruining their reputation when we have no way of knowing the whole story and what actually transpired in their dealings with one another. Also, sometimes when a deal hits a temporary snag (such as something arriving damaged) some people may jump the gun and paint the other person as unreliable, unethical etc. before the other person has a chance to try to resolve the issue. This has happened in the past and after several pages of warnings and saying how horrible it is to deal with so and so and other members chiming in, one "Oops, it's fine now" is not going to erase the doubt the preceding posts raised against the person in question.
That is why our policy has always been 'no publicly naming specific buyers or sellers' if you have an issue. That is also one of the reasons we now offer changingguardauctions.com. We DO oversee and monitor transactions there, we pay someone to do it and we have both buyer and seller feedback. We feel this is the fairest way to handle this for everyone.
Regards,

With respect Terry, I think I know all that quite well but that does not change the reasonableness of allowing a candid reference to a transaction with another member. If the facts are stated without emotion that should violate no rule even if the facts lead to a negative conclusion. There is no need to arbitrate any thing in such a case since any party should be free to give their own account. Moreover, if it is considered too direct for whatever reason, one should at least be able to say, for example, "if you are interested in my experiences in dealing with Terry, send me a PM." That is not a negative post merely one that offers informative for those who desire it.;)

Speaking from own experience, I have had 2 transactions over the years where I ended up slightly unhappy. One, honest mistake, bad luck, it was what it was.

The other...........arrogant jerk, I let it drop b/c just not worth the headache it was causing. It was an expensive endeavor, but not even the money was worth it. Unfortunately for me, more came to light elsewhere on the forum that I wish had known during my transactioN! Point is.....buyer beware.

Regards,

I can accept this as appropriate policy. However, this policy is not publicized in a readily accessible way anywhere on the forum that I know of. Newcomers, like me, could reasonably (but incorrectly) assume that transactions are monitored. I'm sure someone can point to rules of use somewhere, but that is purely a legal protection, not a means of reasonable communication.

Take a look at the guidelines under the Ebay section, where it clearly spells out the policy. Perhaps it should be in the Classified section as well.

I was a member of a 1/6th group and they had similar problems, they introduced a topic called Trade reference. You would record the members with whom you have had a successful trades with in this section. Also use it for discussions and questions about traders etc.. BUT NEVER TO REPORT BAD TRADERS. It worked and it stopped ppl clogging up other sections with questions.

If any mod would like to have a look i will gladly give them the web address so they could log in and check it out, see how it works etc..

Interesting idea Flynn. Sure, send us the web address. We're always open to trying to improve the forum experience for people.

You have me on this one JAGCDR. I do need to copy the guidelines from the eBay area and put them in the classifieds area as well. We're about to get a forum software overhaul very shortly and I think that will be a good time to get it posted properly. I will put it on my list :).
Thank you for your feedback.
