Hey Larso- guess I left a laundry list but no detailed reasons- here goes a brief explanation:
506- First unit I served in. Had a real esprit d corps and knew even in 1991 where they had been. Continue to perform above and beyond expectations (as do all the 500 series ABN/Air Assault units). Was one of the best (and easily most challenging) years of my life but the 506 laid the groundwork for who I am today. I simply could not imagine being alive and never having had that experience.
BRO- Big Red One- so many battles and history.
2ID- Second to none- the division I was in Korea.
3ID/4ID- The 4th's Campaigns in Iraq set standards few will ever achive- and I dont believe any other nation on earth could hope to match
7th Light- Not the most popular unit- my dad got order to Ft Ord a few weeks before I left to basic. When he reported in he had a 5 day infantry refresher course (my dad was the REMF of REMF's
) anyway, he made some buddies with some infantry platoon types who taught me some things before I left. Saw extensive action in the war against Japan and Korea (Nam too I believe???)
10th Mountain- the government could have saved the taxpayers a ton of money and just moved Ft. Drum to Afghanistan. Their actions in Italy (WW2) and today leave little doubt how awesome they are in extreme environments.
28TH ID- I served and was proud- 2/112th- had a go with the Germans in Huertgen.
29th- Omaha- nuff said
1,2,3 Armored- TANKS TANKS TANKS
Ranger Batts- Omaha and everywhere else the US saw fit to get the job done right
SF Teams/Brigades- Everythwere the US saw fit to get the job done right and keep it quiet
The professionalism and fervor of Rangers and SF are just beyond reproach. There is absolutely something different about the men who wear those tabs.
British Airborne- more the SAS really- the LRDG is something fasnicating.
Roman empire- IMO, the seeds of the first professional military. Unreal how many things they did that are still present today in the most modern of militaries.
