Most admired military unit? (2 Viewers)

Interesting topic to be sure and the replies have been interesting to say the least...

I would have to go with the following units: Great Britain

95th Rifles for their action in the Peninsular Campaign
Kings German Legion
93rds Sutherland Highlanders
The Corps of Guides in NWF/Afghanistan
The Camel Corps/Cavalry Division in Palestine WWI

US Army

6th and 11th Cavalry Philippines
2nd Armored Division 66th Armored Regiment North Africa to Berlin.
4th Armored Division 37th Armored Regiment for their action in breaking the siege at Bastogne to name one action
Special Forces

IDF Tank Forces

Selous Scouts

I can think of a lot of other units worthy of mention but will save it for another day.

Except for George no one has mentioned a pre WW II regiment.

For me, you would need to include British regiments like

Seaforth Highlanders
Black Watch
Buffs
Cameronians
Cold Stream Guards
Lifeguards

This is a tremendous resource, http://www.nam.ac.uk/research/famous-units

I hate to "nit pick" but do you mean The Life Guards (lifeguards hang around swimming pools:)) Coldstream is one word.:)

Larso's thread is not about war crimes and not wanting to take it down a different route feel free to PM me as they did Not maybe to the extent that other German and allied troops did but, there is evidence that they shot a number of civilians and POW

Well, the thread also speaks of "ADMIRING" , that' s why I prefer the "Nordland" to other waffen ss units who were sometimes even involved in the jewish killings, while the Nordland never.

For what I know they maybe committed some crimes against the partisans in Jugoslavia during their training, but it is true that atrocities were made by both sides in Jugoslavia. And anyway, still much, much, much less than the "Totenkopf" or "Das reich" for example.

Anyway, my favourite unit is maybe the italian ' Folgore" parachutists. They made a lot of heroic actions against the powerful 8th army, often attacking the tanks only with knives and molotov cocktails.

I've been thinking about this question for a few hours since I read the thread title and wow, what a difficult one to answer! Frankly, almost impossible, since so many units excelled in their fighting capacity throughout history. Since my thing is WWII, and certainly leaving many equally deserving units out, my picks are those that struck my mind first, so here it goes:

Division: US 101st/1st Marine; British 7th Armored Division (Desert Rats); German 2nd SS Panzer Division Das Reich; Russian 62nd Soviet Army
Regiment: 116th Infantry Regiment, 442nd Regimental Combat Team
Battalion: 2nd Ranger

Today: Seal Team 6

It may be that Nordland was established in 43 whilst all the other SS units associated with alleged atrocities were fighting for many years before. Have a read about the Von Salza unit and what they did to civillians who helped those who resisted the units fighting.

I don't for myself admire any military units I do have respect for their personal and fighting abilities etc and that is why I choose the SS first.

It's very hard to pick a British regiment. The 11th Hussars, who with everything else, were a recon unit in the desert, is high on my list. Always been found of the Green Howards and the Dukes (Duke of Wellington) too.

From an objective view, without regarding my own bias towards my country or my areas of interest, I believe the best fighting men or women the world has every seen are the Ghurkas, whether they fought for Britain, India, or their homeland of Nepal. I would challenge you to find a unit that has shone more disregard for death and sheer skill in combat in history.

That said, the following units also have demonstrated exceptional courage and skill throughout their histories:
The Légion étrangère
The Israeli Special Forces
The top secret units of US Special Forces (the ones you don't know about)
The Spetsnaz
The SAS
The Coldstream Guards

Units of the past or present units not currently in their past form:
The Gordon Highlanders
The British Royal Navy
The British light infantry regiments throughout the 19th century
The French Imperial Guard pre-conscription
The various Cossack tribes
Hungarian Hussars

I think the Spartans are hard to beat for the ancient world. There's a couple of Roman legions who have awesome histories.

Without question, THE MACEDONIAN PHALANX under Alexander the Great.
They conquered more territory and won more battles than any other unit in history.
Marching, foraging, building, laying siege and fighting their way through unchartered lands and peoples.
Imagine the discipline and strength to wield a 16 foot+ long pike in close formation with arrows rainning down on them in the heat of Persia!

His Companion Cavalry would probably be a close second.

Don't forget the gang of bricklayers that had to build Hadrian's wall during a Northumbrian winter!^&grin

Good topic. Not in any particular order:
101st Airborne (my son is currently in the 101st :smile2:)
SEALS
Delta
Iron Brigade
Rangers (my son will be a Ranger school instructor later this yr)
29th Division (my home state)
MD-Del Blues (AWI)
Zemke's Wolf Pack

I have always admired the United States Marine Corps. A long history of hot actions, going where and doing what was necessary. In particular at Belleau Wood, Guadalcanal, Tarawa, and ALL the other Pacific islands that had to be taken from a vicious and desperate enemy. Semper Fi! -- Al
To expand on my original answer, I have always admired the Spartan Army of antiquity as they were a dominant force for so long. I have also always been captivated by the development of air combat during WW1, which has led to my respect for those intrepid flyers and their squadrons such as Germany's Jasta 11 and 2, the RFC's 56 and 74 squadrons, the French Cigognes, and the USAS 94th and 95th squadrons. -- Al

Im a bit partial to one Regiment {sm4}{sm4}

Otherwise, BRO, Second to none, 3 ID, 4ID, 1,2,3AD, 7th lightfigher, 10th Mountain (only unit that denied me!!! grrrrr) bloody bucket 28th, 29th, 1st Cav, all the Ranger bats, of course the SF teams/brigades.

Fan of the British Paras the older I get and start to understand their missions and mission capabilities.

Roman legions post Marian reforms through wars of Septimius Severus

Am growing a bit fond of the Naval submarine service- just took a tour of the USS Prowler a couple weekends ago- couldnt imagine being couped up like that all day.
