BATTLE OF MIDWAY---Roland Emmerich (INDEPENDENCE DAY) announced he is developing a World War II movie about the Battle of Midway which was the turning point of the war in the Pacific, “At the time, the Americans were the underdog. It was one of those moments where, against all odds, people came together and did the impossible. A lot of pilots died in this battle. I want to make a monument to them and it would be great to make a movie about it.”
In 2010, Bruce McKenna (BAND OF BROTHERS) and Warner Bros. announced a big budget, 3D movie about Midway which was cancelled.

Sounds good and with the way CGI has evolved nowadays it could potentially be a very realistic movie.

OK, but if turns out to be done like the last Pearl Harbour movie it is sure to be crap, got to say if the same bloke that made Independence Day is behind it I have low expectations.

Wayne.

I have a copy of an RG Smith print of the Battle of Midway. Depicts Dick Best's attack on the Atago. Spoke with the artist daughter and she had met the pilot at a reunion. He is, I believe, the only US pilot to hit two carriers in one day. Would love to see a good remake of the battle. Chris

I like the idea of a serious movie about the battle, historically accurate, with no added fictional crap, in the same way that Tora! Tora! Tora! was for Pearl Harbor. But that quote gives me pause. Emmerich needs to read more recent material about the battle, like Parshall & Tully's "Shattered Sword." The "Incredible Victory" model isn't quite what we once thought it was. Saying that doesn't take away from the bravery and heroism of the men who fought and died in the battle.

I just hope there's no Nisei girlfriend story, and they get the aircraft and ships right, if nothing else.

Prost!

Rather see the Battle of Leyete Gulf (1944). Downplayed, but both the best and worst moments in the entire history of the U.S. Navy. Bring the hankies.

That would be nice but let's face it, they're not going to make a movie about a battle 99% of today's audience never heard of before. Few probably know about Midway. :rolleyes2: Chris

I don't see it as an either/or. There's no reason someone couldn't make a movie about Leyte Gulf as well as about Midway. Someone send Tom Hanks a copy of "Last Stand of the Tin-Can Sailors."

Or World War II; I think they breeze over that now in high school history class in one day.

The theaters around here are putting in Iphone sections where those seated in that area will be allowed access to their Iphones, unlike now where they ask you to shut your phone off before the movie starts.

I guess these millenial yahoos can't go a @#$%ing hour or two without being glued to their phones..........

WEDNESDAY, JULY 4

MIDWAY---Luke Evans (THE HOBBIT) will play Commander Wade McCluskey, who was awarded the Navy Cross for leading the pivotal dive bomber attack on the Japanese carrier fleet at Midway, the turning point of the war in the Pacific Theater. Woody Harrelson will play Admiral Chester Nimitz, commander of the US Pacific Fleet in World War II. Roland Emmerich (INDEPENDENCE DAY) is the director.

Thanks for the link Chris, you might have opened up a can of worms for me! Very cool site and fantastic looking ships, subs, boats etc!

Tom

DOH! .. :p … of course. Must have had a senior moment …!

I have seen their work many times. Love their web page.

I have been thinking about having my dad's WWII ship, the USS Hoptree (AN-62) made.
The price is a bit steep, but the quality is top shelf … as seen by your USS Gambier Bay.

Nice addition to your collection.

Tom … ya' a big vat of worms. I have seen some of SD's work at a Model Ship club. They do beautiful stuff!!
I do build my own ships, but (unfortunately) can not come up to these guys standards.

If you should break down and buy 1 (or 17) please post them!

No worries Larry, will do although I face several challenges before I pull the plug such as "money" (the obvious first one), space and trying to decide which bloody ship or even ships to buy as they are all freaking awesome!!!
