Doug...never thought I would say it about the Lakers...

but I'm really glad to see them back at 500 after Sunday's win against New York...

with Nash returning after missing 24 games...and a modest 5 game winning streak...even though some of that streak was against some pretty weak opponents...Charlotte and Washington...a win is a win...

most recently beating Golden State and now the Knicks back to back...really gives me some hope that they may be gelling a little...

hoping to extend it to an 8 game run with Denver, Portland and Philly on the horizon...

they really look like they are playing with some confidence with Nash in the line-up...

Uuuuuuuuugh.........I'm hating this!!!

currently at 15-21...with a horrific 6 game losing streak...500 is a pipe dream...

this season is a nightmare...

there are already rumors to trade "Superman"...

with both Gasol and Howard out of their line-up...they are hard to watch...

The question now is: will they make the playoffs? Not with their present record but they have just faced 2 of the best NBA teams (something which they at the moment are not) on the road. Their record will probably improve with some easier games but will it be enough? If not, it will surely be catastrophe... A few things haveimproved in the last 2 matches, but of course that wouldn't be enough against a brilliant Kevin Durant (last match against OKC).
I bet we'll have an OKC vs. Miami final again, unless... Chicago get's in the way with a returning and healthy D. Rose...

Read a story today that stated in order for the Lakers to make the playoffs at this point, they'd need go roughly 31-12 the rest of the way just to get in as the 7th or 8th seed.

Wow.

What a disaster of a season, pretty amazing to see considering quite a few experts penciled them into the finals and also said they could go on a two or three year championship run.

Once again proving the game is played on the field/court/rink, not on paper.

I wonder what marketing genius pitched this idea:

The New Orleans Hornets will be known as the New Orleans Pelicans at the beginning of the 2013-14 NBA season.

Looks like the Kings will be moving to Seattle, so now they get a team back after theirs left.

if the season ended today...
and I know there is a long way to go...
the Lakers would be tied for the 7th seed...
with 14 games to go...
Gasol still out with injured foot and of course Kobe's out...
even with a season decimated with injuries...
I feel like they are starting to gel...
but I think any of the top 5 seeds with homecourt advantage would knock them out of the playoffs in short order...

There seems to be only one team capable of winning the title hands down and that is the Heat. LeBron is far away the best player in the League today. I'm not even sure anyone can give them serious competition.

I don't follow the NBA but I was interested to see just how bad the Wizards would end up being after their atrocious 4-28 start, far and away the worst record in the league. Well, they got John Wall back and they have actually been a decent team since that point. They have gone 19-14 since the disasterous start and are now only the 7th worst team in the NBA. Now that is progress. They can't break .500 with only 16 games left, but they can continue to be respectable and maybe play a spoiler role. -- Al

sorry...I made a mistake...

Lakers are still in the 8th spot...

1/2 game behind Houston...

The Lakers appear to be hitting their stride. But you don't often see a team struggle during the season and then suddenly hit a switch in the playoffs against the best teams. I would be surprised if they get by the first round. Particularly if they get matched with the #1 or 2 seed in the West which seems likely.

Very happy to see the Heat went down and will not break the Lakers 33-game winning streak. Some records just shouldn't be broken. It's makes for endless babble on ESPN, but West, Chamberlain, Goodrich and company shouldn't be replaced.

Considering how much better players are nowadays, I would argue that their 27 game win streak is at least as impressive, if not more so. I think even West was hoping it would be broken.

In the end it will probably prove beneficial to the Heat as they can now focus on winning the title, instead of worrying about the streak, something that probably affected the Patriots adversely several years ago.

I would be extremely surprised if the Heat get taken to a seventh game in any series they play in the playoffs.

Gee, what a shame, I was pulling for the Heat to get that record, they're such a likeable team.................:rolleyes2:

What are the boobs at ESPN going to talk about now, they should rename that station HEAT, good God all they do is ballwash the Heat 24/7/365.

Great; they're going to go on one of those Celtics/Bulls/Lakers runs now and win 4, 5, 6 championships in a row.

Awesome; that's pretty easy to do when you collude and get the best players to come play for your team, just like the Penguins in the NHL are doing now.

They got Iginla last night for a bag of pucks; nah, nothing suspicious going on there..........:rolleyes2:

LeBron has a history of underachiving teams. Last year was the only exception in his entire career. Streak or no streak the pressure will be on the Heat from beginning to end since everyone expects them to sweep through the playoffs. Maybe they are just too good to fold. Maybe not. I don't see a lot of great teams to challenge them. Certainly none in the East. Maybe OK City out West. The trick will be to make them win close games in the clutch and not just blowout teams.

LeBron has always been a very good player, he could never get over the hump and always found ways to lose in painful fashion; that all changed in game 6 of the Eastern Conference Finals last year vs the Celtics.

After losing game 5 at home and going to Boston down 3-2, Lebron put the Heat on his back and practically won that game by himself, the Celtics of the 1980's would have ran the Heat out of the building, Pierce and company blew it, the Heat went on to win the championship and are now ready to go on one of those runs...........

I don't see anyone in the East that can stop them. Not because Miami is unstoppable, but because of the mediocre competition. The Knicks have the second best record in the east! There are 5 teams - count them - in the west with a higher win percentage than the Knicks. I can't recall seeing the Knicks late in the playoffs since OJ took his ride in the white bronco. The only challenge might be in the finals from OK City or San Antonio, but I don't hold out much hope for the Spurs who have their own track record of playoff let downs. Hope springs enternal though. OK City is a dangerous team.

Kobe is done for the year and maybe next. The Lakers are a real mess under dunderhead Jim Buss. Playing Kobe 40+ minutes at his age can't be excused. Heads should roll starting with the coach. The only upside is that this now becomes Dwight Howard's team. Maybe he can get his head together and start playing up to his potential. But they are toast this year.

with Kobe out...
Nash on the bench...
MWP playing limited minutes after his knee surgery...
their last 2 games against San Antonio and Houston...
coupled with Utah's remaining schedule...
and with them holding the tie breaker if they finish with identical records...

I doubt they will make the playoffs now...

what a shame...Durant from OKC even said they would be the toughest 8th seed in the history of the playoffs...

I never thought they were going to go far in the playoffs...I just wanted to see them make the playoffs...

too bad they're not in the East...^&grin...they could have been the 6th or 7th seed there...

the Lakers are Howards to lead...and he can't even make a free throw...{sm5}

The Lakers are a real mess under dunderhead Jim Buss. QUOTE]

yea...Jim is no prize...his father is probably rolling over in his grave with his development of the Lakers since his demise...

did you know that he was a drop out at USC and even went to jockey school to further his passion for horses...

the guy is 6'2"s tall...^&grin...for real...

jockey school...6 foot 2 inches tall...hahahaha...that's just too funny...

The Lakers made the cut with Utah's loss tonight! They can finish 7th in the West with a win. Much better for them to get the Spurs than OK City.
