Saw that Merlin Olsen just passed away. One of the fearsome foursome of the LA Rams back in the late 60's and 70's. A great player and seemingly a very nice guy.

But for some reason, Little House on the Prarie and Father Murphy are the first things that come to mind. (That and his TV ads for flowers.)

He was also a great sports announcer. All around nice guy of the type they don't make anymore in our celebrity sports culture. He played in 198 straight NFL games during a time when they played only 14 games per season!.

Great picture. Always remembered him as #74 with his other teammates in their games against my Colts. They always seemed to be huge games. He was a great one. -- lancer

NFL comes up with a new playoff OT. A much needed change but it sounds a bit weird - I still prefer the college football OT:

The NFL passed a form of modified sudden death overtime today at the league meetings in Orlando.

Owners passed the vote by a count of 28-4. The changes will apply only to the postseason, though the league may reconsider adapting them for the 2010 regular season in May.

The modified sudden death rule means both teams get opportunities for possessions in overtime (fumbling away a kickoff would count as an opportunity) -- if the first possession doesn't end in a touchdown, offensive or defensive. The sudden death format would resume thereafter.
