Hi

great news - at long last Airfix are releasing 9 x sets of their superb WW2 figures in 2009.
I expect the price to be reasonable which is good news for collectors and figure painters and wargamers.
list as below:
Figures 1:32 Scale **

A02701 - British Paratroops
A02702 - German Infantry
A02703 - U.S Infantry
A02705 - British Commandos
A02707 - British 8th Army
A02708 - Afrika Korps
A02711 - U.S Paratroops
A02712 - German Paratroops
A02718 - British Infantry**

I dont know how they will be sold - boxed in 14, 28 as done in the past??

hurrahh - no more having to buy 2nd hand with broken rifle tips etc...

Maybe they will also re-release more sets if this lot prooves popular

That's great news! Look forward to the release. I thought CTS had aquired the molds for these. Is it a joint venture do you know?

Simon

hi

I suspect that the moulds are back in the UK as they were in France until last year when Airfix was bought by Hornby Trains who are in the gradual process of revamping the iconic Airfix brand ( and doing a good job of it).

I understand that the French factory (Heller) did supply CTS.

There was a programme on British TV last year about Airfix. Hornby brought some ex- Airfix employee gentleman out of retirement to oversee the shipping of all the moulds/ tooling back to Britain because of his encylopedic knowledge about these items.

Cool.

I hope they get the marketing strategy right for these. If the price is right, the advertising good, and the retail outlets varied and accessible enough, I could see this being one of the most major steps in getting young blood in to toy soldiers for the past 2+ decades, at least in the UK.

I know what my kids, nephew, friends kids etc will be getting for birthdays from no on in. :D

Hi Simon

yes good news - at last hopefully some decent and affordable figures that young collectors can start the hobby - one day all of us older Johnnies will be past it and our shaky hands wont be able to hold a brush steady!

I would like to see totally new 1/32nd soldiers made by Airfix as they are usually good quality - proper 1/32nd scale and inexpensive. Maybe a new range of Waterloo figures or American Civil War - would be great if their original sculpter Ron Cameron can make some fresh figures.

My 3 sons will get a box each to start with to go alongside the play station and wii as they cant play these games all the time!

Dave

I guess they'll wait and see on the popularity of these sets before committing to fresh sculpts. That said, they've been out of production under the Airfix banner for long enough that the figures will be fresh to a lot of youngsters (Jeez, I sound like my Dad!), and perhaps nostalgic enough for parents to get their kids some.

I'd also see some scope in re-releasing the 4 Napoleonic sets for mass set ups, wargaming and so on.

Can't believe I'm getting excited by the release of soldiers I've already got dozens of boxes of!

I feel the same way about about Airfix releasing their figures. I have most of the early sets painted and I still buy the figures when I find them. Something about hanging on to my Airfix figures. Guess it is because they were the figures I learned to paint on and I still have the first figures my kids and grandson painted in my cabinet. I regret selling all my early 1/72 figure sets but I hope they keep multipose figures on the market. I use them for other embellishments like adding weapons to FOV figures which improved the look. Keep them coming Airfix.:) Leadmen

I agree John. Those early multipose sets have incredible detail on them, considering they must be a 34 year old design. I think it stands as a testiment to the quality that things like the weapons and equipment are still being used by sculpters for new figures.

Hi

the multipose ww2 will be available too in new packaging with a scenic base for display

enjoy

Hi
you are correct about the nostalgia of these 1/32nd ww2 Airfix figures - I remember playing on the carpet with a large cardboard box of them when I was about 5 years old at my Aunties house in Manchester - they were her sons and I was always allowed to play with them to keep me quiet probably!
Later they were amongst the first types that I had a crack at painting - with my mums nail varnish !!!
Regards and happy collecting

I'm hoping that the Multipose series will be continued. Wouldn't it be great if the Multipose series cound be expanded?

One could also hope that Hornby may be able to find or repair the long gone molds for the 1/32nd scale 17-pounder AT gun! This was a good model and about the only decent model of the 17-pounder on towed carriage.

I wish Hornby good fortune with the Airfix line.

I think I had almost all of those figures back in the 1970's. It will be good to see them back. I also hope for the WWII Australians and Gurkhas.

I've got loads of this figures still up in my dad loft:)

Hi - I reckon that the moulds for the 17 pounder are still with Airfix - I got the clear impression that nothing has been thrown away or scrapped - if you visit the Aifix website you can ask them a question about this model. They are very helpful with a customer service sectuion.

It's good the figures will be available again. In many ways they are the definitive plastic toy soldiers.

What I'd really love to see is a soft plastic WW2 US halftrack to compliment their excellent German one. I'm sure it'd sell like hotcakes. I even wrote to Airfix a couple of years ago to suggest it - they wrote back too! - sadly with the 'no plans' line. I've always thought that a German Stug would also be perfect for their range.

Yes, It seemed CTS had all the figures produced by Airfix (or Heller) for them.
I'm glad Airfix will massmarket them (where CTS is more aimed at collectors only) so that's very good news.

It would be great if they would release the waterloo sets as well, perhaps in less flashy colors.

There will also be a new 1/72 WWI diorama set, probably again with scenic base like the D-Day and Waterloo set.

I still regard Airfix as the Benchmark for Plastics.
im hopeing they will make the old Napoleonics kits again (the ones like historex) :)

Yes, very lively realistic poses with plenty of detail. The hard and soft waterloo figures are the best imho.
There was a thread on one of the Airfix forums that the hard plastic single pieces were going to be reissued this year but that turns out to be incorrect. They got it from one of the Airfix employees. Where there is smoke, there is often a fire. We might see them soon, maybe next year?

Those were nice figures, too. Many, many years ago I built and painted an Airfix George Washington and two Rev. War American infantry and put them on a plaque for my Dad's office. Those were fun figures to build and paint!
