Complete rubbish. It starts weird carries on weird and ends... thankfully! Mind a range of accurate figures will shortly be released from this film.

I got around to watching Stalingrad this weekend. My major complaint of the film was not the subtitles as I have heard others mention. I watch foreign films and that isn’t a distraction for me. What was a major distraction in the US distribution of this film was the voice dubbing of English over the Russian characters. Absolutely horrific! Whoever came up with that idea should be fired. I ended up watching the film on sound level 1 on my TV where I couldn’t understand what was being said and with all of the subtitles turned on. It was almost like watching a silent film. Here is another thing I found odd about their poor choice of using voice overs. The German characters still used the German with English subtitles and no English voice overs. Just bizarre! Why would you dub over the Russian language and not the German too? At least I got to turn up the volume when it was only German characters on the screen and get a glimpse of what the film would have been like without voice overs. Also, when I did listen to the English being spoken with the subtitles turned ON before I cut the volume down, the spoken English didn’t match the subtitles either. What an editing disaster.

If all English voice overs were done away with and the English subtitles were corrected, it would drastically improve the film. About half of the action scenes were pretty good, minus the ones where they borrowed from the Asian slow-mo action flick genre and really over used that method of filming. The other action scenes were over the top bordering on ridiculous. I thought the dialogue was pretty simplistic, but again, I can’t speak German or Russian so maybe the translation was really simplified or something. I did really like the sets. The best part of the film.

I haven’t been much of a fan of Russian films. The 9th Company wasn’t that good in my opinion and I thought I needed my head examined after watching Come and See. Maybe I am just watching the wrong Russian films…………………….

I hope the above review helps those considering watching this film understand what the issues are going in. Lower expectations are best for this piece of work.
