I did look at my favorite book on Tiger Tanks " Tiger I on the Western Front" by Jean Restayn and did not see #125 on any of the 28 pages covering Abt 501. Restayn makes the comment that "period photographs show clearly that there was no red inside the figures. This is only applicable when the Tigers later went over to the 10th PanzerDivision, with red numbers in the 700 and 800 series."
Can someone confirm this observation?
And which Tiger tank book has a picture of #125?
Sorry to come into this thread 6 years late, but a lot of research has been happening inside WWW.TIIF.DE and we can answer all of these questions now.
There was never a 125 in the 501 in Tunisia.
The numbers were empty white outlines for the first company, and filled with red for the second company.
When the Tigers were folded into 10th Pz.Div., the 2nd company changed their leading digits from 2 to 8, but no other changes were made.
The palm-tree was never painted on the Tigers in any photo that we have seen.
After the Tiger force was halved by the disaster at Hunt's Gap, the tanks were renumbered into the 700 series, using red digits.
