NFL 2015 Season (2 Viewers)

I'm totally lost on this...

this needs to be revised and set in stone for every referee...

it's so ambiguous and open to the interpretation of every referee...

congrats on the close one...that was a squeaker...

hate to hear about Edelman...

next men up...

I don't get the whole "make a football move" concept; what's that, throwing your hands in the air looking for a flag afterward, is that considered a football move?

The Beckham catch in the end zone looked like a TD to me, caught it, two feet down, touchdown, ballgame.

Nope, it was ruled incomplete.

And Ed Hockulie's (I know I butchered that name) crew is just awful, they throw 900 flags a game. On one of the giants drives, they threw a flag on practically every third down to keep the drive going, it was unbelievable.

agreed...

in the end zone...a 2 handed catch...2 feet on the ground...what more do you want...

by the same token...

if the ball barely crosses the goal line...for a fraction of a second...just barely...and is then dislodged to a fumble...that's a TD...

so which is it?

the rules make no sense to me...

when I think it's not a TD...the review changes the call...

when I think it's a TD...the review changes the call...

I just don't understand it...

I don't understand it either, for the same reasons Mike doesn't. I've seen other refs rule it a catch because you only have to have the ball for a split second, or so I thought.

All of this catch, not a catch stuff started back in the 70's because of an incident in a Cardinals/Redskins game. The Redskins lost the game on a controversial Td pass call where the Cardinal receiver, in the end zone, jumped to catch the pass, had the ball in his hands for a heartbeat, without his feet ever touching the ground, before the ball was knocked from his hands. The pass was ruled a Td because he had it in his hands for a second, technically in the end zone (actually, over the end zone, as his feet never touched). This call caused a huge controversy which started the whole what is a catch, what is not a catch rule changes that keep getting fine tuned to the point today that none of it makes much sense. The NFL rule book is out of control as they have tried to cover every little contingency but have instead ended up with a blizzard of flags each game as the refs attempt to enforce a bunch of rules that are open to personal interpretation. All this is bringing the game flow to a grinding halt and making the games all but impossible to enjoy. -- Al

I could be wrong -- and probably am -- but I thought this catch/no catch "stuff" arose out of a Steelers Oilers playoff game.

You could well be correct as far as rule changes. My memory of the Redskin incident is that it caused a huge uproar but I am unsure if any rule changes game about right away. Could have been just another straw on the camel's back. It was a long time ago and it just sticks out in my memory without taking into account everything that time and distance do to memory. :wink2: -- Al

That was the Renfro catch in the end zone that was clearly a catch and was ruled not so; all it did was hand Pittsburg another trip to the Super Bowl, no big screw up there or anything.

Understood about the human element and everything, but game after game, week after week, season after season, these highly paid part time stooges continually blow calls.........................

George,

I agree with you on every point. First of all, four the 4th time this season, the Giants lost a game in the last minute because of Coughlin's abysmal clock management. As you said, run the ball three times at the 5 yard line, if you don't score a touchdown, there is around 50 seconds left when you kick the go ahead field goal.

Second, I have no clue what a catch is under the present rules, and you are absolutely right, the only football move I see any wide receiver make anymore is to throw his hands up and ask for the flag.

Third, the officiating on pass interference is beyond ridiculous. The Giants were the beneficiaries of at least 3 calls that should not have been made.

Finally, as to the mediocrity of the league, the Giants are the best example. They are leading their division, the traditionally tough NFC East, with a 5-5 record (the definition of mediocre), and are, really half a team. Their offense and offensive special teams are very good, their defense and defensive special teams are the worst I have ever seen fielded by the organization in my lifetime (although the defense pleasantly surprised me yesterday, I was sure that the Giants wouldn't stop the Patriots even once all day, the defensive special teams remain a joke).

George, congrats on your Patriots. After the B.S. you had to deal with in the off season, they deserve to be kicking the crap out of the competition. I rarely say this after a loss (as I recall the last time was the last Giants loss to the Patriots in 2007) but the way the Giants played yesterday, despite losing, gives me hope they might make the playoffs and be able to go on a run in this watered down league.

Great posts all around regarding yesterday's games.

I tried to watch the Seahawks versus the Cardinals in its entirety. I just couldn't do it. Every other pass play included a call for pass interference. I could have cared less who won, I just wanted to watch a good game. Too many flags made that endeavor impossible.

Louis,
As usual, you're on point with all of your comments.

As far as mediocrity; at this point, 10 of the 32 teams have a plus 500 record, roughly 1/3rd of the teams.

One team is at 500, the rest are under 500.

At this point, there are four very good teams, eight good teams, eight mediocre teams and twelve complete dumpster fires of teams.

The league is a watered down farce of it's former self, a complete and utter joke.

When Brady and eventually Belichick retire and the Patriots once again fade into mediocrity, I'm done with the NFL.

Just like I am currently done with the NBA.

It's no longer a sport; it's a league full of thugs and caters to fantasy football.........................

Hi Louis, I feel your pain, but try losing 7 games in the last drive of a game
:mad::mad::mad: as my Ravens have now figured out how to lose in every conceivable way, whether they have the ball on the last drive or the Raven defense is on the field for the last drive they have lost unbelievable 7 games!!!! with 7 games left still to play!! after this season is over someone will write a book on how the 2015 Ravens were the most unlucky, snake bit, "ball bounced the other way team" or just plain not very good at finishing a game, but on the bright side I can kind of follow along with the NFL season stress free as my team is fighting for draft picks and no need to worry if they won/lost, playoff seeds etc...Sammy

Just how snake-bitten are the Ravens? They lost on a 53 yd FG on an untimed down after a Raven's defender tackled the Jacksonville Qb by the facemask with no time left. The 15 yd penalty put Jax in FG range for the win. Ravens have now lost 7 games by a total of 33 points. Even their 2 wins were by 3 points each. No use doing things the easy way.:rolleyes2: -- Al
Sammy, the game went as a loss by the Ravens, but once again it was the terrible refs that cost them the game. On the last play, the offensive line wasn't set for the requisite amount of time and should have been whistled for it, resulting in a 5-yard penalty and 10 second run-off equaling game over, Ravens win. How often is the NFL going to keep admitting mistakes were made but nothing can be or will be done? It has reached the level of high tragedy. -- Al

Hmm...have I mentioned the FIRST PLACE Vikings? What in the world is happening in Green Bay, going from undefeated to falling apart in a few short weeks (Denver is joining them in that collapse)? Here's to hoping their collapse lasts one more week...

SKOL!

It took close to 40 years, but the Vikings finally got their revenge on the Raiders for that *** kicking in the 1977 Super Bowl, the one the Patriots should have played in if Ben Dreith didn't screw them with one of the worst calls in playoff history.....................

Cinncy bites the dust and the Texans add their name to the line-up of teams with a 4-5 record, and have tied the Colts for 1st place. The NFL must be so proud. :rolleyes2: -- Al

After watching parts of that game, someone needs to explain to me how the Bungles are undefeated.

Oh yeah; they're not as they fall to the mighty Texans, 10-6.

Patriots now with the #1 seed in the AFC; take care of business the rest of the way and you've got two games at home.................

After the game, J J watt was so pleased they are now in first place! While true, you have a losing record buddy! He may be happy, but I'm sure the owner and coaches aren't thrilled

The goal is to get into the playoffs; there are no style points in football. Let's not forget that a few years ago, the Seahawks got in with a losing record and as division winners, they got to host the Saints, and beat them. As they used to say at Lotto, "you got to be in it to win it."

Brad...

that is so true...

with a "win or go home" format in the playoffs...

as long as you get there...

a team with any record can win in the playoffs...
