It's almost that time again! It seems like the season just ended with the mighty Kings taking the Cup. Some of those guys played 120 games last year counting the olympics. Incredible. The Chicago-LA series last season was as good as it gets. And the Kings winning three games sevens on the road can't be topped. The greatest playoff run in history. But onward...

Went to an AHL game last night. Paid $12 and sat in the front row. There were 220 penalty minutes. A dozen fights. Doesn't get any better than that. The speed and violence of the game is incredible. You can't get a sense of it on TV.

Hoisting the Cup before the opening game seems like a curse. And making San Jose - the team that was up 3-0 games on the Kings last year before losing four in a row - wait around and watch is not a great idea. The Kings got destroyed.

Kings get outshot 80-40 against the Blues and Wild and win both games. Quick gives up one goal on 80 plus shots including OT and a shootout.

You non Blues fans might want to keep an eye on Vladamir Terasenko of the Blue Note. This guy scored a #1 goal on the highlight reel last night. He has superstar written all over him.

Gary:

I saw that goal. He pretty much went through the entire team all by himself and then scored.

Amazing.

Did someone mention the NHL? Time to get this thread up now that college football is done. Biggest surprise so far are the Nashville Predators. Best team in hockey coming off a terrible season. Most of the Canadian teams are improved this year with the exception of Edmonton. Boston is showing some life. My Kings are in their typical regular season rut. Likely finish somewhere between 5-8 in the west but hopefully pick it up in the playoffs.

What about the Islanders. Don't you think they're a big surprise?

Both NY teams are playing great. I think the Rangers came through California recently and beat the kings, ducks, and sharks. Three very good teams. How does a New Yorker decide if they are a rangers or islanders fan?

If you were born on Long Island, you're probably an Islander fan although there are exceptions; Boomer Esiason is from LI but is a Rangers fan. New Yorkers (NYC) are probably Rangers fans. NJ is probably Devil country but not universally.

As much as I like hockey (NHL), other than the skills competition, and the introduction of the all star players just prior to the game itself. That,s my viewing of it. I couldn,t watch 5 minutes of the game itself. In fact I shouldn't even call it a game.

My Kings are now 2-12 in OT games. The worst in the NHL. The are 0-22 in their last shootout attempts and currently out of the playoff bracket after a seven game homestand that saw them win one game. They have had a bit of every type of bad luck. Injuries, suspensions, one guy has mono. Tough year. Sutter needs to hit the reset button or make a trade like he did last year at this point to get on track.

Can,t feel sorry for the Kings, they absolutely kill the Blues. Speaking of which, we are on quite a roll!
Now that Nashvilles all star goalie will ,be out for a while and Chicago is in a funk time to make some hay!

Don't worry, there's still plenty of time to grab that 8th seed and then win three series 4-3 after being down in all of them 0-3 on their way to another cup for hockey crazy LA.

Love the crowd shots at the finals of all the Hollywood has beens in the stands and morons like Justin Beeber and Kati Perry who found out about hockey ten minutes before the game started; speaking of which, she'll be flapping around at halftime of the Super Bowl.........

George, looks like you are getting next years Winter Classic vs your favorite team Montreal.
They are playing in some 60000 seat stadium (can,t think of the name).
Finally at this years Winter Classic they were interviewing one of the players and asked him the same question they ask at every Winter Classic, "Does this playing outside remind you of when you were a kid playing hockey" He responded not really we always played indoors at rinks.
So true, unless you are Gordie Howes age all the kids now play indoors!

Yep, we get the Habs at Gillette Stadium, which holds about 68,000 fans; not sure how they are going to pull this off as the Patriots will still be playing at that point, plus factor in making the playoffs and having home games. Watching hockey there from the nosebleed seats is going to be just awful, don't get this one at all.

Not to mention without snow on the ground, those outdoor rinks look idiotic; would be better if it was snowing during the game like in Buffalo for the first one, that was awesome.

Pond hockey is a dying activity, which is really sad. We've got one near my house and I've skated on it in the past, nobody uses it, have the whole place to myself....

I'd feel bad except for last year. Didn't they win the Cup as the 150th seed?

I love how the hockey playoff system is set up; I remember one year there were 24 teams in the league and 16 made the playoffs, so you essentially played 82 games to eliminate 8 teams, then the first round of the playoffs was 5 games, so you played another 5 to eliminate 8 more teams.

What a clown show.

The current system of divisions within both conferences playing each other is a bigger clown show, just idiotic on a number of levels.

One of the more entertaining games on NBC sports tonight going on between the Pens and Flyers. The fists are really flying old school style. Two teams that really hate each other.
