Things are starting to get interesting. Chicago has lost Patrick Kane for the rest of the season and maybe into the playoffs. They weren't playing too well to begin with. Several teams in contention for the final spot out west. The Kings are playing tonight to tie a franchise record for most consecutive wins. They also made a deal to bring in some help on defense. My fear is they go into a funk the last week of the season and with the musical chairs going on for those last playoff slots they might get burned.

I am waiting to see what the Sharks due at the trade deadline, so far rebuilding on the fly has not worked.

With Minnesota playing as well as anyone and shooting up the standings that leaves only one playoff spot for LA, San Jose and Calgary. All good teams, but two of them may not make it. It's going to come down to the last day and every point is critical. The Kings have been riding Quick. They have only scored 3 goals in the last 3 games but won two of those.

St Louis beat Winnipeg last night in a shootout, but Wiinnipeg looked good. Don,t count them out.

The Rangers and Blackhawks were aggressive before the trade deadline. Basically putting all their chips on a cup run this year and dealing draft picks. Arizona made out like a bandit picking up a ton of draft picks. I can't understand Calgary dealing some players while still in the hunt. They basically waived the white flag for this season. At this point, Winnipeg and Minnesota are playing well out west. There are going to be tough draws for the top teams in the west during the first round. I still like the Caps in the East. Ovi is on fire. They are going to be tough but have long track record of playoff chokes to overcome.

The teams at the bottom of the western conference standings are really on a hot streak. Calgary, Minnesota, and Winnipeg are playing as well as anyone. The defending Stanley Cup Kings have a better record than they did at this time last year and won't even make the playoffs unless they catch one of these teams. If the playoffs started today, Minnesota might be the team to beat in the west. St. Louis is playing well, too. In the east, the Rangers are looking good. The Caps seem to have dropped off.

It's about 40-60 now that the Kings make the playoffs. An incredible run by the teams at the bottom of the western conference over the last month. No one can beat Minnesota, Calgary, Winnipeg or Vancouver. Those teams are playing as well or better than the top teams in the west. The Kings have called up their $5 million man from the AHL Mike Richards who was sent down months ago due to his poor play, but have a tough road schedule to make up ground. They are not alone, however, with San Jose, Colorado, and Dallas all looking to miss the playoffs. The Sharks are going to clean house after the season which they probably should have done last year after being up 3-0 and losing the series to LA.

The Sharks just need to get rid of Doug Wilson.

I have a DVD set of old Blues games from 67 until the 80,s. These are not just highlites but game footage.
My point is I would bet half those players could not play in the current NHL. They look like they are skateing in mud. Back then if a guy was 6 ft. he was a giant. There equipment is so much smaller and their uniforms fit so tight, all this makes them look even smaller.
Then we come to the goalies, my gawd how could they stop anything with their flopping style, not to mention no mask. If they would play in todays game outfitted as they were in the 60,s we would have some KIA,s in the league.
In the late 60,s, the Blues first few years going to the old Arena everyone would be dressed to the "9",s. It was THE place to be.
As Blues color announcer Gus Kyle would say about the game "It,s a real barn burner" Ole time hockey, eh!

He is toast. It's a tough nut in the west this year though. Calgary, Winnipeg and Minnesota all win again last night. No way to make up any ground against those teams over the last two months. The Kings may end up with a better record than last season when they won the Cup but be left out of the playoffs. They get the Rangers tonight. That should be a good game. Quick has to be tired since he has started just about every game over the last two months and played last night. He is carrying this team.

Those guys were tough as nails. Hockey is still a brutal sport but I can't imagine playing with no helmet or face mask and catching a puck right between the eyes. It's interesting to see old clips from just about any sport. I don't think the fans ever wore jerseys until about a decade ago. That seems to be a recent and no doubt profitable change for the owners. I've seen lines of people waiting to put down $200+ at a game for a regular jersey just off the boat from China where it probably cost about $10 to make. They charged me $70 to put a name on a jersey I bought for my daughter.

The Kings went through NYC like Sherman through the South. Wins over the Devils, Rangers and Islanders. But didn't make up much ground since Calgary and Winnipeg never lose. I'm starting to get paranoid that teams already in the playoffs are rolling over for these teams because they don't want LA in playoffs. If you have never listened to hockey on the radio, it is a real hoot. There are no bigger homers than hockey commentators. Half the time they are smashed and they always complain endlessly about the officials. Very funny.

I think the Shark's announcer, Randy Hahn, was arrested for possession of methamphetamine a while back in the middle of one of the seasons.

The season is finally coming to an end and my Kings are in deep doo doo. They have to win out the last two games including tonight on the road. And then get some help. A combination of a horrible OT/SO record and the top teams in the west rolling over to Calgary and Winnipeg for the last two month might keep them out of the playoffs. I wonder if anyone has calculated the number of games the Ducks, Blues and Preds have dropped to Minnesota, Calgary, and Winnipeg down the stretch and compared that to their overall season winning percentage? It must be quite an amazing statistical anomaly.

I hope you won't take offense if I say that I wouldn't mind the Kings missing the playoffs, considering how they've handled the Rangers :wink2:

I think the Ducks, Blues and Preds share that sentiment in the west based on the effort they gave against the teams competing with the Kings for that final spot. The Kings could finish this year with more points than they did when they won the Cup and not even make the playoffs because of the run the lower tier teams have made. I know I'm biased, but I would really love for someone to run the numbers over the last couple months of the season and see how well teams like Calgary, Winnipeg and Minnesota did against the top teams. It sure seemed like they rarely lost to teams that otherwise had amazing records. It has to be off the charts to be so dominate in those games. The Kings certainly had their chances to help themselves, but it was an uphill battle. They get a shot at Calgary tonight, and then Calgary and Winnipeg play in the final game. So it might be a wild finish.

For those fixated by the Kings playoff situation or the NHL's mind numbing playoff scenarios complete with its OT contingencies here is how things shake out (note there will be a test after reading this):

"Winnipeg can claim either wild card berth, Calgary can claim the #2 or #3 Pacific Division seeds or either wild card berth, and Los Angeles can claim the #3 Pacific Division seed or a wild card berth. The Kings would hold the tiebreaker against the Jets should the teams finish tied in points but would not hold the tiebreaker against the Flames.

Should Colorado defeat Winnipeg in regulation and Los Angeles defeat Calgary in regulation, the Kings will make the playoffs if they beat San Jose, regardless of the outcome of the Flames-Jets game on Saturday.

That’s a pretty significant “if,” considering Colorado is 10 points behind Winnipeg and has already been eliminated. But, as we saw in tonight’s Edmonton win, no result is a given.

Another clinching scenario includes the Kings beating Calgary in regulation and San Jose, and the Jets beating the Flames in any fashion on Saturday afternoon. However, should Winnipeg beat Colorado on Thursday, they’ll already have clinched a playoff spot and would have little to play for, with Calgary needing a win at Winnipeg to get in. That’s not the most appealing scenario for Kings fans.

Should Los Angeles lose in overtime or a shootout in Calgary, they’d need to beat San Jose and hope that Winnipeg loses to both Colorado and Calgary in regulation."

I don't even try to figure out in my mind the different playoff scenerios. I just wait until the dust clears, season over. I take it from there.
Besides every team in the West can beat each other as they are almost all equal.

Unless there is a miracle over the weekend, the Bruins are out of the playoffs one year from having the best record in hockey, two years from a epic SC final vs the Blackhawks.

IMO, they haven't recovered from losing to Montreal in the second round last year after being up 3-2.

As has been the case around here since Christ was in a crib, it's always about Montreal, they are truly the bane of a Bruins fans existence, just a monumentally annoying franchise to have to bang heads with every year.

So frustrating............................it's on to baseball for me......................

Gary:

The dust has settled on San Jose. I hope they clean house and start from scratch.
