The rugged wilderness on the border of Colonial New York state and Quebec October 1759

DSC06811.jpg

Through this virgin wilderness Major Robert Rogers & his 140 Rangers were retreating following their dashing raid that had utterly destoyed the Indian settlement at St Francis.
In hot pursuit were the French-under the command of Captain Jean-Daniel Dumas- and a large war-party of the ferocious Abenaki Indians

After eight days with rations exhausted and his men surviving on a diet of mushrooms and beech leaves with still more than 150 miles to reach Fort No 4 on the east bank of the Connecticut river Rogers made a fateful decision.
He split his force up into small companies of 10-20 men in the hope that smaller groups would stand a better chance of bagging game than one large body.
The groups separated north of Lake Memphremagog and planned to rendezvous on the Connecticut river 60 miles above Fort No 4.

Somewhere southeast of Lake Memphremagog painted figures move swiftly and silently through the forest in an attempt to get ahead of one of the small Ranger groups

DSC06831.jpg

They are a large war-band of Abenaki's and they know this terrain well being the routes they used to attack British settlements

DSC06840.jpg

They are intent on destroying every single participant of the raiding party led by the man they call Wabo Madahondo-"The White Devil"

DSC06843.jpg

Coming to a clearing in the forest and now some way in front of the unsuspecting Ranger group they position themselves and prepare an ambush

DSC06849.jpg

Silently blending into the forest fauna, they listen, hearing voices and bracken being cut- the white devil's spawn were approaching the clearing.

Great scenes UK. Now, the F/I war. What a treat. Leadmen

Nice one Bob. I'm glad you didn't get too much of a break. Likewise, looking forward to more. :)

Excellent work, looking forward to seeing this one develop.

I see you received the small patch of land I dug up for you :D LOL

Bob

You have started us all on a journey of unequaled magnitude, scope and historical interest. Bob,

Wow! What a very pleasant surprise this is :)……..can’t wait for the next instalment.

Many thanks for taking the time.

Very professional job with the diorama. Looks very well done.

Yippee.....
This one promises to be as good, if not better, than the Carnage in the Cornfields.
Keep it up Bob. Its far better than the telly.

Cheers

As the Rangers entered the forest clearing an Abenaki sub-chief let out one single but blood curdling war-cry

DSC06967.jpg

Instantly the dark forest's tree-line was alive with vividly painted warrriors

DSC07084.jpg

Moving swiftly the lithe warriors whooping and screaming swooped down on the front Ranger echelon intent on destroying them all

DSC07078.jpg

Mkazwai-mahican (Black Wolf) was implacable in his determination and incapable of extending any mercy towards "the white devils" who had massacred his village at the mouth of the St Francis river.

DSC07006.jpg

Lt Avery of Fitches Connecticut Regiment yelled to his fellow rangers
"Ambush! To arms!"
Whilst immediately taking out one of the painted hostiles to his front

DSC06983.jpg

But for one poor ranger Avery's warning shout came too late

DSC07098.jpg

One-eyed Cyrus Dunbar was the first to join Avery, devoid of any fire-arms having lost them during the flight from St Francis, he grappled for his trusty axe to assist his commander.

DSC06991.jpg

As more hostiles poured out from the woods and with the majority of his rangers not yet in the clearing, Avery quickly realised that if the savages got behind them- he and his few men would be cut off.
The fight for survival was on!

Very nice work indeed Reb,these really are excellant scenes and your commentary brings them alive.I look forward to seeing if any of the rangers make it out alive!.

Rob

Very nice Reb, I really like the trees, special in a close shot picture we can see the details. Did you built then?

Cheers

Thanks for the comments guys- change of era for me but gotta let Lee get back to old Virginny before he meets Grant!

Hi Rod,
Yeah trees built by yours truly- due to cost more than anything else- I dont know about Stateside/Canada but good 54/60mm scale model trees cost literally an arm and a leg here in the UK and consequently way out of my price league.

Another great thread Reb, certainly looks like it will be one to rival your ACW thread.

I don't think model trees are any cheaper here either (not good ones anyway)

Hi Reb,

Bravo! What a wonderful encore to your ACW series! Your work continues to be incredibly impressive. Thank you for sharing it!

Warmest personal regards,

Pat :)
