The rugged wilderness on the border of Colonial New York state and Quebec October 1759
Through this virgin wilderness Major Robert Rogers & his 140 Rangers were retreating following their dashing raid that had utterly destoyed the Indian settlement at St Francis.
In hot pursuit were the French-under the command of Captain Jean-Daniel Dumas- and a large war-party of the ferocious Abenaki Indians
After eight days with rations exhausted and his men surviving on a diet of mushrooms and beech leaves with still more than 150 miles to reach Fort No 4 on the east bank of the Connecticut river Rogers made a fateful decision.
He split his force up into small companies of 10-20 men in the hope that smaller groups would stand a better chance of bagging game than one large body.
The groups separated north of Lake Memphremagog and planned to rendezvous on the Connecticut river 60 miles above Fort No 4.
Somewhere southeast of Lake Memphremagog painted figures move swiftly and silently through the forest in an attempt to get ahead of one of the small Ranger groups
They are a large war-band of Abenaki's and they know this terrain well being the routes they used to attack British settlements
They are intent on destroying every single participant of the raiding party led by the man they call Wabo Madahondo-"The White Devil"
Coming to a clearing in the forest and now some way in front of the unsuspecting Ranger group they position themselves and prepare an ambush
Silently blending into the forest fauna, they listen, hearing voices and bracken being cut- the white devil's spawn were approaching the clearing.
