SS098; Fedor Von Bock was a German Field marshal and Knights Cross recipient. Bock came from a military family and served as a junior officer in WW1. He was a monarchist and spent weekends between the war at Kaiser Bills estate in Holland.

During WW2 Bock took command of Army Group North for the Polish invasion and command of Army Group B during the invasion of France. For the invasion of Russia, Bock was put in command of Army Group Centre but suffered his first reversal when the advance on Moscow stalled due to the onset of winter and stiffening Soviet resistance. Prior to the arrival of winter Bock had urged Hitler to allow him to continue all the way to Moscow, as he saw it the road was wide open. He was overruled and with the Moscow offensive failing was moved to Army Group South.
In July 1942 Hitler removed Bock from his command on the grounds of ill health (a popular euphemism for services no longer required as seen earlier in this newsletter).
He was never to command a front line position again.

In May 1945 Bock was travelling with his family to Hamburg when an RAF Spitfire strafed his car and killed everybody on board.

Limited to 100 pieces worldwide and priced at $45/£40 per figure.

SS097: Erwin von Witzleben was a German field marshal and Knights Cross recipient. Prior to WW2 Witzleben has been involved in two plots to remove Hitler but both had fallen through and had not progressed to a meaningful stage. I think its fair to say Witzleben was not Hitler's biggest fan!

Once WW2 commenced Witzleben found favour with Hitler after some brilliant tactical maneuvering, which saw several French divisions surrender to his forces in the 1941 invasion of France. However he was forcibly retired in 1942 for criticizing the invasion of Russia which he deemed a tactical error, the official reason however was given as ill health. By 1944 he was heavily involved with the July 20th plotters and had been slotted to take command of the entire German army had the coup succeeded. God really loves a trier and this guy was not going to give up!

As we now know the plot failed and Witzleben was arrested and found guilty, he was slowly hanged by the use of piano wire suspended from a meat hook. I suppose it could have been worse, he could have been hung by Sgt John Woods!

There is also a B version of Witzleben with rectangular base so he can fit in with you Berlin 38 collectors. The serial number for this figure is BER025.

Witzleben is priced at $45/£40 and is limited to 100 pieces, he makes quite an impressive set standing there in his full German officer regalia.

SS095; Two new members of the Hitlerjugend stand in front of a senior SS officer who holds his sword for them to pledge their allegiance to Der Fuhrer and Nazi Germany until death us do part. Which will certainly be quite soon the way the war is progressing for the Allies!

The A version comes with our figures standing on a natural free form base.

The B version has our figures on a rectangle style grey base for those of you who want to place these figures with your Berlin 38 sets.

Limited to 50 sets of each version and priced at $120/£110 for the 3 figures.

SS094; Alfred Jodl was a German Generaloberst and Knights Cross recipient who served as the Chief of the Operations Staff of the Armed Forces High Command (Oberkommando der Wehrmacht) throughout WW2.
Jodl signed the Commissar Order of 6 June 1941 (in which Soviet political commissars were to be shot, before war had even begun with the Russians, now that is some serious forward planning!) and the Commando Order of 28 October 1942 (in which Allied commandos, including properly uniformed soldiers as well as combatants wearing civilian clothes, such as Maquis and Partisans, were to be executed immediately without trial if captured behind German lines). This was a bad move for Jodl as this one came back to bite him hard at the end of the war.
Jodl spent most of the war at the Wolfs Lair in East Prussia and signed the instrument of surrender on behalf of Donitz on 7th May 1945.

Arrested after the war Jodl was found guilty of war crimes and was also unfortunate enough to be executed by Sgt John Woods.

In 1953 Jodl was found not guilty on some of the charges he had been executed for (some of them had been made up by the Allied prosecution, hard to believe I know), but the USA overturned this decision later the same year. I think we can say Jodl was a badass Nazi but not as big a badass as Keitel and definitely not as bad as Hitler. However as a Knights Cross recipient he still gets a place reserved for him at our round table.

A seated Jodl taking notes is priced at $45/£40 per figure and is limited to 100 pieces worldwide.

SS093; Wilhelm Keitel was a German field marshal during WW2 and Knights Cross recipient. He served as Chief of the Armed Forces High Command in Nazi Germany during WW2. Keitel was well known and reviled as Hitler's dependable and habitual "yes-man" among his military colleagues. In the course of the war, he signed a number of criminal orders and directives that led to a war of unprecedented brutality and criminality against military and civilian combatants. He was definitely what you would call a badass Nazi.
After the war Keitel was arrested by the Allies and found guilty of some very serious war crimes.

Keitel was executed in 1946 by Sgt John Woods a complete amateur who had bluffed his way into the position of hangman for the US armed forces. Woods executed ten Nazis after the Nuremburg trials, all of them violently banged their heads as they fell through the small trapdoor, with the fall being insufficient to break their necks, in Keitel's case it took 24 minutes for him to die a slow death by strangulation. One might argue that woods just hated Nazis and his methods were a macabre way of proving this. However he had also executed over thirty G.I's prior to Nuremburg, eleven of them also being bungled in the same manner. So maybe he just hated people who happened to be at the end of his rope or was naturally incompetent at his job? I guess we will never know.

After the war Woods took up the position of electrician in the US army (hangmen positions were obviously in short supply) and accidentally electrocuted himself to death in 1950 on the Marshall Islands.
I think we can safely vote Woods into history as the worlds worst executioner and also the worlds worst electrician!

Keitel in happier days with table and chair is priced at $45/£40 and is limited to 100 pieces worldwide.
The map is only shown for illustration purposes and is not included.
Feel free to add a pot of tea or coffee mug from our accessory sets to complete the setting. An SS waiter set is also due out soon, the possibilities really start to unfold now!

SS092; Maximilian von Weichs was a German field marshal during WW2 and Knights Cross recipient. He commanded his own Corps during the invasion of Poland and was given command of the 2nd Army for the invasion of Russia. He commanded them at the battles of Smolensk and Kiev and then went south with General von Paulus to Stalingrad. It was here that Weichs Army Group B was cut in half by the Russian counter-attack 'Operation Uranus'. Weichs advocated a tactical retreat, this did not go down well with old man Hitler who relieved him of this command and posted him to the Balkans, after promoting him to field marshal. Something of a relief I imagine after the hardship of the Russian front!
It was here that Weichs was responsible for curtailing Partisan activity by any means deemed necessary including the taking of hostages.

Retired by Hitler in March 1945, Weichs was arrested after the war by the Americans and was supposed to stand trial for war crimes against the Balkan partisans. He was lucky enough to have all charges dropped due to illness and died in retirement in 1954.

Please note the sample we were sent of Weichs has black glasses as per the photos, the final production pieces will have Weichs wearing silver glasses which look more authentic.
Weichsl seated with his field marshal baton and a cuppa' is limited to 100 in number and priced at $45/£40.

The Knight's of the Round Table

091.jpg

As we are introducing a round table as an accessory set this month (ACC PACK 038), we thought it only fitting we made some Knights Cross Winners to sit around it. Please read below for the first release of our Knights Cross recipients designed to fit around our table or as stand alone pieces. As you can see from the photos, the soldiers and accessories really come alive when placed together.

GW097; Another four man set, this time our WW1 Russians are stood to attention awaiting inspection by their commanding officer. I must say these guys look really smart on parade like this!
Also available as a single CLUB figure, see details at bottom of this newsletter.

Limited to 25 sets worldwide and priced at $160/£147, once again great value and only here whilst stocks last!

WW2 The Far East

RS061; General Kuribayashi was the garrison commander of the Japanese forces at Iwo Jima. The USMC expected to capture Iwo Jima within 5 days, it actually took 36 days thanks to the inspired leadership and defensive planning of Kuribayashi.

In June 1944 Kuribayashi took physical command of Iwo Jima, a vital stepping stone for the US forces in the conquest of Japan. He undertook the building of a series of bunkers and tunnels that his men could shelter within and also bombard the American forces from. However even at this stage 6 month before the Americans landed, the Japanese were running low on rations and by the end of 1944 were forced to eating seaweed, with fresh water only obtained by what they could save from rainfall.

When the Americans landed in February 1945 there were no defending forces to meet the Americans, they simply waded ashore much to their surprise. It was only later that Kuribayashi ordered his troops to start mortaring and firing at the American forces on the beaches. Banzai charges by the Japanese were forbidden by Kuribayashi. This surprised the attacking American General Holland Smith, who had expected the Japanese defenders to throw their lives away in this manner.

Moving inland, slowly but surely the Americans pried the Japanese out of their defensive positions, using flamethrowers and phosphorous gas to remove them from their underground chambers. The Americans were stunned to find surviving Japanese soldiers some weighing only 70 pounds after months of water and food deprivation, yet still the Japanese kept fighting on.

By 16th March the American forces had reported the whole of the island was in their possession, except for a fortified gorge where Kuribayashi was holding out with 400 of his men. Determined to fight to the death, the body of Kuribayashi was never recovered. It is believed that he died during an early morning assault on American positions, but speculation still surrounds the manner of his death to this day.

For America Iwo Jima was a costly battle with 26,000 casualties, the Japanese lost 21,000 men with another 1000 surrendering or being captured.
The last two Japanese soldiers on Iwo Jima surrendered in 1949, although I do wonder what they actually did for 4 years after the war ended?!

Our rendition of Kuribayashi has him decked out in his full imperial uniform with Katana as he would have appeared prior to the final battle.
Comes as a limited edition of 100 pieces and is priced at $42.50/£39.

Really nice sets, like the German officers but they are not in my sphere of collecting, but the quality is outstanding, the dio stuff is nice but not of interest, the Russians are a great addition.

Not a lot for me, but I will need to buy a few more WW2 SS Germans from last month to catch up. Plus have added a new tent party [multiples of what I have already] to my 9th century this month. Could do with some Roman equipment carrying mules for my tent parties.

AVAILABLE NEXT MONTH ACC PACK 037; A WW2 bunker with a difference, this one designed to be viewed from the rear but can also be used in a conventional diorama and displayed from the front if required.
Comes with some great little details like detachable roof, light switch, fitted fire extinguisher, wall poster and even roof lights!

Is the bunker based on a real German version?
