Quite clearly Australia!

3rd on the medal table after US and China. However if based on population then Oz way on top.

Think we also have the youngest gold medal winner at 14 for skateboarding.

Any highlights for people. Hopefully Oz beating US in women's basketball and France beating the Le Bron all ⭐ team.

Filipino gymnast Carlos Yulo

He will reportedly receive 10 million pesos (£136,591) from the Philippine government, as well as a further 6 million pesos (£81,955) in cash incentives from the House of Representatives.

But in addition to the cash, he has also been shown support by local businesses. Yulo has been gifted a three-bedroom property in Taguig City, plus a lifetime supply of ramen, mac and cheese, and colonoscopies.

Yulo's prizes are rather extravagant compared to that received by Australian athletes.

Stars who win gold receive $20,000, silver medallists are rewarded with $15,000 while those who clinch bronze win $10,000 under the Australia Olympic Committee's medal incentive fund.

Athletes who receive multiple golds will still only receive $20,000 in total.

"As reported in the Mail on Line"

Funny you should mention Yulo. My wife is from the Phillipines. We were in a shopping centre the other day when she popped into a shop whilst I sat down in front of a large TV screen showing the Olympics. Literally as she came out it was Yulo to perform so we watched until the end.

Good to see him getting some rewards back home.

I suspect most Australian gold medalists will do quite well from sponsorships and endorsements etc.

Yeah; neither of those comments aged very well.

Highlights for me were the games in general, always a treat to watch mostly amateur athletes competing for their country, I think the professionals quite enjoyed it as well.

Also seeing the US demolish the field in womens Gymnastics, mens and womens Track and Field, womens Soccer and mens and womens Basketball. Well, the women haven't won it yet, so we'll see.

Rather enjoyed hearing our national anthem played 39 times (so far), always chokes me up.

I know it annoyed one female athlete "hearing that stupid song" or words to that effect and "US womens swimmers ringing a cowbell and chanting USA! USA! USA!" before an event.

Yeah; national pride, knock it off Americans.

Stay classy there girlie.

It’s always fun to watch sports you don’t know a lot about or don’t watch too much between Olympics. I loved the Track and Field and the joy of some of the competitors. One athlete who impressed me was Sifan Hassan of the Netherlands who won bronze in the 5,000 and 10,000 and gold in the Women’s Marathon today, despite being bumped not far from the finish line by one of the other runners.

More a reflection on my feelings about Le Bron which are nothing to do with his basketball skills.
Good news was USA beat China overall but it was close.
Australia came 4th which is good for a small population. However I did note our ANZAC mates in New Zealand did pretty well and came 11th with 10 golds for population just over 5m.
Whilst there were a few negatives I think overall the games went well. A real Hollywood ending which was appropriate.
The break dance lady has got massive publicity in Oz and current Daily Mail Oz has several articles from different angles. I would say it has become almost political with those on the left saying she gave it a go whilst those on the right saying she can't be the best and deprived somebody better of a chance. Either way I think the emphasis on her has taken away from the great achievements of many others.
Next Olympics is LA and then Brisbane. Brisbane planning not going well so far and the politicians can't make up mind which venues to use for the big events. The initial idea was to keep costs low and use mainly existing venues but with upgrades. Now people are talking about new multi billion $ stadiums. A no win whichever way they go.

I can only imagine what the olympics in LA will be like; the word ****show comes to mind.

After it's over, any new facilities they build can be used to house all the homeless illegals that have flooded that state/our country the past 3.5 years.

Some of the facilities that were built were in areas like St. Denis, which is a poorer area. These facilities will now be used for these people, which is the way it should be.

The 1984 games were fantastic. The last great Olympics in my opinion. I started at USC the year before those games. They rebuilt the campus that year. I can only imagine, however, what the current California politicians will do with the 2028 games. There won't be a homeless person to be seen, however. They will suddenly disappear like they did when the Chinese president came to SF.

Peacock did a fantastic job with the Olympics. You could stream all the events and pick what events you wanted to watch. I was mostly interested in the track and field and each night I was able to watch what happened during the day and if I didn’t want to watch a particular event I could fast forward but for the most part I watched it all. This is a far cry from the way it was ten, 20 or 30 years ago.

That "performance" was beyond embarrassing; guaranteed she'll make a **** ton of money off of this.

Who on the AU Olympic committee actually thought sending her to represent AU as a breakdancer was a good idea?

Leave it to the left to defend her/defend the decision to send her.

Imagine if that happened in any other sport/event and someone as horrible as that represented their country while depriving someone else to go who actually had talent?

Going to the Olympics is a dream for a lot of amateur athletes; a pipe dream for 99.999% of them.

Call me behind the times or whatever but I don’t see how break dancing is an Olympic sport. I realize that skill is involved and so on. I also don’t see how that rhythmic swimming (or whatever it’s now called) is an Olympic sport either.

I know I sound like an old fuddy duddy. No need to remind me!

Going off topic a bit, but regarding the Australian breakdancer (or B-Girl to use the correct terminology!), there’s a clip of her Olympic routine set to the music of Mr G’s expressive dance on Summer Heights High on YouTube.
If you haven’t seen Summer Heights High it’s a mockumentary about an Australian high school in the style of The Office and the only Australian comedy I can think of (apart from Paul Hogan in the 80s) that has aired in the UK.
Well worth a watch if you like your comedy a bit cringey and the actor/creator Chris Lilley is a genius.

I don't get it either, nor do I get rhythmic swimming.

Maybe they are trying to appeal to a younger audience, that along with skateboarding, although I have to admit snowboarding is pretty cool.

Talk about being an old fuddy duddy; I wasn't aware that breakdancing was even still a thing, it's something myself and my friends used to do about 40 years ago when it was hugely popular in the club circuit.

A vision of you break dancing is a scary thought.

When I was in my 20's, I had more moves than Ex-Lax.....................;)................hey, don't knock it, was part of a group called "The floor lords", one of the kids was an extra in "The Last of the Mohicans" a number of years later, he played one of the indians who got shot towards the end of the movie/during the cliff scene, we were all wondering why he got that foolish mohawk hair cut.

This was way before I started throwing weights around, I weighted a buck 50 or so.

I'm 63 now and could have put on a better show than that nitwit did right before I blew out a hip, that was beyond embarrassing, but like I said, watch all the money and status she gets from that nonsense.

Can we get a video. Even at 63 I’d pay to watch that.

George- don't give up your Olympic dreams just yet. Rather than break dancing, though, try out for the US women's boxing team next time and clobber some of those women in the ring. I tried to explain to a friend of mine that break dancing is now an Olympic sport. He couldn't believe it. Yet another in my growing list of reasons to never watch another Olympics. Not to beat a dead horse, but I'm sure that the reasons for adding this involve some type of misguided effort to avoid offending anyone by laughing at the idea.

I didn't see Raygun's Breakdance performance, or any other Olympic Games as I didn't bother getting online access.

Out of curiosity I just checked her out on Wikipedia that included the following:

At the 2024 Summer Olympics, Gunn did not receive any points from the judges and was knocked out at the round-robin stage. After her performance was ridiculed on social media, she shared a quote on Instagram: "don't be afraid to be different, go out there and represent yourself, you never know where that's gonna take you". She also stated that she could not compete athletically with her younger rivals, explaining in an interview afterwards:

I was never going to beat these girls on what they do best, the dynamic and the power moves, so I wanted to move differently, be artistic and creative... I was always the underdog and wanted to make my mark in a different way.
In response to the mockery, Team Australia Chef de Mission Anna Meares issued a statement in support of Gunn, condemning what Meares called "trolls and keyboard warriors". Head Olympic breaking judge Martin Gilian, aka MGbility, said that Raygun had done exactly what breaking is supposed to be about: "originality and bringing something new to the table and representing your country or region", which she had done with her kangaroo hop.

My take is, even at the age 36 years, I guess she had to have the record/talent to be there, and I can see her point of view. Obviously the judges didn't agree with her 'interpretation' on the day, but I don't think she deserved the Zero points or the abuse. IMO Breakdancing shouldn't be in the Olympics and doubt will be at LA or Brisbane Olympic Games, more apt for Opening or closing Ceremony, where 'different' is 'normal'.

And add ribbon dancing (or whatever it's called) to the list.
