One Set Wonders that we have (1 Viewer)

Hi Guys,

Some very cool sets! I like the Errol John sets a lot as well. They are very difficult to find in the states so good pick up on that one!

Sandor you should have mentioned to me that you were travelling to Germany. I live here and could have put you on a store in Bavaria that you would have really enjoyed! Next time you get over here let me know and I will give you some stores to try and hit.

The flat of Frederick is a very cool one! I have a few flats and will have to dig them out one day. Thanks for sharing it.

Wow, I didn't know you lived here! Also, I am still here (though right now I am in Austria, backstage at a TV show), so if you send my the info about the store, I could possibley fit it in (I still have 2 weeks). I am in Erding near Munich by the way, and right NOW I am in Saltzburg.
(Insert correct spelling of the German word for goodbye),
Sandor

P.S. Might not have a ton of money for soldiers, as I am buy some leiderhosen :)

Hi Sandor,

I totally understand! On the Laderhosen hit up one of the 2nd Hand Stores and get a pair that are used for a lot less! I got mine that way and saved a ton of cash. Salzberg is a great little town! Check out the PM I sent you with places to check out.

Hope you can get to some of them.

All the best

Dave

Sorry that I can't post pictures. No camera, no aptitude.:redface2: -- Al

:)

You gotta get a camera and posting a picture is very very easy to do these days :)

I bet you have a bunch of stuff that folks on here would love to see!

I hope to, one day. Funds too tight to buy a camera. That would mean no TS for a while! {sm2} -- Al

Gentle Friends,

One of the sets I find most interesting is within my collection of "One Set Wonders" is the Sarum Soldiers Set #S6, "Ladies Guest Night." The set is one of the Sarum Soldiers series of the Officer's Mess 1900. The series is composed of seven or eight sets and includes officers shooting billiards, a bar scene, couples dancing, a musical quartet, etc. My "Ladies Guest Night" is the only Sarum Soldiers set of figures I own as these figures are a bit difficult to find in the USA. I hope to add to this series in the future as I find it charming, different, and a fine addition to my diverse collection.

I have posted a few photos of the set below. I hope you enjoy viewing it.

Warmest personal regards,

Pat :smile2:

Really neat set, Pat. Very evocative, I think. Who's got the Port? :wink2: -- Al

Hello Pat,

Thanks very much for posting the shots of this very nice set by Sarum. You are very lucky to have this hard to find set in your collection. The other retired manufacturer who made sets with a similar theme is Caberfeidh of Scotland.

Best Wishes, Raymond:)

My "one off" figure stands below. He's a Britains hollowcast metal figure, in the unusual scale of 65mm. (See maker inside the base). He is, of course, King Henry VIII - and a figure made especially for Madame Tussaudes Waxwork Museum in London - as a souvenir figure. You can see the name of the Museum imressed on the plinth base he stands on.

Apparently, a bit of a rarity - he came in amongst a box of second-hand and broken figures - which worked out at pence for each figure. I don't know all that much about him - or the versions of his many wives - who also featured in the set.

I keep him - as he was head of the armed services - so is a Toy Soldier - albeit - a rather strange one. johnnybach

Well Thats an interesting find especially at a pence!

I dont know a lot about the figures done for Madam Tussaudes but there were a bunch. Also he was a warrior in his own right and is a good one to hang onto for the collection.

Sarum is a very cool pick up Pat. They did mini persian rugs for the scenes as well as acessories like potted plants and a fully stocked bar. Would like to get some to go with my other Christmas sets.

James Opie's little pink book - has him identified as figure number T1 - so presumably his wives carried on the numbering(?) He says he was first made in 1935 - so could be older than me! Opie's price guide was £15 when his book was published in 1983 - so could be anywhere now. He has a little paint wear loss - but is otherwise intact.

He was a mystery for a while - but Scott (Britfarmer) helped me ID him. I did e-mail Madame Tussaude's - but heard nothing in return.

I once was intending to re-paint him - but somehow resisted the urge - as I sensed he might be worth a bit more than 37 pence. (£10 divided by 27). I think its fair to say - - he's grown on me - a bit. jb

They never made the wives for this particular Henry but they made his daughter Queen Elizabeth. This series also included red riding hood, cinderella and HRH the Prince of Wales

Well Scott - never knew they didn't make the wives at that date. A marketing opportunity missed there then!

Wasn't HRH Prince of Wales the really expensive one? Pity it wasn't that one in the box - but mustn't grumble - for that sort of money - I was happy with old Henry!

A true oddity though - and one I am very pleased to own.
