Gents,

It's that reflective time of the year again and I was thinking that I had painted a few figures during this year and decided to count them up. I have finished fifteen figures and one dog, with the possibility of completing two more in progress before the year is out.

The number surprised me, but I should say that looking at the work of other modellers/painters on this site is motivating, as is the advice and help others have given- thank you.

I'm curious to hear how other painters/modellers went throughout the year and roughly how many figures you guys would complete over twelve months (bearing in mind scales and types of figure)?

Scott,

going on the images of figures I have painted, I'd guess about

300

but thats mainly 54mm, and doesn't take into account some 1/35 scale plastics and repaints of 10 K&C vehicles.

To see my past 2 moths work, check it out on my front page here:

I've just returned to painting toy soldier scales after many years of painting 28mm figures for my two sons (and also for my own amusement.)
This year I invested in a few of the Armies In Plastic sets : Boer War British Cavalry, Boer War Gatling Gun, Indian Army Cavalry (generic set) and Prussian Uhlans. I've also recently picked up one of the "Helmet Soldiers" mounted figures along with a few spares as I fancied a bit of kit bashing.
I painted the Boer War chaps pretty much as issued but got creative with the Indian Cavalry (as the yellow jacketed Skinner's Horse) and the Uhlans in a 1900's dark blue uniform (pre-WWi) I also bought the Crimean War 17th Lancers from AIP but painted them as 16th Lancers from around 1860.

So, I guess that makes (er... takes off shoes and socks...) 25 humans, 1 artillery piece and 20 horses.

Blimey Scott - I don't even know how many figures I have ! Every time I start to count 'em - I get fed up - and give up.

I do know I have drawers full of sets and bits and pieces - some half-done - some not started yet.

Lets see - I've finished modelling/converting/painting three Stagecoach personnel, six mounted Buffalo Soldiers, and three Injuns since 27 November - and have three more underway at the moment. I did a Bonnie Prince Charlie for a Xmas present - and have a Medieval Owain Glyndwr conversion underway too. So that's 13 completed and 4 more underway at the moment - in the last 17 days............as for the rest of this year - God knows!

Oh! I painted 68 Gordon Highlanders earlier on this year - and 10 medieval guys (Knights of Agincourt) too. Did a mounties band of 37 pieces - but can't remember when I started/finished them - was it this year or last? Done three pieces of a Chess set...........6 WW1 RFC figures and a bi-plane (unfinished - got bored with it). Did a brewers dray with two figures and two horses - loved that one.........

Sorry Scott - I don't count 'em up like that - just do it for the enjoyment - and I'm too happhazard!

Just call it lots! - and mostly in the Autumn/Winter

Well, all I've managed in over a year is a massive four figures! (shown here) But in my defense they are more of the masters for the Alma range. I seem to be burnt out lately in regards to painting figures but I will be painting the masters for the British Guards Colours/Bearers next year.

Jeff, though the number may be small, the end result is huge. A tip of the cap to you guys who are steady of hand, sharp of sight, and so obviously talented with a paint brush. {bravo}}{bravo}}{bravo}}

I'm not surprised to hear Obee and Johnny Bach finishing a few figures over the year. 300 is a lot of painting though!

Welcome to the forum David. It sounds like you paint at a similar pace. Any chance of seeing your Skinner's Horse figures?

Jeff those Alma figures look great. When you paint a master figure are they pre-production figures for shows and determining colours to be used later in production?

Thanks for the welcome Scott.

Here's a snap of the Bengal Lancers. Bear in mind that they do need a little finishing off, but you get the picture...

AIPSKINNERS.jpg

AIP figures remind me a little of the style of the traditional lead soldiers, hence the glossy looks.

Welcome, David, and nice job on your Skinners Horse! Do you have any shots yet of your Uhlans? Imperial German is one of my areas of interest.

What sort of paints do you use, and do you prefer one style over another, or is it more or less as the spirit moves you?

Prost!

Hey David - a warm welcome from me too - and now you have your camera working ( you're far better at pics than me) - how about showing us your 16th Lancers too - they're a favourite of mine, you see.

Nice to see that you like the glossy toy soldier style too. Nice job on the Skinners..................johnnybach

I've attached a pic of the Uhlans (or at least I hope I have.) I use a mixture of paints as I have a fairly large collection from other projects. Recently, I've taken to using Vallejo acrylics and then coating with a gloss (polyurethane) varnish. I recently discovered Rustoleum Plastic Primer so I'm in process of repainting my figures so they're chip-proof. I also use enamels by Humbrol and a wide variety of acrylics, even the common or garden craft variety,

As to styles, I wish I had the time and patience to do museum quality work, Style-wise, the AIP figures remind me of the older toy soldiers so they get the glossy treatment. I'll post more pictures to my profile over the next week or so as I'm able, but here's the Uhlans as promised...

Take care
Dave

Thanks for the welcome, Johnnybach.

I find the painting therapeutic as a means to unwind after a busy day. I like reading up about the troopers before I paint them and try to find some kind of accuracy in the uniforms. You'll notice in the pic that the 16th are painted with uncovered Czapkas. The 16th are more often pictured with the white covers, typical of Indian service. I thought of this but I've seen paintings of the 16th in action in India without them. May have been artist's licence but I used the same one to paint my guys.

I may have muddled the picture loading as my original isn't showing the pic like it did for my other reply. Here goes again...16thLancers.jpg

Hi Scott,

Michel (who owns Alma Figures) provides me with the uniform details etc and these figures are actually the painted masters which the factory painters copy for the production figures.

Jeff

My estimate is about 200 painted, mostly Alamo.
Recently, I returned to the Pacific.
Some new conversions of Marines and Japanese
to replace those sold at West Coaster.
I have also acquired and painted a few Formtech
Terrain pieces.

The next step is obtain a Chi Ha tank.
Probably Tamiya will do well.
It will become a roadside ruin
for a diorama.

Thanks for the welcome, Johnnybach.

You might want to paint the large brass plate on the front of the lance cap.

I finally got around to making my interchangable horses, and some mounted infantry officers. The photos are rubbish though!
