Painters/modellers- how did you go in 2011? (3 Viewers)

You might want to paint the large brass plate on the front of the lance cap.

Sources vary as to whether lancers would wear a full set of parade ground accoutrements into battle. I painted these as a variably generic group to cover the late 19th century era. I did start to wonder about the cap badge but was swayed by the fact that AIP only provides galloping horses, (hence -the "charge".) In reality, the czapka would probably be flapping behind the trooper's back at this stage, held on by the safety cord.

I'm painting these AIP figures with a view to having a go at the HG Wells "Little Wars" games. As such, they'll probably be due a repaint at some time. I'll bear your suggestion in mind

David - If you like the 16th Lancers - why not add a Colonel to supervise your lads. You can get a re-cast of this old Britains figure from Dorset Soldiers for around a tenner (metal though). He's just about my favourite figure - ever, and was lovely to paint. If you fancy him - have a go!............johnnybach

Nice painting! And such a great pose. It's a shame that there are very few manufacturers, certainly in plastic, that provide a standing horse. Given that cavalry spent a great deal of time in scouting and generally trotting about, I've always thought it was something missing. I might just splash out in the new year and go for this figure, although I know that I have several of the AIP sets coming my way that will need to be painted, plus a conversion of one of the Helmet Soldiers.

Don't know about plastic, but in metal check out ATS, Yeomanry and Asset for standing horses, you will find an extensive collection of styles and periods available in kit form at reasonable prices. Trooper

I'm looking forward to some downtime between Christmas and New Year's, and plan to finish a bunch of toy soldiers that are all around 90% finished, heavy on the SYW Austrians. So, I should have a better total by the 31st than I do now

Thanks, Scott, you can count on it! I'll add a new thread and a gallery for the Army of Maria Theresa. It's a similar mix of figures to my Prussian collection--Staddens, Rose, the odd German maker or two. Some are finished, but I want to show them all at once.

OK, I've had a chance to take some photos of the latest figures I finished, and here's what I did in 2011:

First, a pair which you may remember, "Adam and Eva", castings by Rylit:

Next, a Brunswick hussar from the western theater of the Seven Year's War, casting by Stadden:

then, from the Austrian army, a hussar from the Regiment of Baranyay, casting by Rylit (what a great pose!):

Here's an Imrie-Risley British light dragoon casting, which I use for the 15th Light Dragoons, serving in western Germany in the Seven Years War:

I have a couple more troopers from the 15th, including a hornist whose uniform I have to repaint, because I've gotten much better sources since I originally painted him, and his uniform is all wrong.

And finally, another Stadden Prussian hussar casting, which I painted as a hussar from Kleist's "Green Hussar" Regiment (a nod to Jeff):

I apologize for the poor quality of that shot. I'll take a better one to post to my gallery and my thread on Frederick the Great's army.

I have around 10 or 12 more figures on the bench, some more Rylits, some Staddens, Austrians and Prussians, nearly complete, but I wasn't able to get them done by the end of the year. But once I finish them, I'll create galleries for the Army of Maria Theresa, the Army of King George, and one for Frederick's allies.

With the faces/hands how are you getting that pinky finish? It does suit these figures.

I finished the two figures I was working on before the new year. Just taking a break from painting for a while to find some more figures I really want to paint.

Have also been drawn into a couple of threads on this forum with buildings guys have built from scratch from basic materials. Wouldn't mind having a go!

Well, all I've managed in over a year is a massive four figures! (shown here) But in my defense they are more of the masters for the Alma range. I seem to be burnt out lately in regards to painting figures but I will be painting the masters for the British Guards Colours/Bearers next year.

Thanks very much for the kind words, Scott! To your question, I use 1116 Cream from Testor's gloss enamels for Caucasian skin color for all my glossy toy soldiers. I also use it for light buff for facings, or the doeskin breeches of the Prussian cuirassiers and hussars.

The Rylit figures have a wonderful animation to them, in their poses, and I have a couple more nearly finished, including some more Austrian troops. I hope to finish more this weekend.

Very nice work Brad, the Austrian Hussar seems to be my favorite too. Although it's difficult to ignore the lovely pair (if you'll pardon the expression) in the first photo ..... at least the young gentleman is doing his very best to maintain eye-to-eye contact!
