Painting gloss figures (1 Viewer)

I think that most of the Gatlings were finished in grey from what I have found out, but not sure about the crews. I've seen photos of Naval and Artillery crews but not Infantry ones. There is info showing Black Watch maning a Maxim gun and these are in red tunics.

Not much help I know, but I will look harder.

Jeff

That's a lot of help, thanks Jeff. Grey it is then. If there's info showing crew in red tunics, then that's close enough for me. :)

Thanks again, I'll keep you posted.

For what it is worth, Trophy had a Zulu war gatling with troops in red tunics...Michael

Thought this my be of some help Simon the Service helments can be in white on stained tan. Although this is the Britains set Trophy did feature them wearing red tunics and sold set with either the white or tan helmet...The Lt.

Thanks Joe. The 'tea-stained' look is the way to go. White helmets are just too 1860's. :)

Simon,

Gatling or no Gatling, that is the question? Have you started painting yet? No elephant jokes here! :D

Jeff

Yes!
Just started.
Photos to follow later on this evening, once I've got the sprogs to bed.
You're right - there should be no elephant jokes here.
I'm planning to paint the gun grey in the main.

Speaking of grey, does anyone know why an elephant has grey skin?

:p

To keep their insides in.

And because Noddy wouldn't pay the ransom :p

And those are some of my best ones. The elephant jokes go down hill from here......

Anyhoo, here's my sorry little band of 24th having had their arms attached by surgeon Wraith. Used standard superglue, as I've run out of gel.

Had one of those interesting superglue moments were nothing seemed to be coming out when I squeezed the tube, so as per standard male practice, I squeezed harder and you'll never guess what happened. It was like a KV coffee mug scenario . Still trying to scrape it off my hands now....

Cleaned up stray flash (not much needed on the Steadfast castings and almost nothing on the Britains) and filled in a couple of joints with Squadron green putty (you could get addicted to the fumes coming off that stuff) and sprayed the lot with several coats of grey auto primer:

Apologies by the way for the somewhat yellow nature of a few of these photos, I seem to end up doing most of this sort of stuff at stupid o' clock at night, using artificial lighting.

I've since done a bit of research on the Gatlings to try and establish correct colours / finishes etc.
1st pic - nice sketch of the piece
2nd pic - Britains set showing gold barrels
3rd pic - showing blued / bronze type barrels
4th pic - with.....err....em....who the heck cares what coloured barrels

I've decided I like research and promise to do more of it. :)

Simon,

These are looking good, having a coat of undercoat really brings out the detail on figures.

How come that RPW are selling castings of out of production Britains?

Jeff

There are some winning combinations out there aren't there ;).

Re the Britains castings, RP used to cast some of the Britains sets, and they still had a few squirreled away. Bless 'em.

Simon

Well, in total disregard for the historical evidence to the contrary, I've decided on gold/ brass barrels, light gunmetal for the rest of the gun and grey and black for the carriage. In the main, cause it looks nice. :)

Started off with the barrels. The gun was pre-assembled when bought, but the barrels rotate, which makes life a little easier for painting 'em up. I've painted these first, so I can get gold paint in all the fiddly bits, but I may have to touch up later after painting the other gun parts:

I've started on the crew and the Steadfast infantry as well.
Humbrol don't do a gloss 'flesh' out of the tin, so I've mixed white, red and pale yellow in the following measurements:
White: Lots
Red: Little bit
Pale yellow: Some.
That said, I've given it two coats and there's still some traces of undercoat showing through, so a third coat will be on the cards, probably a little darker tone.

I'd forgotten how slooooow painting is with enamels

More to come once it's dried out.

Jeff, how's Nelly coming on?
