Painting gloss figures (1 Viewer)

Thanks Jeff, yes there is far more detail on it than the website photos show. Give Nelly a coat or The Lt. will send a band of half painted Zulus round to prompt you. :D

I've given the crew and infantry a second layer on their trousers and got the grey on the gun.

I mixed light grey and dark grey (humbrol 40 and 5) and ended up with dark grey. So I added some more light grey and ended up with dark grey, but not as dark as the first grey. I then transferred the paint from a palate to a saucepan, cause it was starting to build up in quantity, added white, mixed it, added a bit more white and eventually ended up with the light to medium grey I was looking for. I'm now selling the surplus mixed paint to the Royal Navy - should just about be enough to repaint their fleet.

HAHAHA I can just see it now, a river of medium grey gloss flowing down the workbench as you dash for a pot to scrap it into.

A well not to worry as the cannon looks great so I guess it was worth it :)

Simon,

That is looking a bit good now :) I still haven't started painting yet :eek:

Cheers chaps. I've got to try and catch up with the crew and infantry, so a splash of red is required, and maybe just a dash of black on the gun.

Jeff, if it helps, I've got a couple of gallons of spare, ready mixed elephant coloured paint, that the RN have not needed. ;)

Yes sir! Sorry sir, won't happen again sir! Beggin yer parden sir, but why are you slapping me with a wet fish sir?

Been busy (ish) with red stuff. The gun crew have ended up with three coats of Humbrol gloss red. Bit of a pain, but there was still a little of the grey primer / undercoat showing through. The red was also showing up quite dark, so the more paint on, the lighter it got.

This took a little time, as I was trying to avoid sploshing too much red paint on the belts etc, as I don't want to end up with a pinkish hue to them. Also going to have to just touch up a couple of the flesh areas, due to painting and drinking wine at the same time. Seemed like a good idea at the time, and it started off alright....

I altered my painting slightly for the infantry figures, in so much as I painted / underpainted the first coat in a bright red matt (Games Workshop Blood Red). With this on, the gloss red turned out a bit lighter and more the colour I was looking for.
These have just had one coat of gloss, but will be getting a second this evening for a smoother finish.

The trouble with photographing these, and therefore blowing up the size four fold, is that I can now see little errors which I'll need to rectify

Simon,

I see you have been busy then  Two questions.....first, why has that man got a split base? and second...was it red or white wine?

:D:D

Jeff

Well I for one think you are doing a fantastic job on these.

They look really great

Keep it up Simon

Jeff

It was white wine. I didn't want to risk painting the figures in a nice Shiraz and drinking Humbrol's finest, and that was always a possibility as the evening progressed. The turps was an interesting selection to finish the evening off with though ;)

The base is cast like that, so that the gunner can straddle the carriage.
