Painting gloss figures (1 Viewer)

There are some excellent pieces. I have notice alot of similarities to many Britains pieces. Are they sculptors for Britains or did they buy rights to the moulds ??

Simon it looks like you re going to be busy slinging paint. Were the prices reasonable? I wish someone would sell those over here.

The figures are all £3 as castings, not sure about the mounted. The gun was £28 assembled.

Thats a nice model, and rotating barrels! looking forward to seeing it painted. I take it you are going the Humbrol gloss route?

Yep, Humbrol gloss route it is. I had a mess around with different types of gloss varnish over matt paint, but I preferred the gloss enamel look. And on examining what gloss enamels I already had, I only needed to get another 4 tinlets to have a reasonable spread of colours.
I'll keep you posted as to progress :eek:

Their workshop area is great, but chaotic. I think they're planning a bit of an overhaul once they've moved in to the larger premises.

Welcome Lt. Colonel Simon to the "Land of The Zulus". Seems like you've replaced Lt. Colonel Pulleine in Command of the 1/24th. I'm sure you'll enjoy painting them and the finished results once you've got them done I know I will...The Lt.

Looking forward to seeing the results. I would love to get some of their castings. We shall see what the future holds. ACW is keeping me really busy.:D

Just wondering if you have started painting yet? I'm still waiting for my order from Fusilier Miniatures to arrive, so I thought I would pester you :D

Not yet Jeff. Not likely to get a look in until the weekend / early next week. I have stuck various limbs on figures etc, but need some day light at home to spray some primer all over them.

What do you use as a primer? I tend to buy the large spray cans of Holts grey car primer, gives a good coverage and dries quick as well.

The same Jeff, although I tend to use Halfords, for no good reason other than conveniance. I prefer the grey, and use the grey plastic primer, for plastic figures. Not sure if it makes a huge amount of difference...

There are a couple of occasions where I'll use black - smaller figures e.g. Games Workshop (which I occasionally do for a friend) and in future, I'll do the Spartans in black. The ones I did, were grey to start with, and there were some areas, I just couldn't accurately get to and so you can still see the grey through. Rather it were black.

I tried black years ago when painting 25mm wargames figures, the idea was to paint just upto the edge of the colour and leave a thin black outline for effect, didn't get on with it at all.

I have my brush and paints at the ready but still waiting for the EB castings to turn up.

Well,
I've got as far as cleaning up, sticking on limbs n' stuff, little bit of filling and filing and have some bits primed, so yep started, but nothing pretty yet.

Just a thought, I've seen the Gatling gun crews painted up with the standard red infantry tunics, and this is the way I'd prefer to go, but would these have been operated by infantry or would they solely have been operated by artillery? Photos from the late 1800's seem to be a little thin on the ground :rolleyes:.

I'l have to have a think re the gun itself as well. Most gloss painted gatlings I've seen seem to be sploshed with a generous amount of grey. Just wondered up this was 'The Army Way', or whether some bits were retained in their wood finish....

I think that most of the Gatlings were finished in grey from what I have found out, but not sure about the crews. I've seen photos of Naval and Artillery crews but not Infantry ones. There is info showing Black Watch maning a Maxim gun and these are in red tunics.

Not much help I know, but I will look harder.
