Really glad to see others posting Stalingrad scenes. I'm really enjoying your contributions. A lot of very nice compositions here. Keep up the good work guys. {bravo}}

well I can tell you what I learned when I shot the pics in this thread:

I went into a camera shop in late november with the intention of getting a setup similar to Frank's, but being that I was a newb, the guy talked me out of it. Instead he sent me home with two things:

a) a 40" diffusion panel & stand (came in this kit)
http://fjwestcott.com/product/photo-basics/40-5-in-1-reflector-kit

and

b) a dual 500W Tungsten lamp & stand with umbrella kit similar to this (but a different brand & 500W)
http://fjwestcott.com/product/photo-basics-constant-lighting-kits/2-light-ulite-umbrella-kit

Too much equipment for what was actually needed; in a) all that was necessary was the white diffusion panel & stand, and in b) one lamp with stand. The second lamp & both umbrellas weren't used (but they came in a kit & he told me they might be handy later). So if you want to bargain shop, a good light setup could be had for <$150, as I've seen those lamps sold singly for $50, without umbrella. So figure something like $50 each for lamp, diffuser, diffuser stand.

The pics in my thread were shot in a dark room at night (so no secondary light came through the windows) with the white balance on the camera set to Tungsten. The lighting for each pic was one lamp shot through the diffuser aimed at the diorama. No other light was on in the room.

Frank feel free to comment as you are the master & I am grasshopper.

The white balance looks pretty good to me. Your results look quite similar to the results I get using the indirect lighting method, pointing my light/s at the ceiling and using the reflected light. which of course is simply a different way to diffuse the light and to change the direction it somes from. This type of lighting is far less harsh, doesn't wash out colors and lowers overall contrast. I quite like it for certain scenes, pre sunrise, post sunset, overcast. At the opposite end of the spectrum you can use the light directly which creates more of a bright sunshine scene with high contrast and stark shadows. Quite often I will use my second light as a "fill light" to bring out some of the details in the shadows. When using direct lighting I find the best results are achieved using by lighting from an oblique angle from either the left or right side (often dependent on the background). This creates depth in the scene through shading. Some cool results can also be achieved by back lighting to a certain extent. It's all about experimenting.
