Piper Bill Millin has passed away (1 Viewer)

I have just seen this on the news and was saddened by his death. A true hero and, his actions just add to that momentous day. Truly amazing.

Yo Trooper, God Bless him we owe them so much. Just heard another even worse. A 90 year old WW11 veteran died after being attacked violently in his flat a while back and left lying on the floor. Makes you wonder what sort of scum bags there are around to attack a 90 year old, and all they robbed from his flat was £40.00.
Bernard.

Every bit a hero. While I know that there will be at least one piper present to pipe him over to the other side, I trust that "The Flowers O' th' Forest" will be among the tunes that will be played. Thanks for posting the news item.

Years ago, when I lived in Buffalo, NY, an elderly WWI vet was strangled to death in his flat by some punk looking for drug money. I believe what makes news like this worse than usual is that these vets went through Hell & back, only to die at the hands of street toughs in search of "easy" money. Awful!

his mates around him where shot to pieces the germans refused to shoot him thinking that he was mad,, thats how he survided the d day landings fantastic story come on britains or k and c make a figure to commerate this hero :eek::eek:

DD052 Piper has died

For those of you who have set DD052, the Lord Lovat Command Group set, you may like to know that the Scottish bagpiper who played as Allied forces stormed ashore in German-occupied France in 1944 has died at the age of 88.

Bill Millin, personal piper of Lord Lovat, was with British commandos as they landed on Sword Beach on D-Day.

Mr Millin began playing Hieland Laddie immediately upon jumping into the water, as soldiers fell around him, and continued amid the incoming gunfire.

He continued to belt out tunes throughout the landing, marching up and down the shoreline.

German prisoners later said they had not shot at him because they believed he was mad.

Speaking in 1995, Mr Millin said he was sure not how he managed to march up and down the shore.

"Those days, when you're very young, you do some very foolish things," he said.

"If I had to do it now, I'd think twice. But that was my job as piper and working at the front didn't make any difference at the time."

Mr Millin was also part of the group that captured the French port city of Ouistreham and travelled with Lord Lovat to Benouville, playing the bagpipes as the troops advanced.

Mr Millin came under sniper fire twice in Benouville, but on both occasions he played the soldiers off despite the danger.

His action was depicted in the 1962 film, The Longest Day.

Re: DD052 Piper has died

He must have been a lot younger on 6. June 1944 than he's portrated in the movie. But here's a toast to him, because it took a good deal of cold blood, or a good sense of duty--and style--, or both, to play his part, too.

It's sad to hear but at least he had a comfortable death. Unlike Geof Bacon, the WW2 veteran who was one of Eisenhower's drivers has died this week after being mugged and left for dead in his own home. All for £40 and his bus pass! I hope there is a hell so that the scum sucking b@@@@@d that did this will burn for eternity.

Well said, another violent ignorant thug that needs flogging, I hope they do the b*****d for murder and not manslaughter.

Bill Millin’s Passing

Hi Guys,

Very sad to hear of Bill’s passing… He had a stroke some seven years ago and had spent most of the time since then in a nursing home in Devon.

In 1962 when Darryl F. Zanuck filmed “The Longest Day” in France for some reason he chose the Queen Mother’s official piper, Pipe Major Leslie de Laspee to play Bill’s part. Bill was actually younger then (just 40) than the Pipe Major!

Over the years Bill returned many times to Normandy and France and had lots of friends in that country. He also became almost a “member of the family” of the folks who owned the small café next to the bridge.

Although K&C has produced several different pipers… I would like to do one more—specially for Bill!

A great Scot… a fine Piper and… a good man.

Condolences to his son,
Sincerely,
Andy C.

Andy...

Rob and I discussed this very sad news yesterday on the discussion part. An amazing man. Hope you produce a memorial figure to this brave man.

I would send the scumbags out and make them clear mines and IED's for our troops and if they die they die. Absolute scumbgas with no part to play in society. And thats the abridged version!!!!

I wish! You know there'll be a queue of "profesional" all wanting public funds to defend them.

Martin

Hopefully, only at the legal aid rate and not private fee's
Mitch

Yes and there will no doubt be the ' I was hooked on drugs so you can't blame me ' defence. Total bull*** in my view. Praying on a an elderly man who did this country great service is an absolute sickening act, I wish like in the US life means life over here too, he took that old gentlemans life for forty quid, he should now spend the rest of his behind bars thinking about that elderly man and the price he will now pay for that forty quid.

Rob

Why the hell do you always hear about "human right" and never a thing about human resposibilities!
