Could it be the one that was featured in issue #21 of K&C's "Collector" (I mistakenly referred to it as Dispatches in my earlier post) Brett?

Jules,
Yes that was the one.

Shipping is the major issue with items like this.

Looking at your pics from Vietnam reminded me I have had people come around the shop with a photo album of such things looking to take orders. Pricing was good but where do I display such a large ship ? That large one would not fit in any cabinet I have.

I did the wooden airplanes and ships (incl. 5 ft Titanic) from the Phillipines in my early days and wood was an issue with Customs although not the main reason I gave up. I dealt with three sources of wood items and if wood not treated properly (by drying) then might get cracking much later on. No idea about the wood used in Vietnam but certainly a known issue with cheaper wood items from the Phillipines.

Regards
Brett

Yes, I couldn't think of anything worse than arriving home with a nice model ship only to have customs trash it at the airport. It would make you cry.
Wayne.

Those Customs guys again (not only in Australia), I'm sure they have broken thousands of models over the years {eek3}

Once again apologies for the quality of the photos, taken with my ipod. First of all, let me say that the quality of many of these models is much better than the imported junk that I've found back home. Maybe not museum grade but still sufficiently detailed to make me stop and spend a lot of time looking. Now do you really want to know the price? OK, sit down

This large sailing ship at the front of the shop... $190... that's right one hundred and ninety bucks!!!!

I was actually interested in this incomplete Vietnamese Junk as it was about right, scale wise for my SOHK figures. And I liked that it had not yet been varnished. Whilst most of the western sailing ships are quite detailed and don't have layers of lacquer on them, for some reason all the Chinese and Viet Junks are heavily varnished and look cheap and nasty IMO. Also scale seemed to be a problem until I saw this one, which was only partially assembled, but with sufficient detail that it could come up really well. It measures 100cm long and approx 90cm high. The sails fold down for shipping/packaging and it weighs 5kg approx. OPENING price (before the negotiations could commence) was $50... Fifty bucks. I didn't begin to negotiate on a price because unfortunately I had not planned on finding anything like this and my travel arrangements are going to make it near impossible to carry or get it back into Oz. But I'm due back here in January so I'll be factoring a boat purchase into my plans for sure.

After all, these prices are absolutely unbelievable... and to think that I was seriously considering investing in the Figarti HMS Victory last year... which still would have cost more than double my expenses for this past week in Vietnam (including airfares) and buying that large ship. Unfortunately, for K&C, now that I have seen what is available and at what cost, I'm no longer that fussed about the Pirate Junk. I'd still like to see what Andy had in mind as no doubt it would be excellent and of course these models are for the ships only, not custom made with figures, but I've been waiting for so long without so much as a sneak peak as to what was in the offing that I started to look at building my own boat to suit the limitations of my display area and now I've found this. That's not to say I wouldn't be buying the K&C boat if it was to be released, but the options available to me have just opened up considerably, so the K&C boat would have to be absolutely amazing and priced to sell... which I think may be too big an ask.

And yes, these guys do aircraft as well, although I'm not sure how accurately they can reproduce specific types. They looked a bit amateurish to me. I think that you'd need to provide quite specific plans and dimensions. Price for the aircraft that they had which are approx 1/30 scale is $20.

Great post. Now, on the airplane thing and I am not trying to detract from anyone's game. The Philippines has always been the go to place for wooden model airplanes. They are constructed of kiln dried Philippine mahogany. Most of them are built from a buyers custom order. This allows you the luxury of picking number designations etc which is particularly nice if you want the one you flew back in the day or your father did etc.

There are three great Philippine makers that sell on Ebay. 1. MYASIANART. 2. EMODELAIRPLANES 3. PLANESHOWCASE. They are listed in order of feedback rating. They all build to suit and have about a 60 day to you time frame. I do not know if they are detailed enough or can be made to every desitred scale. But I bet they could.

Here are a couple of pictures

I know because I had a few made over the years. About 100 Dollars American made and shipped a piece. I flew both of these planes pictured back in the 70's, now you understand the want and the why.

Take a look at MYASIANART. They have some nice WW2 British. I saw a Spitfire and Lancaster.

We could organize a group trip and party in Manila. {sm4}

1/30 scale plane made out of wood $20 knicker...........................{eek3}{eek3}
To be honest, I think Ludwig is right. Vietnam may be the place for ships, but the aircraft that I saw weren't up to scratch IMO. Maybe they haven't had the demand yet, I dunno

Another possible option for my Pirate Junk. Cost was $30 but I didn't like the high gloss varnish finish

Gee Jules, have you left that shop since you have been in Vietnam??:rolleyes2:^&grin Thanks for the pic and i reckon i would be spending a lot of quality time in that shop if i was there.

Haggle. I am sure you could get it reduced to $29 without the gloss finish^&grin.

I see a USS E something hidden on upper right shelf.

I think Andy needs to buy this shop {sm4}

Brett

This would be great to put HK and IC soldiers on!!!

But no to the buy out. Let us leave the prices where they are.

Did anybody else notice this little bad-boy in the pix that Brett took during his visit to the K&C shop. A delightful little Junk IMO... and matches what I had in mind (size wise) for my display.

I wonder if Andy has given any more thought to releasing some Chinese Pirates or Triad Gangsters regardless of whether he goes ahead with the boat? Otherwise all the USN and USMC figures can shoot at are civilians ...women and children. :(
