I've managed to identify all the remaining figures for this scene bar one tiny figure partially hidden.
All the limbs have been added and the figures are all animated. I am now doing sculpting and then adding the necessary details to the figures.
I have gathered them into groups based on their placements in the painting. Notice the disparity in sizes. Again, there is definitely a lack of any sculpting prowess in these WIPs....:}
definitely on a roll so far. I’ve knocked up all the figures incl the last fig and am now starting to detail them. This includes all the earlier figs where I am adding short hackles to their Belgic shakes.
Rgds Victor.
That vitrine flat is by Glorious Empires. Thx for posting that. It differs in detail from the ptg but it caused me to take another look at some of the details. For eg, sgt legros dying at the gate is not hold an axe but a musket? The ptg is not clear on this. One of the bare headed Br soldiers pushing back against the gate has his shako cradled in his left arm. And so on. I’ll post the pics later.
Dead Fr has more details added. Refining the sculpt. Dying Br soldier has backpack details. Trousers are being sculpted.
These three figs are to the left of the ptg. Br soldier climbing ladder in the bkgd. Another soldier in the process of turning away. Another soldier with his musket at the gate.
Two running figures to the right of the ptg.
Figures at the wall. All sculpted to a smaller scale. The black figure is being converted from a verlinden tank commander.
Some fig being given a matt primer spray to reveal imperfections.
All figures now given a matt primer. I am getting a good handle on sculpting the belgic shako and its overall dimensions. Hackles have been added to the shakos. The overalls are also being made tighter.
The three figures at the wall. The kneeling figure will have his left leg redone. The middle figure will have his shako and head reduced in size.
Legs have been added to the dying Br fig.
The climbing soldier. His left leg has to be redone.
Now starting to rework the earlier figures. One of the figures pushing against the gate has his shako cradled in his left arm. So I sculpted a shako and will fit it later to the figure.
Cleaning up the shako on a dead soldier. Also improved on the right leg. The burly sergeant pushing against the door is being improved.
The soldier with a musket needs to have his stance improved. I've carved down his face considerably. His shako has also been trimmed.
The sergeant behind the officer. His overalls have been trimmed down. He has been given a moustache as per the ptg. I also reduced the height of his shako.
A fig behind the group pushing back the gate.
Improvements being made to the 3 figs on the wall.
Refined these two Br soldiers. Left arm and legs reduced in height and improved stance. Shako added to the bracing soldier. His stance has also been improved.
Sculpted epaulettes and added a cartridge box to the dead Fr soldier. Eventually, I removed his backpack and added a rectangular pack to the figure as per the ptg. Buttons have been added.
I am definitely being kept bemused... Also got to keep resculpting and adjusting the figures as well..
Finally starting to testfit the staging. This should be the fun part, I think. I've already prepped the background ready for painting.
I worked out where all the figures should be and drilled holes into the base to locate their positions. I used some cardboard pieces to work out the dimensions of the walls and gates.
Also decided to slant the base to create the necessary perspectives. Then the scene was placed within the box.
The proposed mat cutout was placed to frame the scene. I then elevated the scene to fit within the frame. I adjusted the heights of the gates now made from basswood. Further adjustments were made to some of the figure locations.
The figures were then worked on further. Starting with the foreground officer and kneeling Br soldier, I changed their poses to try to interact them more tightly and press against the gate.
Thank you for your most generous and gracious comments. I must admit having a certain confidence to do justice to this piece but there are still issues which vex me. Due to the need for visual perspectives, I had varied the heights of the figures based on the ptg. However, a 3 D layout footprint is now causing me to resize some of the figures. Constant adjustments of the figures lead to unavoidable breakages of fragile ends and there are only so many muskets and bayonets in my hoard. So I have resorted to stretching heated plastic sprue to make more bayonets.
I ptd the base and the gates in oils. While waiting for them to dry, I carefully positioned the Br figs against the gate which was propped up with one of the Fr soldiers. These four figures seem to be about right and when the oils are dry, I will fix their positions as well as the gate.
Its been a very pleasant weekend celebrating Xmas. Im still in a holiday mood as I have taken most of the week bet Xmas and New Year off. In the meantime, Ive developed the work habits of Santa's elves, still beavering away during the hols...
Here's plenty of WIP updates.
I changed the pose of one of the Br soldier with the shako in his arm pushing back against the gate. He is now really pushing. The sergeant has been given an ear and a chin strap.
The three running figures are being resized. The front one has been completed.
I painted the base dark brown and gave it a glossy varnish to simulate the wet ground. Then I fixed the two gates after adjusting their heights. Some figures have already been fixed in position. The others have been placed for testing their positions.
I also altered the position of the Br soldiers on the other gate. A musket was added to the burly ensign. As it was a Fr musket, I added a bit of sprue to make it look more like a Brown Bess. The Historex cart was fixed in position as well. The groundwork was redone to blend in the dead Fr fig in front.
The Fr figs at the gates helped to fix the final placement of the gates. As the gate opening allows an unexpected view to the bkgd, I will have to add legs to the dead soldier at the gate.
Also more figures in the bkgd to create a crowd scene including a flag bearer and flag.
