I was having some work done today in the house when one of the workers was checking out my LAH collection when he asked " Is the insurance for something like this expensive?" well I couldn't answer him cause I never even thought about insurance. But it has me thinking if any of you with large collections have insurance for the collection and if so where did you get it covered. I would think most house hold insurance would cover some but am not sure if there is a special collectable insurance rate etc? Just a thought

John..

I looked at some of the special insuarance for collections and found that it was expensive and, not very good. I spoke with my building society and, explained what I had and wanted covered. The chap came out to the house and did an assessment. I now am covered nicely within my house contents and, the policy did not go up as much as these ''specialists'' would have charged and, I know should anything happen that my bank will pay out on a claim. I have heard some stories from UK guys where issues were not covered by strange clauses

Do your homework and you will get a good cover. It really is worth it

My home owners insurance has a special section that allows you to cover nonstandard items. It is for jewelry and artwork, so I added my hobby stuff to it. Not too bad of a cost in rates. I actually need to increase the value.

My collection is covered by my home owner insurance policy. I just raised the value of the house contents with X €'s and I pay a normal annual fee based on the total content of my house incl the collection.

Regular homeowners or renters insurance will not cover something special like a TS collection on a replacement value basis. In most cases a special rider has to be written/added to the existing policy with as much info as possible such as number, individual values, photos, a list of items, and a professional estimate of value. Insurance companies won't take your word that your collection existed without these. -- Al

Hello John Mackay:

My Insurance agent advised me to just increase the amount of "Personal Property" coverage to allow for the collectible items costs which I have done. It is wise to check this out with your insurance agent. You must also try to at least estimate the cost of your collection. I have always kept all my toy soldier receipts over the years.

John, One thing that I do is If there will be an outsider coming inside to do any kind of work I drape sheets over my curio cabinets to keep these items out of view.
The less the number of strangers that sees the collection the better. Desperate people do desperate things !

Yeah that I understand, I just had never thought about insurance and I have never sat down and really added up the value of the Collections but when you think about it it soon mounts up.
