I'm very happy that you were able to collect the whole line. It might just be me and that's fine but I'd much rather have 30 beautiful figures from a release of 32 figures then wait and miss them all. Its not ideal but as you've shown it can be done, and I'm sure your very happy with the end result.

It would be much easier hunting for the missing 2 figures then waiting and having to hunt them all down at a later date.

It's a hobby and meant to be fun, and there is no right or wrong way to go about building your collection, its an individual choice. I'm just trying to help fellow collectors with knowledge I've gained from being a First Legion collector since the Bavarians.

This same topic has been brought up many many times over the years and it always ends the same way, the standard bearers always sellout first. By em early boys or be left wanting, thats just how it is. Hear me now and believe me later :wink2:

Gebs.....This has been your ongoing mantra for years.:rolleyes2:......Now My Opinion and mantra for the Ump-teenth time:rolleyes2:..... The trouble with your advise and strategy is that people who basically have no real interest in the series in question will rush to purchase flagbearers ONLY out of fear that they may miss out if they decide to collect the rest series latter.....Still some will also purchase multiples and hold them for for resale at 3-4X original retail knowing that there will be a created or iminent shortage........This leaves the rest of the figures in the series NOT COLLECTABLE and STAGNANT....Few will want to RISK collecting a NAP series without a flagbearer thus the remainder of the series line STAYS STAGNANT and so the remainder of the figures does not sell out.....This is a decision that only FL can make in regards to flagbearers.....If there are many remaing figures minus the flagbearer in an FL NAP series it would be smart to provide a secomd flagbearer in order to sell (i.e. MOVE THE REST OF THE FIGURES)....Alternative #1)The second run of flagbearers would obviously be FEWER IN NUMBER in a ratio to match the remainder of the series....or #2 Alternative (better) have a Flickstarter program that requires at least a 50% non refundable deposit for a re release perhaps at a slightly higher cost then the original price.....Think about it? Your suggestion only instigates the shortage problem further.... Keep in mind I am addressing a specific situation where FL has many remaining NAP figures that have NOT SOLD OUT due to flagbearers missing from the line up..,....OK...Your turn again to rebuke my suggestion yet again for the 100th time.....Finally it's up to FL to decide what works

That's who my advice is directed towards, and if I can help one collector its worth it to me.

I don't make First Legions company policy, but I have learned how best to deal with it. Again, I'm just trying to help other collectors avoid this situation as best I can.

Really?? you are trying to help collectors???? I don't think so ....Again your advise only aggrevates and perpetuates the existing shortage problem, maybe that is your objective.......I am suggesting a correction or "possible reasonable solution" to the problem and if FL can make it work it's a good thing.... but you are ALWAYS opposed to an alternative solution.... I wonder why??.:rolleyes2:....... Anyway my suggestion is made and it's up to FL to adjust or not as they see fit......It's there call.... But I ceratinly would NOT ADVISE collectors to purchase figures from an FL NAP series if a flagbearer is not provided "when needed" in the series or try to create an urgency to panic buy flagbearers as you are doing

In ranges that I collect or that interest me, based on prior experience, the first pieces I usually purchase are the flag bearer and the drummer. I believe Gebhard has given good advice. If, over time, I decide to not collect the range, I can always resell the figures.

Seriously, there is not a rush of people buying these flagbearers to speculate on them, there just isn't. They sell out first b/c of what Brad and Gebs have said. Also, when a new range comes out, people naturally go to the Flag, then the drummer, then the officer, usually, it is just human nature as they are usually the "wow" figures of the series.

Since I sell and I have no problem saying that, it is not a dirty word nor is Ebay, my strategy is NOT to rush out and hoard new releases, you go broke that way. First, I don't have a crystal ball to say, wow that is going to be a sure fire great one, nor do I have endless hobby funds to hoard away items for a rainy day. I do buy collections (usually with the purpose of getting a few pieces I want, then reselling the rest to pay for the purchase) and I do go to shows looking for bargains and I shop on ebay. In all of these cases, there is a WILLING BUYER and a WILLING SELLER. There is no rip off either way. For example, I was at the NJ show last year and a gentleman had a Metal Shed Rail Gun for sale at $2200. I was not a willing buyer at that price, but he in no way was ripping me off, it was his asking price, it is a free market.

I know you have and always have had an issue with the secondary market, but it works both ways, there are a lot of items available to a wide audience, and pricing is always in flux, kind of makes it fun and it is a hobby. It is supposed to be fun.

Do these rules only apply to toy soldiers?
Say an artist creates a limited edition print and you pass on it. He then makes three more in the series that you like and buy. Now you want the first one. Should he also make more?

Additionally, do I have to sell my house for what I paid? Can other items appreciate in value based on demand or is all tangible property to be sold at the price paid by the original purchaser?

Just tying to show the flaws in your reasoning. Why should toy soldiers and first legion specifically not fall under market practices?

I think this thread has reached its natural conclusion. By now, we all now how everyone feels about the issues or questions raised by it. I doubt that there is anymore that could be said that hasn't been said already.

If he had started at this price (instead of $600), I would have bought it. I ended up buying a custom-painted version of the kit which to my eye is indistinguishable from the rest of the set.

There are several reasons why flag bearers and drummers can become high priced. But no one has mentioned the situation of the vendor who started collecting several regiments of NAPs cherry picking the 6-10 figures he liked most from each regiment. Of course the flag bearer, drummer and sapper were "automatic selections" When it was decided to sell off some of the NAP sets there was very little market for most of the figures, some of which were still available from FL. Selling the "good" figures is easy, but that leaves several figures from each regiment for which there is little demand and makes for a sad grouping. I sold the "good" figures to Treefrog members at "fair" prices. I know the prices were fair because in every instance, I asked the buyer what price he thought was fair. The fair prices were all above the original price. So unless you are prepared to talk about the shortfalls in value and difficulty selling some figures I don't think you have much right in complaining about resales above original list price.

I see your point Terry, maybe the easy answer is to offer the whole lot. And let it be known that the centetpuece is the Standard Bearer.. It might just be good enough for someone to bite...

The problem with this approach is basically you don't attract buyers who are missing only one of the pieces which limits your buying audience. Grouping is good for new collectors who start from scratch but normally rare pieces are likely to be bought by collectors who missed the mark on a specific piece. Then it's up to them to decide on how much they are willing to pay for that missing piece. For that one I still think it hasn't reached the sweet spot of attractive price point especially if you add shipping to it which is not free...

It's just a thought... With me my "want to have" as I mentioned would be the Gordon Highlanders. Except for a couple of pieces. If the Standard Bearers are offered, and are in like new condition. I would think real hard if i's offered... Maybe I will bite maybe not...
 
Thanks for the info. If there was any Standard Bearers offered. I would have jumped on it. Its beginning to be my holy grail found if I get it.
