What a marvellous thread full of differing opinions from all over the globe! All I'll add is that we British cohabitating on our small sceptered isle are a nation steeped in history and tradition. Wherever you go from the highlands of Scotland to the fishing ports and old tins mines of Kernow, Welsh Wales or Dagenham docks there is invariably a story to be told. The Royal Family are a contributing factor to the rich fabric of this nation, to really understand it you've got to understand the British way of life, our mentality and values.

We Brits are quite a tolerant lot so from staunch republicans to ardent royalists we all have our views and let everyone get on with it. It is by no means the most perfect nation on the planet but at the moment I can think of many worse places. We are also quite a mixed bunch too and maybe a little bit keen on a punch-up from Saturday night pub tear-ups to major global conflicts, but I'll bet if you're stuck in a trench with it all going off around you'd like one of us standing shoulder-to-shoulder with you.

So, IMHO its not about the monarchy its about being British and what that means that is important.

Happy 4th July!

Just think for a minute if things had turned out different, this might have been a review of the troops!

Agree with some of this- we are a nation steeped in history and tradition that is no doubt linked with a thousand years of monarchy-with a slight break in the middle of being almost a republic. And to be perfectly honest a large majority of those monarchs are not worth more than a few lines in the back of a history book. 350 years on from the Norman invasion in 1066 and not a single English monarch could still speak or write English-parlez Francais s'il vous plait- and that great monarch of ours beloved by Hollywood- Richard the Lionheart- only spent eleven months out of his whole reign on this sceptered isle describing it as "a wretched place".

But tourists from all over the world still invade this rain swept island of ours to soak up not just the rain but our history and visits to the royal palaces/abodes are always top of their priority list. However, unknown to them our very British history (which I am very proud of) has been under perilous threat for the last 20 years or so. Courtesy of our government, human rights and multiculture activists and my real favorite the revisionists. So much so that history has disappeared from our childrens school curriculum apart from a few brief paragraphs-this was reflected in a recent survey conducted on 200 college undergraduates age 16-20 years old- they were asked a series of questions such as the three I have listed below- the percentage rating were the correct answers given.

Who was on the English throne at the time of the Spanish Armada-22%

Who was the commander of the British forces at the Battle of Waterloo-13%

Name one 19th century British Prime Minister-11%

Now some of you might say-so what? but these youngsters are probably some of our future leaders and captains of industry who really haven't a clue where the Brits have come from and how our history constitutes our mentality and our values. How on earth can a country go forward when our future generations have no idea how we got here?

But no doubt they know of Queen Elizabeth (well I hope they do) and how the monarchy especially since Victoria (they might not have heard of her) has played a large part in the British psyche and has helped in retaining what we Brits still believe Britain to be-just don't count on our history pointing the way as others are determined to sabotage that part and unfortunately the're winning.

That is truly sad if you can't get those questions right. I'm sure, however, that American children wouldn't know the answers for similar questions.

I'm not sure that's correct-when I have visited that great country of yours the young kids of my many American friends have always impressed the hell out of me with their knowledge of the US.

And I always get goose-bumps when I look around the crowds with their hands on their hearts as your national anthem is played or old glory is raised or lowered.

Our Union Jack flag you will find printed on carrier bags, ladies knickers, swimming shorts and worse-and most of the kids who carry or wear it as such couldn't even tell you what it's made up of.

BOB, two great posts. Agree with you, including that we can admire the strength of US patriotism.

I have to be honest; I can only name two British PMs myself and I did attend British schools when I was younger. The only one I'm completely sure about is Disraeli. I think Palmerston was but not 100 percent sure although I do know that he was PM. Now, if anybody doesn't know the answer to the other two and they don't have to be British, that is truly sad.
