Hi All,

A stimulating exchange of uniform details with Alan "Trooper" on this website led me to amass sufficient details to begin sculpting a kettledrummer of the QOOH yeomanry. For some reason, this figure does not photograph well at all (I like to blame the tools, you understand...)

A bit different and looking good so far. Old Trooper is a wealth of information when it comes to uniforms. What colour will the uniform be when it's finished?

Looking forward to the next progress report.

Jeff

I thought you might find these photos of Basil (Balisarius) useful reference for the saddle

Hello Jeff and Martin,

I am sculpting the Queen's Own Oxfordshire Hussars Yeomanry kettledrummer circa 1904. For refs, I have the series of books by Barlow and Smith on Yeomanry (Ogilvy Trust) missing only vol 1. Also a few articles by Bob Marrion in Mil Modell.mag.

The reason for choosing this figure is that the kettledrummer is quite portly (you won't get that in a regular regt!) and would be fun to model.

Colour will be dk blue with mantua red collars cuffs and stripes.

Thanks for the terrific picture of the kettledrummer saddle. Very useful for me esp to model the kettle drumpad. I only have the Historex kit to go by.

My other refs suggest that the Universal pattern Saddle UP (MkIII) 1890 saddle. The spoon and white metal on the cantle can be seen in my photo. I have started converting the Historex Scots Grey saddle to this. The UP has a lower cantle and I will need to add the spoon to it.

I attach some ref pics for your enjoyment and further inputs.

Thanks and rgds, Victor

I think I have volume one if you need anything. I must admit, if I had the time I'd like to work on some Yeomanry figures. Your right about the bandsmen, they all seem so young and slim, or am I just getting old and fat!

Hello Martin,
You and me both! The bandsmen are definitely getting younger, going by that lovely little girl on Spartacus.

Hi All,

Worked further on this figure. I have made him more portly. He wears the 50 round bandolier (still being sculpted). I would be grateful for any pics of Queen Adelaide cypher for ref to be painted on the collar.

Great progress, Vic! You've certainly captured his shape very well. He's taking on a definite character. I'm excited to see more of your progress pics!

Prosit!

Hi Victor

Enjoying this thread, your figure is coming on very very nicely, looking forward to seeing the finished product. Are you going to produce it as a casting?

John

Hi All,

glad you all like yeomanry figures. Alan, thanks for the Adelaide cypher. The horse I an modelling is a grey, real dobbin-like face with all white coat - I'll have to modify the Historex horse. John, not producing this figure as a casting for now.

I finished sculpting the 50 round bandolier and everything else and am just cleaning up the figure and now starting to work on the saddle and kettledrums. I have given the figure a light wash of basic colour to highlight any defects as well as to work out the tonality of the colours.

Hi Victor,

I am looking forward to more pictures of your progress with the figure.

Keep up the great work.

Raymond.:)

Hi Raymund and all,

thanks for the encouragement. I have cleaned up the figure and have added stirrups. I am now focusing on the horse, completely resculpted the head and neck and am now doing the mane. Also detailing the saddle. I will post further pics later.

Rgds Victor

Hi All,

Some more pics:

The figure has been base painted in blue and mantua red. I have started to work on the face in oils.
The horse head has been resculpted to represent a larger head as in my reference pic. Also note that the saddle panels have been reworked to fit nicely under the legs.

Hi All,

Painted the figure in more accurate shades. Actually, more like tinting the colours using thin washes. Note the detail on the bandolier. Will gradually highlight the details after I finish the horse and saddle.

I shortened further the horse's neck by about 5 mm and resculpted. Spent some time reshaping the saddle to fit onto the horse. I won't be adding a crupper to this piece. I'll try to add more details to the saddle. All grey sprayed to reveal imperfections.
