Jeff,

Of course he'll be carrying those 2 kettledrums as well...:)
I sanded the sideboards further to lower the saddle a bit. I'll add more detail to the horse, including a tail! I'll also make him out to be a stallion.

Better make him a gelding, Victor, stallions were too disruptive on parade especially if there were any mares in season.

Geldings still had a good go.:DCouldn't help but feel sorry for the sometimes.:D

I found more detailed photos of the attachments for the crouper and martingale.

Hi Alan and Martin,

Thanks for that. I looked thru the Web for castrati and came across unmentionable pics. I finally figured out that both descended testicles had to be completely removed. If not, the gelding would still be frisky. The operation will be carried out on my horse...:)

Thanks for great pics, esp of the crupper (crouper?) and the back ring on the saddle to which it attached. OK, I'll model the crupper on my piece as well.
I didn't realise that the kettle drum pads were so short, when compared to the Historex pieces.

Rgds Victor

Crouper I believe is the correct spelling, unlike most of my spelling.:) And I think you'd have problems understanding my pronuciation.:D

Martin.

Hi Martin,

I've been trying to sculpt some decent horse tails. Will update further when done.

Hi All,

Modest progress. Finally sculpted a tail, added fetlocks and started base painting in white. My plan is to paint horse first, then add the saddle furniture. Also darkened further the tunic for the bandsman. The saddle really needs some work.

Wow! - Victor - because I don't do this sort of thing myself, I don't normally look here! I've also had my head up my jumper for the last few months with other things - and almost missed the fabulous development of a real character piece here.

He's just marvelous. What a lovely bit of work you are producing. Well done indeed. I will keep looking at how he finally turns out for sure.

I see you're getting some good advice here too - I know some of "the usual suspects" too. johnnybach.^&grin

Hi JohnnyBach,

thanks for yr comments. I had a bit of bother with the saddle sometime back - the saddle flaps kept breaking as they were quite thin when I was modelling them off the horse. I have recently reshaped the flaps. So with a bit of luck will be able to move this project on.

You've done a nice job on the saddle but why off the horse?

Martin

Hello Martin,

Well, with my fumbling hands, after shaping the flaps on the horse, I remove the saddle to align the two sides and sometimes, they shatter.

I was re-analysing the UP saddle flaps and all the reference pics seem to suggest a flap that was aligned slightly more forward than what I have represented here, so more work ahead. I want to do a decent saddle.

I intend to fit the underlying girth and crouper straps to the horse first before finalising the fit of the saddle.

Very detailed sculpting! I just love this character, and the painting (plus that awsome scultpting) real has some CHARACTER! You realy have every detail down! Can't wait to see the final- maybe you should cast some duplicates of the horse, and make a whole band!
Nulli secundus,
Sandor

Dear Martin,

You know I will.

Dear Sandor,

Thanks for yr very kind comments> Actually I didn't feel as if I had done justice to the saddlery hence I am resculpting it in more detail. I will update my progress.

Hi All,

After some critical re-look at the whole piece, I decided to change mount to fit the picture ref I was using.
I added putty to sections of the Historex horse, including building up the rump and back to accomodate the saddle.
The saddle was itself was broken into 3 parts - saddle tree and 2 flaps. After proper alignment, the saddle was fitted to the horse and the flaps added.
The kettledrum pads were added and kettledrum castings made from resin were test fitted. I am trying to add more detail to the saddlery as these are visible.

I won't now be adding the crupper as this was not usually fitted (according to M Chappell). I have no further details on the breast straps or kettledrums except what Martin kindly provided. In the absence of further info, I'll use guesstimates.
