Questions and Answers from the HK Event Part I (1 Viewer)

Thanks so much for posting the answers to these questions. While I'm disappointed that there isn't anything in the pipeline for the Peninsualr War series, I'm looking forward to future additions to the War of 1812 series.

Yeah I'm really disappointed that the Peninsular War series wasn't popular enough (low sales figures) for John to add to the series.
After all it is a business and if a series isn't making enough money it's pointless adding to it.

I personally believe it's one of the best series he has made. Shame he couldn't have added a few wounded, some British soldiers and a couple of civilians.

Oh well I will just have to enjoy what I already have from the series. I haven't got all the Portuguese soldiers yet so maybe I'll add a few of those and then call it a day.

Paul

I am also disappointed that his Napoleonics didn't sell enough to continue the series.
The French figures in particular were suitable for other campaigns pre-Bardin uniforms so
we could stray from Waterloo. I know he did some sculpts of the French in action poses which
would have sufficed to fight off the Spanish Guerrillas, Portuguese and British before ending the series.
Anyway I will keep lobbying for some limited releases in the future.

I found the passage below to be the most enlightening, as it suggests so much about the TS-business:

[....]This brings up an interesting point. This year I have tried to help dealers at shows by offering previews of new prototypes. Obviously,
this has been to try and encourage attendance at shows, but also several collectors requested previews or some idea of what was
planned in the future.

Making the prototypes and producing the items, are two different processes. The production process is largely out of my control, and
there are many things which can go wrong. For example, the factory which was scheduled to produce the artillery sets closed down, and it
took me 6 months just to get back the masters. This is why this set as well as several others have been delayed.

In the past there have been problems with deliveries going missing, held up by customs, masters disappearing in factories… not to mention
production issues. I have always tried in the past to only make new release announcements when I actually have the items in my Hong Kong
workshop

I ask that collectors please be patient, regarding releases. I will review the show situation at the end of this year, but at this time,
I cannot see that I can continue to preview as many new items in the future, it’s way too much extra work and pressure.

I knew and understood a little of what's described above, so I wasn't surprised by the details.

While I am not a Peninsular War collector, I did get a few to use as "Pirates" for a battle of New Orleans.
PSG-01 thru PSG-04. Not perfect, but they do look enough like pirates to fit.

Maybe John would consider a Battle of N.O extension to the series?

Really happy to hear that there is still life in the War of 1812.

I can understand why Americans would like to see a New Orleans dimension, but personally, I'd much rather see the earlier battles of the war fought on the Niagara frontier covered.

Oops. Too many pints in the night. Here are other QandA

Q. Will you be expanding the BH deck scene like rockets on racks, trolleys, more deck equipment and more figures?

A. The BH deck scenes will be expanded on. There should be an interesting piece previewed at next months’ Chicago Treasure Hunt!

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Q. Any interest from JJD for an "American Volunteer Group" range?

A. This is an interesting suggestion, and one which has been on my list to develop in the future. Unfortunately, at this time there is a two-year backlog in the development of new aircraft models, so it would be a while.

Q. Are there any plans for a pilot and/or observer for the Walfisch model?

A. Yes, definitely. The hold up at the moment is how to develop the figure firing the rear machine gun. Should he be firing up or down? Any preferences would be appreciated.

Q. Other than German tank crew figures in the WW2 range, will you be complementing your tanks with other WW2 figures? Will you be releasing any Polish soldiers and horsemen since you have already released the Panzer I’s with early war markings?

A. I am still trying to find my feet with the WW2 series, so am still open to suggestions. I asked a customer last week, which part of WW2 he would like to see me develop, and his reply was “all of it”…….

At this time am just concentrating on tank crews.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Q. Has John ever done a unique, one-off model for a customer? In asking, I'm really focused on existing "kit," a type of aircraft that JJ has already developed and sold, but one with a different livery. Let me acknowledge, also, that everyone reading this is an adult...and we understand that such an example would be fairly pricey.

A. I have made a few one-off re-paints for certain collectors in the past, but it is not something I have the time for, and it is usually for exceptional reasons.

I have considered it as a service which could be developed in the future, but as you say it would be fairly pricey.

I find the comments referring to WW2 very interesting. I know John is receiving a lot of suggestions on what to produce for WW2, armor, aircraft, figures, etc., yet John has said on numerous occasions that the subject is so vast that it is intimidating. John has also proved, time and again, that he prefers the path less taken. I would expect that his WW2 projects will be the more unusual subjects and not the everyday mobs of figures and vehicles that have been done and redone by so many other manufacturers. The AVG suggestion is the kind of thing that might appeal to him. Whatever he decides on, it will have to be of interest to him. The response John received, 'All of it', is exactly the problem that John is dealing with. A vast subject which John can devote only a portion of his time and effort to developing and producing. As with collecting all of his lines, patience will be a virtue when it comes to WW2. Such patience will be rewarded in the long run. -- Al

Yes, it was a bit surprising that John indicated that WWII was the most difficult to research given the large variety of sources. I would have guessed something more ancient like the Aztecs. Maybe that is more a function of collector expectations. There are a lot of experts on WWII but not so many on other eras. As a result, the expectations for historical accuracy are higher. The Wildcat gives me a hankering for a Wake Island set. The most neglected WWII campaign is the Sino-Japanese conflict. A lot of great possibilities there that have never been covered.

Agree. Wake Island Wildcats would be great, with figures like Hank Elrod of VMF-211, KIA on Wake and winner of the MoH. The Sino-Japanese war is ripe for a range of vehicles, aircraft, and figures. I believe Figarti touched on it years ago with some Chinese Army figures, as they did with Wake to a more developed degree, but both are subjects that could do with the JJD touch and development. There is even room to move into the Nomonhan Incident of 1939, which has many interesting vehicles and aircraft from the Russian and Japanese belligerents. The WW2 era is just so vast, with so many different areas of interest. Like Napoleonics, it is a black hole for collectors. -- Al

This is very exciting for me. Really looking forward to seeing the preview piece at the Chicago show . . . Looks like I will be participating once again in John's Treasure Hunt . . . .

Thank you Moe and Vicknor for posting this. Really appreciated!

Re:

"Q. Would a 1066 range (Vikings, Anglo-Saxons and Normans) be something, you would consider doing?

A. There is a Dark Age series in development, and will be part of the upcoming JJD 2nd ANNUAL ASIA EVENT, INTERNATIONAL OPEN QUIZ
TONIGHT!!!!!"

Is there any news on this?

Pete, sorry, but I don't recall that.

In the way of previews, there was a video clip associated with the WotR artillery piece. Here's a screenshot of the set:

WotR Arty.jpg

I'd post a link to the actual video, but it would just take you back to Facebook.

Thanks Moe.

Pete

Pete, there was a prize that was awarded. It was a certain "bezerker" figure that some say bears a resemblance to Mike Miller.;) I believe that it was mentioned that it was essentially the first in a new range. Seeing as how its a figure of a Viking, perhaps that was what the answer above was alluding to.

Will post several screen captures of the preview pieces below. The quality is quite poor, I know. I'm afraid this is as good as it gets from streaming video.

Aztec.jpg

When queried, JJ identified the Aztec figure above as "the yellow one."

BGC Bike an Pilot.jpg

A new BGC set, above, motorcycle and pilot.

GGC Engine and Mech.jpg

Above, a nice GGC set, a mechanic and powerplant.:D I believe that Jenkins identified the engine as "a silver one."

WotR Arty 2.jpg

Second pic of the WotR artillery, this one without the wheels.

I believe that the other preview was the Wildcat model.

Again, sorry about the screen captures. They are what they are.

In the way of conventional digital images, this was posted to the Asia Group FB-page:

Can't recall it being posted here before.
